88,400 PS3s Sold in Japan in 2 Days

Supplies of the PlayStation 3 are all but gone after retailers blew through their inventory in under a week, Japanese gaming magazine Enterbrain reported. 88,400 units were sold over the weekend, nearly all of the 100,000 units initially available.
It could be awhile before new consoles make it into the region as Sony prepares for a wider North American launch. There, the company hopes to have as many as 400,000 units available, which will likely sell almost as fast when the PS3 debuts November 17.
Two models of the PS3 are available in Japan. The basic model retails for 49,980 yen ($425 USD), while a more advanced model sells for around 60,000 yen ($510 USD). Both are cheaper than the retail price of the console here in the states, expected to be $499 and $599 USD respectively.
About 62 percent of the consoles sold were the advanced model. No breakdown has been provided of the allotments of each type of console. In any case, the magazine said the launch weekend's results showed promise for Sony.
Best-selling games over the weekend included Ridge Racer 7 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight, which sold about 30,000 consoles each.
Even though Sony is the top-selling game console marker worldwide, that has not stopped pundits from being skeptical. Many have pointed to the PS3's high-price, noting that past consoles in its price range have not been successful.
"At between $500 or $600, the Playstation 3 skews toward the danger zone, and has a price point comparable to the fairly disastrous Sega Saturn of 1995," noted Internet pundit Om Malik observed on Friday. He noted that the PS3 is also $150 to $200 more expensive than the launch price of the PS2 in today's dollars.
"Then again, maybe Playstation has such powerful brand loyalty, millions of gamers will miraculously rise up next week to acclaim the PS3, despite the high cost," he added.
every game on Blue-Ray will cost quite a lot...unlike dvds for Xbox360.
Sony is really going in a big gamble with blu-ray. If PS3 fails than Blu-Ray will. If Blu-Ray fails than PS3 will...preety obvious really. Looking at the prices i would rather spend my money on something cheaper. Plus there are already games for the Xbox however there are only few will be available onto PS3.
Looking at the prices on FROOGLE
Xbox360
-$300 (some shops even nearly $200) If you want hd than around $150.(even cheaper in some places) + Online Service $50.
Even with all extras that it has costs Maximum Around $500. But without HD only $350. So i think this is a fair deal.
PS3
$600 + online fees for some games. Plus costly Blu-Ray discs....expensive...but very powerful(sony said that it is as twice as powerful as Xbox360....maybe..but nearly twice more expensive as well)
Score: 0
PS3 games are the same price as XBox360 games. $40 - $60
$7 if you include downloadable PS3 games...
Score: 0
So...This is My payment...
Xbox360 = $500
xbox online service= $50
xbox online service again= $50
(since it was last year right!)
total = 600 bucks!. now NOV 2006.
HD DVD = $200( optional)
But if I want one, by now the total is $800
So why the talking down on the ps3 cause is 600 look at the sales in japan, sold out!lol. is gonna be the SAme in the U.S
Now My PS3 = $600
and i have Blue-Ray + free online.
so....is there somehting i miss that anyone can help

360 500dollars REALLY??? What planet are u on?
360 = 399.99
HD-DVD addon: 199.99
thats the 600 dollars you were looking for. Only IF you want the HDDVD drive, which not many ppl atm want.
sure Xbox live is 50dollars per year, but with those 50bucks u are guaranteed FREE ONLINE PLAY unlike with the PS3. were sure the network connection might be free, but each Game Company can choose to charge you to play their game.
Get your facts straight please.
Score: 0
But with PS3, you chose which games to subscribe to.
Some games will be free to play online, others will charge, but you don't have to subscribe to all games all of the time...
Score: 0
Ahh but then again, we have no idea how much game companies are going to charge now do we? What if they charge say umm 3 bucks for the subscription?
Heck what if EA comes out and says, Ok you wana play all our games? 6bucks and you get to play em all, but then again there might be other games you wana play.
I prefer giving out my Credit Card info only once to 1 company and feeling the comfort of knowing all the games will be covered under that fee instead of having to give my Credit Card info left and right to different companies some of which might not have the best consumer privacy practices around.
So me, ill stay with 1 flat fee of 7.99 per month or the 50bucks for 12months that XBox Live has to offer.
Score: 0
Yes, but what games are you going to play?
All 3 for the PS3 are available on the 360 - you are a dolt!
Score: 0
Just to be fair, some 360 games do require additional fees. Only 1 that I know of right now, but it is possible.
But don't forget the blue ray may not be the HD device Sony expects. They failed on so many other trends (BetaMax, mini disk, etc..)
Score: 0
yeah its only 1 game and thats FFXI which is an MMORPG. Any and all MMOs will requiere and additional fee.

well, you paid that,!! i didnt!. and remember i said, my payments, but yea yeah, you have a point, but i guess we are all here to learn right=]

LOL, these Betamax arguements make me laugh, dude, it was over 30 years ago, totally irevellent to Xbox360/PS3/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray
Most of the people spouting Betamax drivel weren't even born when Betamax was around..
If anything, HD-DVD is the Betamax, as like Betamax, it's got little studio backing..
Score: 0
how about the umd? that seems like a pretty crap format. for something that can only be used in one thing.

UMD games work really well in my PSP. the UMD's don't play in anything other than a PSP, so what's your point?
It's a propitery format, but games consoles by nature they are propitery... Sony were foolish to think UMD was useful for anything other than PSP games format. It did not take a genius to predicy UMD movies failure with DVD so established.

I bought a ps2 on launch. Not getting this one. With the XBOX 360 Movie downloads coming the 22nd and almost every game on both platforms, it just doesn't make sense to get the ps3.

Don't forget the HD-DVD drive is already on sale. I don't think its public knowledge but I snaged one on friday at Eb games. I think Circuit city is selling it online too.

You do realise you could be waisting your money on that HD-DVD Drive. I wouldn't buy anything HDDVD or Blu-ray until the studios make a choice, this is no longer a consumer choice. The Movie studios have until 2007 to pick a winner. As it stands right now, Blu-ray is the clear winner just because of it's data capacity over hd dvd. So I would hold off on any nex-gen dvd platform until after January 1st.
Score: 0
Speaking of, slashdot posted an XP hack for that HD-DVD drive...
Score: 0
Isn't Broadcom or some company is working on a hybird HDDVD/Blu-Ray chip that allow a player to play both format? It could be years away. But until HD become mean stream, there is no point getting one.
Score: 0
Data capacity is really irrellevant when you consider both formats can do what they are designed to do. If HD-DVD wins, bluray could surving in the PC Data market.
And how is it a waste to spend $200 on an HD-DVD player? Even if you only rent, its only $200 and you'll likely be able to rent HD-DVD's for a minimum of a couple of years.
Plus, if you buy HD-DVD's, guess what? They'll still work if bluray wins.
so, if you want high def movies, I think its win win if you buy the HD-DVD add on now.
Score: 0
For 200 dollars I can't complain. Free movie and remote. So basically the drive was about $140. If HD-DVD doesnt work out I fine with loosing $200 bucks, not $500.

The chip is to simplyfy PRODUCTION. 1 chips insteast of 2. I don't think any company is tacking hybids seriously right now, I could be wrong thoug.

Movie studios have already made their choice, Universal have chosen HD-DVD, everyone else Blu-Ray...
Score: 0
Oh really? Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., New Line, HBO, DreamWorks, Image Entertainment, Magnolia Pictures, Brentwood Home Video, Warner Music Group, Ryko, Goldhil Entertainment, Weinstein and Studio Canal all support both formats. Don't try to make out like only one studio is putting out movies on HD-DVD.
Score: 0
I think he meant to say that the only movies you won't be seeing on Blu-Ray, is Universal Pictures movies, but there are many Blu-Ray supporting companies that arn't releasing on HD-DVD..
Then there is all the others in the middle, who support both.
From what I recall, 1 major studio not supporting Blu-Ray (Universal), 9 major studios not supporting HD-DVD, everyone else supporting both.
Score: 0
"Plus, if you buy HD-DVD's, guess what? They'll still work if bluray wins."
Except, you won't find any new releases on that format. How many laserdisc titles can you find these days?

How many Betamax titles can you find these days?
That's a really horrible comparison you made. The longevity of HD-DVD isn't comparable to that of the Laserdisc format. Laserdisc was very expensive and was only ever marketed towards a small, rich, demographic.
Hm.. Kind of like Blu-ray!

I agree with you, 200 for HD-DVD vs 600 for PS3? no contest.

I don't know, dude. I just think MS miss out on a big opportunity to fully utilize the capabilities of HDDVD. I'd rather play bigger expanded games on a HDDVD than watch the few titles that are out right now.

funny, Betamax is even LESS relevent, as that was over 30 years ago...

Key point, 9 major studios for blu-ray and 6 for HD-DVD... guess what of those 9 for blu-ray, 2 are video game studios... you guys can do the math from there.
P.S. Everytime you post garbage about blu-ray having SO much more support than HD-DVD, I'll be there.
Score: 0
Thats the great thing about it, one can choose to get HD movies on the 360, its not forced on you. I bought my 360 a while back. So saying it was $600 is irelevant because I haven't had to recently budget $600 , only $200. Or if I didn't want HD I'd still be fine, and have spent less than the PS3.

Looks like a pretty dam good purchase if you dont have a xbox too... since some vista editions come with the media hub

Over a year old. Many things have changed since then...
P.S. Everytime you try to fool people about HD-DVD, I'll be there.

it does not work out of the box with Vista. Someone has found a driver for the USB support, it allows access to the filesystem on the HD-DVD disk, but does not decrypt the encoded movie content, for that you need software, which is not available.
The driver is only a small part of what required to use the HD-DVD drive in a PC for movie playback. Currently the driver provides file access only..

Damn it Marky... prove the link wrong then. Whether its old or not, I'll take the info as true unless PROVEN otherwise. Give me proof of your statements.
PS Haven't fooled anyone, its all true. Atleast I have a basis for my claims, you just rant garbage out of your ass. Also, if you give a link, make damn sure it doesn't have blu-ray or sony in the domain name...

Might pay to check your facts first.
The driver you are refering to was for Windows XP and the article made that VERY clear.
Vista works out of the box with the hddvd addon AND there is several software packages that can play HDDVD and has been for some time.
