AOL Launches Next-Generation AIM

By Nate Mook | Published November 22, 2005, 12:45 PM

AOL's next-generation AIM release, known as Triton, is officially out the door and replaces AIM 5.9 as the company's default instant messaging client. Triton aims to bring together text, voice and video chat and has become the veritable front door to AOL's services.

The new release features one-click access to AOL Explorer, Search, AOL and AIM Mail, AIM Talk and the new TotalTalk VoIP calling service. Triton additionally bundles a new AIM Address Book that syncs with Plaxo, and offers built-in access to AOL Radio featuring 20 XM music stations.

From a new tabbed messaging interface that corrals all chat sessions into a single window, a user can transition from standard IMs to SMS text messaging, AIM Talk voice calling or streaming video with one click. Multi-party voice chat with up to 20 buddies is now supported in AIM Talk.

The Triton Buddy List has been upgraded as well, with support for 500 contacts and "type down" searching.

AOL has rebuilt AIM from the ground up, says Chamath Palihapitiya, vice president and general manager of AIM and ICQ. And the changes are hard to miss; the client introduces an entirely new, simplified user interface. The underlying code is also modular, enabling AOL to tack on additional features over time.

"With the inclusion of our free AIM Mail product, we expect AIM to remain the most viral, social and popular communications application among the Internet generation," added Palihapitiya. AOL's new Buddy Info feature will take advantage of the service's social nature by letting users post and read comments about AIM Profiles.

Initially, AOL had planned to include a beta version of AIM Talk Plus with Triton 1.0, which would have enabled users to make calls to standard telephone numbers. But the company has separated the products for now and currently plans to launch the new service in the first half of 2006.

Although AIM Triton will remain an optional upgrade, users will be prompted to download the new client, AOL says. The software is only supported on Windows 2000, Windows XP and newer.

AIM Triton 1.0.2 is available for download from FileForum.

I would love to simply signoff of my AIM account indefinitely. Unfortunately, convincing many of my friends to switch to more productive networks has proven futile, since they have an equally difficult time convincing their countless friends and family members to do the same, etc etc. Too many people are "invested" in it with their friends and family, so mass migration is difficult. Especially since AOL refuses to open up their network to other IM networks.

That being said, I do find alternative methods of AIM connection--- Trillian, Miranda, and GAIM-- to be very productive in eliminating my use of AOL's horrible products and limiting my use of their network.

I dont understand how so many things that Ive just found can be passed for non-beta release by "professional" developers.

Oh yeah! You also can't uninstall it completely. If you uninstall AIM, it takes AOL Explorer with it, but leave aolsoftware.exe behind, and in the registry and startup so you it loads no matter what! Oh, and there's no uninstaller for it, so the casual user (if they decide to uninstall Triton), is stuck with aolsoftware.exe forever!

The only thing in life that is truly "forever" is death... everything else can ended, done away with, removed, terminated, or suspended.

If the casual user doesn't know how to remove it, it is most likely because they don't know it exists. Even though it consumes system resources needlessly, it's probably not bothering them.

Don't get me wrong, I despise all things AOL and don't support this crap at all, but eventually they'll have someone who knows about computers look at their machine, and it will be removed.

Ya, it's nice and all, but Triton is a RESOURCE HOG. If you've got a low end computer, don't expect to do much else besides AIM at the same time.

The installer is too big. 15 mb? What's with that? Too many services. They should release a streamlined version and you can add whatever you want in the form of easy-to-install plugins.

Triton is visually appealing and the tabbed chatting is great, but you can get that and more (with a smaller install and less system requirements) with Trillian.

My verdict: stick with 5.9, unless you NEED the talk feature and the webcam improvements (because god knows you can't do jack with webcams and aim...)

I tried it out last night. My main gripe is that it is terribly slow. Second gripe: I HATE the ad that displays initially in new IM windows. You can collapse the ad, but it is disruptive and annoying. It also contributes to the CPU lag.

And my last gripe: I DONT WANT AOL EXPLORER AND I DON"T WANT THE STUPID AOL SERVICE APP TO BE INSTALLED ON MY COMPUTER.

AIM does not need to have a service. This again contributes to bloat. I'll stick with gaim for now.

This build is nowhere near GM-ready! If you go onto the AOL Messageboards, you'll notice that there are still a lot of bugs in it. Of course the responses from the Beta team have been that these "bugs" are actually intentional.

For example, AIM now runs two process: aolsoftware.exe and aim6.exe. What nobody tells you is that aolsoftware.exe runs on startup and there's no way to disable this (unless of course using a system configurator)! What the hell is that?! Granted that there are many similar processes, but this is an instant messenger application for heaven's sake!

And you can't uninstall AOL Explorer! Big big problems (or issues) that need to be fixed.
