AMD Bests Intel in October Retail Sales
By Ed Oswald | Published November 8, 2005, 3:59 PM
AMD appears to be making serious progress at chipping away Intel's dominance of the PC industry, as the company was able to narrowly beat out its larger rival in terms of systems sold at retail during the month of October, according to data from research firm Current Analysis.
The chipmaker had a slight lead in the desktop space in September, but was able to increase its strength this past month and overtake Intel overall. In total, 49.8 percent of retail systems included an AMD processor versus 48.5 percent running an Intel chip.
The news comes as a dramatic reversal of the company's fortunes from this spring. From October 2004 to April 2005 AMD saw its market share fall from a little over 35 percent to less than 20 percent, while Intel's share climbed from around 60 percent to near 80 percent during the same period.
One possible reason for the uptick in sales could be higher brand recognition following AMD's much-publicized suit against Intel for anti-competitive business practices. The suit was filed in late June; since that time AMD's share has increased every month except for one, in August.
If AMD is able to maintain this momentum through the all-important fourth quarter retail season, it would be quite significant, analysts say.
"AMD did the unthinkable by surpassing Intel in October. Continuing to hold this lead in the holiday season would be a colossal win for the company," Current Analysis Research Director Matt Sargent said.
Wal-Mart is widely rumored to soon offer a $398 PC and notebook system with AMD processors, which the firm says is indicative of the company's newfound retail strength.
By system type, AMD's desktop share shot up to 67.7 percent in October from 52 percent the month before. On the laptop side, AMD had 31.5 percent of the market, versus 26.2 percent in September.
AMD still trails Intel in terms of PC revenue share, 57.6 to 40.1 percent, however this is due to the average selling price of an AMD PC being significantly lower than that of Intel machines.
It should be noted that retail sales figures do not include companies such as Dell, which is the top PC manufacturer in the world and primarily ships Intel-based computers. Hewlett-Packard also sells its systems through non-retail channels.
Yeah! AMD will beat Intel in the near future it is sure >>

|Not that big a deal. The retail market isn't nearly the size of the direct sales market now. Dell is about 17% of the entire PC market, and they aren't even included in the above retail figures. Intel is still holding a commanding overall lead in the PC market despite these incremental gains by AMD.
It's not like AMD is really developing any brand loyalty with retail sales either. If you have ever strolled though a CompUSA or BestBuy and watched the people who buy computers, they usually have no idea what an "AMD" is or even care, they are simply looking for the cheapest computer they can find. 99% of the time, that means picking an AMD machine. This is further demonstrated by the fact that Intel is still kicking AMD's a** in the revenue share part of retail sales which is all that really matters from a business standpoint.
Selling loads of computers while barely (if at all) making a profit on them just to increase market share is an awful way to try and grow a business and increase revenue. AMD commanded 2/3's of the sales volume, yet collected only 40% of the revenue. That's not very good. So long as Intel continues to win the making money part of the equation, I doubt they much care how many computers AMD CPU's are in.
I'm no Intel appologist either, all my computers except my laptops have been AMD for years, but the facts are the facts. This isn't nearly as a big as the AMD fanboys would like you to believe. A healthy/successful company generates large sums of money, not just large sales volumes.

|Also this is STRICTLY US SALES, not worldwide market share. It is also only for processors, but intel chipsets outnumber AMD chipsets roughly 3 to 1. Remember, ATI is not the biggest graphics chipset seller, nor is NVIDIA--Intel by far overwhelms them both. This is why AMD has a very long way to go if they expect to be anywhere near Intel as far as market share.
Now, if Dell were to sell (and push) AMD systems, Intel would be in trouble. However, as Dell has never sold an AMD processor based system (besides the rumored "underground" Opteron Poweredge servers), they likely never will. Intel gives Dell the best prices for Intel processors because they will not use AMD. However, now that the XPS 600 uses an NVIDIA chipset (though still a P4 processor) and not Intel, we'll see how Intel responds...

|They beat Intel in US market share in September as well...way to go AMD! Hopefully both Intel and AMD will be neck-'n-neck so we can have cheaper processors. Of course as stated before, AMD is still nowhere near Intel as far as market share, but the closer they get, the more competitive Intel and AMD will be, and that's good for everybody.

Quite simply: If AMD can ramp up supplies (their biggest weakness,) and save distributors money, win their case with Intel, it would be silly of Apple not to consider AMD.
