A better Bing? Betanews 'Name That Search Engine' contest winners
By the Betanews Staff | Published June 5, 2009, 3:45 PM
It's not as easy as it looks, is it? The key here was to come up with not only a better name for a search engine than "Bing" (among those who believe there is one), but a tagline that would help frame a marketing campaign for the product. We didn't care whether the .com name for the URL was already taken. That's never stopped Microsoft before, including with Live.com -- if the name's good enough, it would have the resources to put down serious money for it.
Six Betanews staff members cast votes for first, second, and third place, with first place getting three points, second place two, and third place one. After a week of intense competition (I have to exhaust my bucket of superlatives somewhere), here are the final results:
1st place: ConceptJunkie with NARO. "Why wade through a million search results? NARO it down to what you want." (12 points)
2nd place: PC_Tool with RESULT. "It's not the search. It's the answer." (8 points)
3rd place: Straspey with MUSE (Microsoft Universal Search Engine). "Search the universe through our window." (5 points)
There was a very, very tight race for third place, with Coolbuster's QUERY tying for points. How would the tie be broken? Both QUERY and MUSE had three staff members voting on their behalf. And both had one first-place vote: Scott Fulton liked QUERY because it's direct, dry, and dowdy like himself; Tim Conneally liked MUSE because it's clever and "decidedly dorky." (Right, and "Bing" isn't dorky?)
So it came down to the slimmest of hairs for the tie-breaking vote, which ended up being cast by one of the slimmest of editors. Editor-in-Chief Nate Mook cast a third-place vote for MUSE, which put it on the podium. Congratulations to our winners, and yes you actually do win stuff. Make certain the e-mail addresses in your Betanews profiles are up-to-date, and we'll be in touch.
First Prize: The four-disc Batman Begins / Dark Knight Blu-ray combo pack, plus a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate.
Second Prize: A copy of Gears of War II for Xbox 360, plus a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate.
Third Prize: A copy of Office 2007 Home/Student Edition.

First of all, her name is Angela. Second, the contest was Nate Mook's creation and I wrote the rules. The reference to Name That Tune was merely to recall a contest from the (now-distant) past, not to imply anything about the rules. I'm sorry for people who drew that implication, but I must admit it's something of a stretch.

As far as this "debate", I feel it is "Much Ado about Nothing". The contest is done and in the scheme of life is no big deal so how about everyone letting the dead horse stay buried.

|So...for all those who want to get technical, consider:
"Name that Search Engine in Four Notes or Less"
She's referring to the notes of a song. The "notes" on the musical scale are labeled as:
C E D F G and B.
My Entry: RESULT.
The only letter in that entry that matches a note is the letter E. So...my entry has only *one* note in it. For the mathematically challenged: 1 is *less* than 4, so I named that search engine in "Less than Four Notes." :)
Point being, anyone wanting to get technical could make that mean pretty much anything they want to, even going to the extreme example above.
Does it make any difference at all? No. The BN staff can do whatever they want on their site, up to an including nullifying all entries and pretending this never happened.
Personally? I liked MUSE the best...(and that's only got one note in it too) *grin*

Again, explicit vs. implied. Look it up. Yeah, you claim it doesn't matter? All that means is you don't know squat about what can and cannot be enforced in anything remotely resembling a contractual agreement. (We're all shocked....really)
*laughing*
Taken literally, we would all have had to use names that used only the letters corresponding to the notes on the musical scale. Do you want to take it that far? No? And for those who are making accusations of impropriety and unfairness in how the competition was run, please back up your accusations with some facts other than you have a personal dislike for one of the members of this forum.
Finally, for the rest of you who can't stop scratching your itch about the "4-letter" BS - Guess what ? The mods of Betanews don't have to ask for your input or permission to run a silly little contest and BOO-HOO - life is not fair.

After a couple of years of watching you and some others debate, you can always tell when you are losing because you start resorting to insults. |First of all, even though some of the rules were not entirely followed, my complements to the winners. I would also complement all who took part for some of the very creative responses.
In light of this new contest approach, I have proposed to Betanews a new contest. Since I believe that, despite the sometimes trench and gaseous warfare that goes on, behind each SN is a person with a heart and soul.
So I have proposed a new contest and I will put up the money for it and I have told Betanews that whatever proof they need, I will give.
The contest will consist of a series of questions and the 1st 3 people that get all the questions right in ONE posting will get the following:
1st place- 500.00 donated in the person's name to the charity of their choice.
2nd place- 250.00 donated in the person's name to the charity of their choice.
3rd place- 100.00 donated in the name of the person to the charity of their choice.
If you want the donation based on your SN, that is ok.
A couple of points:
1) Only one answer per person and when the contest starts which is up to Betanews, no more creations of SN will be allowed for multiple entries.
2) Relatives and pets do not constitute a charity. :)
3) Charity must be based in U.S.
4) Winners will be based on the time stamp and if a question arises on this issue, I leave it to Betanews to decide.
Finally, this is a chance for everyone from the highly intelligent to the "barely standing upright" to show that they do have a heart and soul. I believe most of you do but we will see. All questions that must be answered are "right or wrong"- there is no ambiguity.
Good luck and I hope my faith in all of you and Betanews is not misplaced.

If one feels strongly about this then don't come here or post. Otherwise, accept it and move on. Nobody said life was fair and while PC's Name violated the rules, his tagline was very good.
One other point, you know a contest is not fully thought out when even the staff didn't know the rules. Hence, Coolbuster's "Query" which was tied for 3rd violated the rules. Over the years, I’ve watched you and Scott joust and, yes, if someone walked in on one post, they would come away with a different view than one that sees the years of lover’s jousting- like behavior. So, to Betanews I say post the voting of all judges and let’s see what it looks like and to Gunn I ask a simple question and that is this; Did you mean 4 letters or less or not? If you did then you and betanews owes an apology to everyone for intentionally letting Pc slip through the cracks.
The more you protest the more you sound defensive. The more you talk about explicit versus implicit just shows your defensiveness and highlights the problem with the contest. People who took this seriously and played by the rules have a right to be mad but...hey…that’s life.
And the day Scott bans you is the day betanews shuts down. I didn’t so I could care less but I did pick up on Gunn’s lame attempt to tie the number of letters to a lame show called “Name that tune”.
Keep in mind PC, I am not being critical because that is the nature of this place. People are treated differently. If someone else besides you had made some of the comments you have made then they would have gotten banned and their entry probably would not have been considered. Such is life.

|Nah, I think I'll keep Vista. If only in hopes that it will qualify for the free Win7 upgrade.
Regarding the Wii... We'll be getting one in about 3 months. Specifically *for* the WiiFit (and upcoming BioMetric-related "game"). It may not be a "Gym Membership", but it'll be far better than "nothing". ;) Give it some time. Everyone I personally know who owns one loves it.
Fun stuff. I'm sure I'll get a facebook hit tonight yet or tomorrow. Someone out there has killed their GoWII media by now... *grin*

|As Angela mentioned in her follow-up, Microsoft could easily buy any domain they were targeting, so it really wouldn't matter in the scope of this "what-if?" game.
Of course, if you're looking to start your own search engine, I would be more than happy to license the use of my slogan to you, for a reasonable fee, of course. *wicked grin*
