AT&T Cuts Anti-Bush Lyrics from Webcast

By Ed Oswald | Published August 10, 2007, 4:31 PM

AT&T is trying to quell criticism after monitors it hired cut two lines of anti-Bush lyrics from its webcast of a Pearl Jam concert in Chicago earlier this week.

The company said in a statement Thursday that the lyrics should not have been censored. The rock band was singing a cover of the Pink Floyd track "Another Brick in the Wall." Instead of the line "teacher, leave those kids alone," lead singer Eddie Vedder replaced it with his own lyrics.

In the first chorus, the line "George Bush, find yourself another home" was used, while in the second "George Bush, leave this world alone" was sung. Monitors apparently found these lines objectionable, and cut them from the webcast, which was on a slight delay.

Both the band and Internet advocates used the incident to promote the cause of net neutrality, which calls for laws that prohibit bandwidth owners from giving preferential treatment to content or media that benefits them.

"What happened to us this weekend was a wake up call, and it's about something much bigger than the censorship of a rock band," the band said in a statement on its Web site.

AT&T, however, insisted the edit was a mistake, and was taking steps to prevent it from happening again in the future. In addition, the company was looking into licensing the song to play it on Blue Room, its multimedia portal.

AT&T has a right to censor anything that they are promoting. If they do not feel it is appropriate - they can stop it. They were footing the bill for the concert and they have every right to classify something as distributable or not.

The fact that these bands get up and think they're so clever and so "with it" makes me want to puke. They have their "fame" because of the way of life we have in this country - if they tried to do the same thing in Iran, Palastine, Saudi Arabia, China - they would have been beheaded or thrown into jail for a very long time.

I think they have the right to their opinions. That's one of the beautiful things that this country has going for it. But to try and spread their propoganda and their hate in a venue where it doesn't belong - is deplorable and speaks very little for them.

Has anyone seen the movie 300? I found it to be an interesting commentary on what happened then to what's happening now.

There is a scene roughly in the middle of the movie where we see the Leonidis talking about baseness of the Persions and how if they cannot stand against them, they will sweep in and destroy Sparta. That they are savages who will enslave everyone they come across as they plow over every nation.

Then they cut to the Senate in Sparta and we hear the back stabbing SOB go on about how Sparta must stay neutral and not interfere with Perisa. That they must basically sit back and do nothing and then he goes on to critize Leonidis, claiming him to be crazy and seeking to wage war for war's sake. (roughly paraphrasing).

We find out after a while that this SOB in the senate has been on the take from Persia and is a traitor to his country and has been seeking to undermine the country from the get go.

Now, I'm not saying that the members of our congress are on the take from the Al'Qeda - but I found it rather interesting that we find ourselves in a similar situation.

We have a group of savages who are hell bent on destruction of everything we know as civilized life - not just here in America - but across the globe - and there are very few voices willing to stand up and say - "Not on my watch".

Instead we have the press and our very own "esteemed" body of congress standing up and bashing not only our president, but our troops as well.

Well, I'm sure having seen the movie, we know how things went for Sparta in the end. Is this what we really want to have happen here? Or anywhere else for that matter?

Don't think it will happen? That's what that senator thought in 300.

Very interesting read. For the most part I agree with you. The people on the left want to fight with the people on the right and visa a versa. No one is being helped with the bickering just do something positive already. The system is areal joke right now. Everyone will critique others but in turn offer no solutions themselves.

AT&T doesn't own the content. They have no express right to censor it. Yeah, here's the thing. If you want to apply the plot/actions of 300 to todays world then you need to get it right. We, America, are the Persia of the modern world. We attack when we have not been attacked as Persia did to Sparta. Just as Sparta rose up so will those whom we attack. They will not sit back and do nothing. If you want to puke that's your business but you make a mess and you'll clean it up.

Gotcha. You're either in denial, or completely out of touch with reality.

Were there any pro-democrat or anti-democrat sayings that were left in the concert? I didn't watch and I don't intend to, but I'm just wondering if they did. If not, I'd say they were just keeping the playing field even. Not biased or prejudice, for or against either party. Seems like commonsense to me.

King George acting directly, or through his corporate censors must protect us from such at all costs. As a good corporate citizen/censor, AT$T must be commend for protecting us from those inflammatory anti-Bush lyrics. Good job AT$T.

Woops, AT$T said their censorship/editing was just a mistake. Couldn’t have anything to do with that Email from AT$T legal department entitled something like “How to Stop a Congressional Inquiry on the matter” or “We wouldn’t want any prying eyes looking too close, right?”
