ATI Win2K Drivers Delayed - Again

By Aaron Dobbins | Published October 5, 2000, 8:57 PM

ATI has updated the FAQ on their Web site about Windows 2000 drivers for its popular line of Rage Pro graphics cards. After an initial release date of July being pushed back, it appears that the release date of such drivers is going to be delayed yet again. According to the FAQ, ATI is "experiencing difficulties with some of the key elements of the code that must be resolved before the driver and multimedia application are released to the public." For more information read the FAQ over at ATI.

I'm still waiting WinTV drivers for Win2000. I had to PAY for the driver update for Win98! How retarded is that?

Never again will I buy an ATI product.

Heh, even 3dfx released Windows 2000 drivers for the Voodoo 3 & 4/5 cards a while after its release.
I realyl can't see what could take so long, its a single chip card, its like the MAXX range which will never work in Win2k.

I remember ATI released all those hardware specs so developers can write ATI hardware drivers for various platforms, such as Linux. I have heard of Linux GATOS project, anyone knows any Windoze version of it?

Or I guess I am just stucked with ATI's beta win2k drivers :(

ATI has had years(!!) to develop these drivers! Windows 2000 has been in beta way before 2000. nVidia had drivers that supported oGL and worked "pretty well" before windows 2000 was even out!

Ooh, oh, you're experiencing difficulties with the code? I understand--programming is really hard, isn't it? Maybe you guys should invest in a windows 2000 for dummies book or something. There is no excuse--NO EXCUSE--for the time it has taken for these drivers to come out. MS wrote an entire OS in the time it has taken you to get out drivers for a video card.

If anybody from ATI is reading this: If you think not having drivers for your Rage Pro cards is going to make me want to buy one of your newer cards, you are laughably wrong. ATI, you will not get future customers if you cannot even accomodate the needs of your current customers. Note that many of your current and future customers are one and the same. Cancel that, many of nVidia's current and future customers are one and the same. Your only future customers are suckers. And I am not a sucker.

As Windows 2000 was launched in Feb 2000 if my memory serves me right, it is completely unacceptable the legnth of time ATI has taken to release a non-beta driver, for this reason alone I will never buy another ATI product again. In addition to a non-beta driver not being available for my Xpert 2000 (Rage 128 Chipset) ATI has choosen to make available a release, non-beta driver for their RADEON chipset, http://support.atitech.c...ivers/win2k_503035.html i would almost go as far to call it insulting that they have choosen to dedicate their resources at ATI to developing a driver for the most current and expensive ATI products and have neglected the same progress on the other chipsets such as the Rage 128 and Rage 128 Pro. I can't imagine any current Win2k user with an ATI card that would ever consider buying another ATI product.

I agree
ATI will NEVER EVER get another piece of thier hardware in any machine that I own or build for people. I am pissed at the fact that the Radeon is out for a month or 2 and new drivers galore. I got the ALL in wonder 32mb card because it was fresh out and had the idea that I would get some support for it. Man was i wrong. I am writing to ATI now to ask for money back due to the lack of support and drivers. Would you drive a car that only ran on 3 cylinders and wasnt firing properly.. no youd take it back and want it sorting. On paper the ard is very good. Just a shame they cant write drivers or for that matter let us know what the problems are so at least we could be sympathetic. Information.. great tool

Yeah, and HP STILL hasn't put out more than "just print" drivers for their OfficeJet All-in-One units. At least ATI puts out beta drivers that actually work for more than just one part (my experience, anyway).

Yeah, HP is pissing me off, first they said June 12 for the BETA drivers, and then they said June 17, and then July 17, las time I looked, it was in August, and it still said July 17th.... How hard can it be to write the darn thing...

If you are referring to the All In One drivers for the G series of products, the drivers (on CD ONLY) have been available for nearly 4-weeks!
Get off you computer and dial HP directly on telephone! They have the Driver CD (for Windows 2000 and Windows 9x, etc) all ready to go - and have been shipping it for the past month to people/business' who read their web page and follow their directions to CALL THEM and request the CD.
I did and it arrived within 4-days.

Actually, the drivers are for my All-in One 600. THOSE drivers are still not ready, with no set time for being available.

I understand how you feel considering that i have an ATI All-in-Wonder 128 and the multimedia center has been in beta and drivers since who knows when, but ATI is not going downhill, have you seen the Radeon yet? Or is it still considered a figment of your imagination! Best craphics i have seen in awhile besides some of Matrox cards which i love!

This is more or less a repost of a posting I made earlier about ATI drivers. I still own a Rage Fury, and the drivers aren't 100% yet. Buy a next-generation ATI card? Hah.

Nothing wrong with ATI's hardware, but they don't seem to be able to write software to run on it. I'd buy one of their All-in-Wonder TV tuners if I thought it'd work.

The hardware reviewers really ought to start rating ATI's performance at 0fps given the state of their drivers.

im still stuck with a ATI Xpert 2000 and I'm tired of ATIs mess. everytime i think i will get a new driver for it the realese date gets moved back. ATI needs to get there stuff strait or get out of the graphics buisness.

Yeah.. im waiting on the drivers for my ATI Expert 2000 as well.. I wish that they would hurry.

nVidia can't make decent Win2k drivers either, in fact, they just plain suck.

The latest ones do have problems, but try the "old" 3.81 drivers from http://www.3dchipset.com/beta/nvidia/list.html. I've been using them for months with no problems on my TNT2. For me, games are visibly smoother with the old drivers. MUCH smoother. (I would assume the explanation is they optimized the latest drivers for the GeForce, leaving TNT performance to suffer.)

Still waiting for ATI TV-Wonder drivers for Win2k.

If ATI TV-Wonder wasn't the first TV Tuner in my area, I woulda save myself a lot of headache. And I just ordered Pinnacle PCTV Pro for about the same price I bought the damn TV-Wonder. PCTV pro is great on win9x, win2k, got great support, and tons of features and thick manual!

After unplugging the TV-Wonder, my home networked computers are ATI-Free! weeee..

They just pushed back the ATI TV Wonder drivers to October, it said September at one point. ATI has the WORST driver reputation in the industry as far as I'm concerned. As for the Radeon... I'll be amazed if they can even get a decent OpenGL driver out, never mind the driver itself...
