Microsoft Announces Virtual Server 2005 Release Date

Microsoft is inching closer toward the release of Virtual Server 2005. Virtual Server leverages the Windows 2003 Server system as a platform for running multiple instances of alternative operating systems on a single system. The final version of the Server will be made available on September 13 in two varieties: Standard and Enterprise. More information on Virtual Server is available in the BetaNews archives.

One of the best things about it is that you can connect to a VM instance using a remote viewer application with passthrough AD credentials.

This means you can deploy legacy applications that will not run in terminal services through this tool. The only drawback is that you need a dedicated instance of the lagacy app for each user, there is not round-robin type support that will allow the user to take the next available free VM instance. There is an exposed API however, so this functionality may be possible to emulate through a custom modification.
