AOL Offering Free Antivirus Software
By Ed Oswald | Published August 7, 2006, 1:51 PM
AOL on Monday release a free software-based virus scanning service powered by technology from Kaspersky Labs. The software includes technology to enable real-time scanning of files and e-mail, and would update automatically each hour.
Called Active Virus Shield, the product is available for download starting today. It arrives as part of AOL's new initiative to provide its products at no cost to users. "With so many consumers online with inadequate security safeguards, it is time to make things like virus protection a fundamental right, not a risk," Digital Services president John McKinley said.
After installation, the application will continuously monitor for threats. Also, in an effort to make the process as invisible as possible, AOL has tuned the service to allocate more computer resources during periods of increased use. This way, the virus-scanning process would not interfere with system performance.
In addition, Active Virus Shield also includes an IE toolbar that provides real-time data on security status, as well as provide a password manager, pop-up blocker, and a link to the Whois domain registration database.
"In today's environment of organized cybercrime and ever-changing online threats, it's more important than ever for consumers to have comprehensive virus and spyware protection that's continuously updated and easy-to-use," said Steve Orenberg, President, Kaspersky Labs.
Free virus protection may also help to solve the issue of so many users leaving themselves vulnerable by running no anti-virus software at all. According to a survey by AOL, 56 percent of computer users either had no protection, or had not updated their virus software in the past seven days.
after installed the Active Virus Shield, the stupid program lock my network, other pc can't access my share file :(
try to find solution, when to www.Active Virus Shield.com FAQ, they give me this stupid answer that don't solve anything...
Q. My Internet or network connection does not function after I have installed Active Virus Shield under Windows XP Service Pack 2. Why?
A. If your computer connects to Internet via local network and the connection disappears after you install Active Virus Shield, make sure the embedded Windows Firewall is disabled to rectify the problem.
...and why do AOL/kespersky asked we to turn off our pc firewall? Are they suggest that we open the door to welcome hacker?

|From what I've observed between both engines. This new Active Virus Scan is effective but a little slow compared to "Safety & Security Center".. Took 3 hours to completely scan my hd. On a unique note, AVAST would only take 30mins or less (faster engine). For it's sole purpose it does the job, as does the security toolbar included for IE but this just made my family a little uneasy with the computer so tightly controlled. Returning back to AVAST.

|While I am sure this is good software, I can assure that anyone who signs up to get this software is in for a load of problems with AOL.
I signed up, installed the software and it locked up my computer badly, but I did manage to fix that and get it out. I called AOL on the phone to cancell the account and that was a trip and a half. They desired to persue to argue with me, that they could fix the problem and I would not have to cancel the account.
Then they went on to say, there could be early cancellation fee's (and I signed up under the FREE AOL on line and that was totally ignored when I said it, they like to outtalk you) and that there could be download fee's and online fee's associated with this account.
They threaten people to get their own way but it did not work with me. I told them I would not debate this with them and gave no financial information to them. They use these tactics to intimidate people. You may have gotten free software and it may be good software, but those who signup for this have a real AOL account free or not and it could incurr charges so they so politely informed me. I just got off the phone with them after bickering with them.
Caution is the word here, so do not think yourself too smart for getting free software, you may well have gotten free problems too! Oh and one more thing, you have to give your phone number when you signup and I found out tonight after talking with them, they can bill you through your phone number.
