35 Million Wiis Sold in US By 2012, Says Nintendo
By Ed Oswald | Published May 23, 2007, 12:18 PM
Nintendo said Wednesday that it expects to sell as many as 35 million Wii consoles in the US alone by 2012, which would place it close to the record 38.2 million PlayStation 2 consoles already sold in the market.
Over 2.5 million have already been sold, solidly putting it in second place behind the Xbox 360, which has sold some 5.4 million units since its debut in November 2005. Sony's PlayStation 3 remains in third with 1.3 million consoles sold.
Already the cheapest of the next generation consoles, Nintendo told Bloomberg News that it has no plans to cut the price even further. With demand already extremely heavy, a price cut could further cause supply shortages.
The company also spoke of market conditions, which they argue favor the simplicity of the Wii.
"We're starting to see in the performance of the PS3 and Xbox 360 that that's not necessarily motivating the market the way it used to," Nintendo of America marketing head George Harrison told Bloomberg. "So we're going to start work on future technology only when we believe it's necessary."
14 new games will be released for the console throughout the third quarter, many of which focus on more simple games that take full advantage of the Wii's motion-sensing capabilities.
Right you can talk from here till the moon and back again however it's your personal taste and opinion. The message is about the market out there and see the WII is doing very well. It proofs indeed that just the normal consumers not waiting for fancy bla bla stuff but for a fun to play game console... And see the WII it's exactly doing that! What the heck makes it for sence having fantastic graphics I can't imagine your putting your game on a demo play and just watching your wide screens pixel performance... WII did a good job ;-)

|Good one there, Mr. Sony Cheerleader. You seem quite adept at bashing the Xbox360, but now the Wii too? Sony has been, and will be, unable to capture not only first place, but even second place in the next generation console market. So I have this to say, does the phrase "sour grapes" mean anything to you?
Keep going with your Nintento/Microsoft bashing, it's quite amusing. I hope you realize you're not changing anyone's mind. All you're doing is stirring the proverbial excrement and making yourself look silly in the process.
I'm sure all the Wii owners are happy with their purchases, unlike PS3 owners. Why would anyone need to sell their Wii on Ebay? They could just return it to the place of purchase for a refund. I haven't seen a single returned Wii at any store and most places are still sold out. The same cannot be said about the PS3 of course. Everyone has some in stock, nobody's buying, opened boxes everywhere. Sad really.
The PS3 is a dud. Everyone already knows this. Making disparaging remarks about the competition isn't going to change anything.

When the PS3 first came out, I planned on waiting until GTA4 came out and the price drop after blue ray components dropped in price...
But I played MotorStorm & Fight Night round 3 at Best Buy... and that was the breaking point for me.
I drove home had a few drinks to overcome buyers remorse and then returned back to best buy, including the buddy that drove me there and finally got one.
I've been pretty darn happy with those two games so far. The graphics, physics, and details really add up to some amazing gameplay that renewed my faith in consoles which has dwindled since after the original ps1.
There's also motion sensing technology built into the wireless controllers, so the same wii technology is there and Motorstorm takes advantage of it... But after a while the arms start to get a little tired and shaky, so I switch off and on.
I can't wait until Mythic(MythTV) becomes available. Then it will replace my media pc that I use to watch movies on my HD tv off my file server in the basement.
I have about 300+ movies on my file server, so I can queue up movies without ever having to move a single leg muscle... which is nice. But the surround sound system is da bomb when I queue up a weekend party mix with visualizer.
Here's the hardware comparison for those that care. (I certainly do)
The XBox 360:
CPU: 3 cores running at 3.2 GHz each
GPU: Custom ATI @ 500Mhz
Supported Resolution: Up to 720p | 1080i
System Memory: 512MB
Audio: Surround Sound
The Wii
CPU: IBM Broadway 729MHz?
GPU: ATI Hollywood 243MHz
Supported Resolution: Up to 480p
System Memory: 88MB
Audio: analog stereo and dolby pro logic II
The XBox:
CPU: 733 MHz Intel Custom Pentium III
GPU: 250 MHz Custom-Designed NV2X
Supported Resolution: 480p, 720p, 1080i
System Memory: 64MB
Audio: analog stereo, dolby pro logic II, digital stereo, DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1
The PS3:
CPU: 7 cores (Cell Proc) running at 3.2 GHz each
GPU: Custom Nvidia @ 550Mhz
Supported Resolution: Up to 1080p(zang!)
System Memory: 512MB
Audio: Surround Sound (Digital Optical Audio)
The Wii has a cute form factor with some unique features, but the hardware is 2x game cube but close to equivalent of the original XBox....? hmm...wtf? You're paying $300 for xbox performance with a motion sensor controller?
Anyhow the PS3 has about 2x+ the hardware of the next in line console the 360... and so to me you'd think hmm, twice the hardware twice the cost. Well by that formula it's actually less the twice the cost of a 360. So I knew then that the PS3 and I were destine to be together.
Plus the PS3 will probably be hanging tough for at least 4 years assuming that the xbox 360 doubles it's hardware in 4 years with a new console. In which case the PS3 will prob still womp it, so not much need to spend another $400 in three years.
The PS3 is a hefty roller with its hardware and naturally the kind of cutting edge that sony is pushing comes with a price. Their console technology will last for double the length of time the ps2 hung on for. They can afford to take a loss for a couple years on a console that will technologically last for many years past the competition.
Really brings home some crazy a** honky tonk fun times when you have the PS3 complimented with the HD TV + surround sound.
Once guitar hero comes out... the weekend parties are really going to start blowing womens clothes off(in theory).
Woot!
But that's just my take. I'm not a fan of cutsie rehashes of the same games I played when I was 12... the originals were good... but mario, sup mario world, mario 64, mario sunshine, mario X+1, mario X+2, zzzzZ... common now. Same game, with upped graphics.

|While I agree with you that Mr. Mario is getting rather dated, it's not so much the character as it is the gameplay of most every game that has the Mario character in it. Some of the most fun I've ever had on any console has been some type of Mario-branded game from Nintendo. Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64... hours of endless fun, single- or multi-player.
Most Sony fanboys seem to love to think their console has the ability to open a rift in the space-time continuum with the proper super-secret button press combo. The Wii proves that you don't need a system that's borderline in need of liquid nitrogen cooling to have a great time. Nintendo basically came up with a revolutionary way to control and enjoy yet another slew of fun games. Sure others have tried similar approaches before in the past... but plain and simple, Nintendo is apparently the first to do it right. They're successful once again, and that seems to be pissing quite a few people off.
The Wii is what it is, and doesn't pretend to be something it's not. It's a game console... not a media center, and not a distributed protein folding research platform. I've got all the bad-ass hardware I'll ever need for serious HD graphics, surround sound, and physics simulation... it's called a PC.

Anyone spotted, that in the past much has been made about the PS3's inability to upscale, or it's lack of network media abilities? Funny Betanews have always made a big song and dance about it. However they don't make a song and dance when these things are corrected...
Yesterday an update came out that not only addressed these, they blow these criticisms out the water.
The PS3 is reported by AVS forums to be onpar with $1500 Upscaling Dennon DVD PLayers, and now passes ALL the HQV DVD tests (130/130)..
In addition it does 1080p24, and 720p playback on Blu-Ray for owners of non 1080x TV.
It's currently the best DVD Player, and HiDef player, BAR NONE..

Despite all the moaning, Sony is taking a sizable hit with each console. Seems like there's a good bunch of ppl that are quite bitter about Sony moving so quickly with pushing the technological envelope.
Why is it like ppl feel Sony is holding a gun to ppls head to buy the console? I was merely pointing out the specs, you don't like it don't buy it.
I love the hardware, the games I've bought and rented (6+ so far), and the open architecture that Sony enabled (no modding required to open the system up, linux install ready out of the box stock - day 1).
The multimedia center is one direction that you can take the ps3, it's up to you what you want to do with your system. But for me I love to be able to easily extend out my console exponentially.
Some ppl love the cheaper off the wall wii games like "Cooking Mama": http://www.gamespot.com/...gmamacookoff/index.html
If that's what floats ur boat then by all means, get a wii. lol;)
But for me, I don't really dig the graphics of too many wii games. I've seen flash games with equivalent graphics...:(
And I can't wait for GTA4 in october.:)

|As far as computational power goes...
360 = 1teraflop
PS3 = 2teraflops
But ultimately it's up to developers to tap into this power. The 360 has been around for a year long so naturally you can expect games will be a bit more mature.
A number of the titles for the ps3 are ports of the xbox 360 version, being the 360 came out first. So that is a likely reason for some similarities in gameplay and visuals.
But I'm sure like previous generation consoles xbox + ps2 give developers a year from the release date and you start to see a higher level of performance & quality of games for both consoles.
I think a year from now with the ps3, you start to see developers becoming more familiar with developing for the ps3's architecture and the differences will be far more note worthy.

|Question is, why would I want to pay exorbitant over-inflated prices for Sony's BD offering, when the 360's HD-DVD drive works like a champ on my HTPC (not that it's the only option, either... other HD-DVD drives still cost half as much)? I love how you automatically assume I have a desire to back BluRay. As it stands right now, more of the movies that I personally like exist as HD-DVD exclusives. Sure, there are a few BluRay exclusive titles that I like as well, but not enough to make me want to sell my first-born to Sony to watch. Games have almost infinitely more replay value than movies, and these are first and foremost game consoles.
As has been stated numerous times already, the specs alone do not determine which console is "better". It still comes down to one thing for a game console... the games. The Wii games so far have been extremely fun to play and keep me coming back, and that's what counts.
The price of my main PC is rather inconsequential compared to what I am able to accomplish with it, which is almost exponentially more than what is able to be done on any console. For my money, the PC will always yield more impressive results than any of the current consoles are able to provide... and no, I couldn't care less about how the PS3 can crank out more work units on Folding@Home.

In other words before we see a HD Wii, we might see an improvement to the Wii itself ( external hd support, additional internal flash memory ).
Considering the amount of people with HD equipment will only become larger, the longer they wait the better equipment we will actually see in the end.
