In a little over a week since iTunes bridged the Atlantic, European consumers have purchased and downloaded more than 800,000 songs from the store.

iTunes Europe is currently available in the United Kingdom, France and Germany with a European Union version on schedule for October. Customers have access to thousands of legal music downloads at a la carte pricing and special previews of upcoming albums.

Since iTunes entered the European market for downloadable music, the service has rocketed to number one on the charts for online music stores in Europe.

"After selling over 800,000 songs during its first week, iTunes is Europe's top online music store," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "In the UK alone, iTunes sold more than 450,000 songs in the last week—16 times as many as OD2, its closest competitor."

Personally, my favorite feature of iTunes is the two free song downloads every week. The songs are pre-picked, but I've been exposed to several very good artists that I have never heard of and, hence, would have never even bothered to check out had it not been for iTunes. Very ingenious, IMO.
