An ad about nothing: First Seinfeld + Gates ad omitted Vista

By Tim Conneally | Published September 5, 2008, 2:06 PM

Just minutes after viewing the first installment of Microsoft's new $300 million TV ad campaign featuring comedian Jerry Seinfeld and Chairman Bill Gates, BetaNews' Tim Conneally filed this video to record his first thoughts.

BetaNews' Tim Conneally shares his first thoughts on the premiere Microsoft + Seinfeld ad. (Do forgive Tim, he started out thinking this was next Tuesday.)

The premiere ad itself, entitled "Shoe Circus." (Tagline: The Future. Delicious. [Microsoft logo])

Dude... seriously... stop.

Whatever type of writer/reporter/news anchor you want to become, just stop. You're making other writer/reporter/news anchor wannabe's look bad.

This was horrible. I made it two and a half minutes into this and realized that I'd rather spend the remaining five minutes in search of a way for me to bite my own nose.

Take a lesson from the Seinfeld/Gates commercial: If you absolutely have to produce something horrible, throw in a few cheap punch lines to keep your audience amused enough to stick around.

A stupid 8 minute review of a 2 minute commercial? This was poor in every way. Stopped it at 92 seconds. Next time plan in advance what you're going to say and try not to look too creepy (get some advice and make sure to rehearse). Verdict: Video diarrhea.

yeah, i saw the ad a few days ago and i wasn't impressed with it.

i think Bill Gates is a great guy but the ad could have been a lot better and without Seinfeld. in fact i could have provided a better suggestion.

people have never forgiven the Seinfeld show for not having African Americans or Latinos take part in their sitcom. plus Seinfeld was never funny anyways. it was always my opinion that his act was more of a whine-ediam, perhaps funny to the alcoholics.

therefore, one wonders what audience is Microsoft trying to capture by the ad.

one is left with the ending of Bill Gates rear end twitching. is it supposed to mean: "kiss it" or "smell it" or "see how big my butt is"

the world may never know.

Score: 0

|

I never understood the popularity of Seinfeld either but given the show's success they can probably do very well without your better suggestion. Then again I never understood Apple's marketing success by insulting potential clients. People must be really insecure in general.

What the ad specifically does is making fun of the oh so cool Mac type. You see one of the wealthiest men on earth in a penny store not giving a damn about being cool or hip. 2 guys outside of trendiness and need to impress.

Score: 0

i can see where yours persepctive is coming from because i noticed the same observations as well.

however, it is what people leave with at the end of the message that counts. and i left with an image of a shaking booty and a smelly ad.

unfortunately, the ad may actually hurt microsoft because it re affirms mac's ad as being cleaner, clearer and friendlier.

i think this is a 300 million dollar error. for this kind of money something more appealing could have been produced.

because there is so much garbage and low quality television, that it would have been easy to make something outstanding.

simplicity is what all americans living in a complex world are
seeking.

i don't see shopping in a discount store by the worlds richest man as a "down to earth" message.

however, i will admit that perhaps seinfeld is representative of the mac audience, white and upper class.

Geez... Ok, was that really a review? For the first 3 minutes it's a lame diatribe attempting to highlight the author's ability to use 'buzz words'. Lame review on a lame commercial. Honestly, the commercial was more amusing - though still pointless.

How about a short, simple ad with the Mac vs PC guys and the PC guy just beats the crap out of the Mac guy with a baseball bat?

Score: 0

|

Oh, so, in other words, you want the ad guy to try to do what MS tries to do with everyone in the industry marketplace through bundling requirements and effective market control where, if they can't buy them, they try to drive them out of the market.

...It might work.

But do they really need an ad to simply amplify that which most are already far too aware?

Why not just a 300 pound moron leaning on the little guy and simply saying "You WILL use Windows..." But again, it seems silly to spend big bucks to simply reflect reality.

I bet Tim didn't know that having hair covering one eye most of the time will make that eye not as strong as the uncovered eye. I had my eye doctor tell me that back when I was a teenager & my hair did the same thing.
But always messing with your hair to get it out of your eye is a good way to cover up having a tick. (tick, a physical action that is uncontrollable).
Hey, I'm not being judgmental really, it's just a reaction to the constant way he has to move the hair out of his way. I would part it in the middle so when it hangs down in my eyes, both eyes would go bad at the same time.

you need to ask yourself why did MSFT release a commerical like this? what are they trying to achieve? is there something your missing? this Ad is NOT targeted to anyone who would read BetaNews. or considers themselves a Geek. your NOT the demographic these are targeted to.

what was the point of Geico's Caveman commericals? they were differn't... people started getting interested in watching them just to see what would happen next. they got such a following that ABC even launched a TV series based on them.I don't know the MS marketing plan, but I'm curious.. what's the next Ad going to be about.?

maybe you'll see them both get into a new Ford Car driving down the road.. that just happens to have Wireless internet, VOIP hands free calling + Navigation software that intelligently re-routes your trip based on traffic congestion and streams Audio from your home based Vista PC direct to your car driving down the road.. (MSFT did sign an agreement with both Ford & Fiat for some type of OS preinstalled to offer wireless type features in cars)

maybe the Ad shows the two sitting down to watch TV at home.. The TV is running a version of Vista, talks to the rest of your Home electronics.. if you think this is a joke.

"Microsoft Corp announced today (06/2007) an agreement with Sichuan Changhong Electric (a major Chinese TV manufacturer) to jointly develop entertainment products that will link the Internet, PC's and TV home entertainment systems"

"I still believe in our vision: a computer on every desk and in every home, all running Microsoft software" Bill Gates Oct 1995 fortune magazine quote.

It isn't until Seinfeld actually says the word "Microsoft" in the final ten seconds of the commercial that the viewer has any idea what's going on. And all of you sat there and watched it intently, trying to figure out what the hell this ad is about.

I get sick of hearing this asinine response that only reinforces the ignorance of the very folks that continue to cite it!

One might better ask if Microsoft ever heard of XEROX PARC? As if they did, they had as little clue as what to do with the technology as Xerox did!

It only took MS ~10 years to simply make a sh!tty copy of innovations like a GUI that Apple actually brought to market instead of simply talking about it and scratching their @sses in a lab as Xerox did.

Its funny, as elsewhere on the site we keep reading of all the same genuiuses here who whine that patent law shouldn't protect simple ideas at the expense of those who actually produce something.

Well, Apple produced something. They assumed the financial risk of bringing a heretofore unknown technological innovation to market. It was ONLY after they succeeded that Microsoft simply copied what Apple actually had the cahonies to take a financial risk and bring to market!

So effectively, YES, MS got the mouse and the GUI from Apple. Apple didn't develop all of it, yet they did innovate and successfully turn the mouse and GUI from just a lab concept into a viable commercial product that was successful in the commercial market. And yes, MS copied it.

And MS doing what MS does well, they simply marketed it.

But I love your question: "How?" And that is exactly the point. You, and MS didn't have any idea of how to take an original idea and effectively turn it into an effective market product. But let someone else do the more difficult R&D and you and MS are right there to claim it as their own and make a premier reason to buy their derivative products.

"How?", indeed...

Its nice that fools such as yourself can quote phrases from history without having a clue as to the implications of the significance of that which they cite.

And Yes, Xerox Parc did develop it. Their problem was that they had their heads so far up their @ss that they couldn't figure out a viable way to actually employ it in a successful product!

Ooops! Gee, does that make a difference? Duh!

Deal with it fanboy.

Look, anyone who depends upon Wikipedia to explain the history of the mouse to someone IS clueless!

And the fact was, the Mac didn't need a multi-button mouse any more than the resizing of the windows needed multiple adjustments to re-size to just large enough to include the contents without being too large or too small as is ALWAYS the case in Windows. And before you attribute a 3 button mouse to Windows, it was UNIX that brought it to the fore!

And mentioning Xerox PARC as if their complete and utter failure to take a concept (hell, ANY concept) and actually put it to practical use in NO WAY invalidates Apple's innovative use of the GUI - a technique Windows copied 10 years later! Duh.

Apple was responsible for seemlessly incorporating both a GUI and the mouse into their environment instead of treating both as secondary add-ons - just as Vista simply adds 'purtiness' to their OS without adding functionality.

Obviously you aren't confused,as you are too F#$%@ ignorant to even have a clue as to what you don't know!

A limited market allows for much less leeway as you lack the supporting sales of additional products that will act to subsidize innovative experiments. In a limited market, one mistake can be catastrophic as everything rises and falls on the success or failure of the device.

Apple has been responsible for plenty of effective innovation, whether you like them or not. Whereas MS has not innovated much of anything; instead simply being the 100 ton gorilla that arrives late to market and simply employs its massive marketing might - usually by buying a smaller innovator or by simply playing massive catch up - after all, who needs that Internet thing anyway? right????

Its one thing to be a fanboy, its another thing to be able to evaluate concepts without the blinders of brand loyalty.

But yeah, Microsoft just established that Jerry Seinfeld is doing commercials with Bill Gates, they don't make sense, thus people are excited to see what happens next to figure out what on earth Microsoft are doing.

And thus, an audience is established for a serial and thus Microsoft has their own unique ad campaign.

As far as Tim's analysis goes - ballsy of him because he did not look professional in the video (and BN does give the look of a proper journalistic site) and his responses are all over the place (but well spoken) ... part of me was hoping though that his response was supposed to be ironic.

I think "Huh?" sums it up pretty well.

Odd, quirky, asinine, irrelevant.....

Seinfeld isn't funny. Arrogant, smug, self-absorbed...sure, but not funny.

The only thing lacking that would truly augment its non-value is the presence of obnoxious ice queen Julia Louis-Dreyfus...

The commercial's lacking any kind of focus seems to be amazingly appropriate if for nothing else than the fact that it lacks any kind of focus.

Unfortunately, this lack of focus corresponds to a similar problem with Vista and Office. Its big, its fancy, its purty, while it also lacks focus and fails to provide for fundamental needs, information and granular control that should have been provided long ago instead of simply adding features few need or use instead of refining existing issues - sort of the same problem that Office suffers.

So, going with Seinfeld seems appropriate, although not in a way that will benefit MS.

And just like Seinfeld - the focus of the commercial is expensive, overblown, self-absorbed - and ultimately superfluous.

Tim,
I am amazed how you can sit there and bad mouth the Gates-Seinfeld ad while looking like a dork, needing a hair cut. You were constantly adjusting your hair so you could see. That got rather annoying. Get your f**king hair cut before you do another one of those!

Maybe it's like Andy Kaufman funny. When you see it you're just gap jawed and blinking, but a week or two later you grin, shake your head, and realize the joke was on you.

I just don't think Seinfeld is funny without Larry David writing his jokes.

An ad about nothing... Seinfeld was popular in the 90's, and has done little since. Is that what the "nothing" is?

Microsoft needs to come up with better ads than this one. I mean, who wants to hear Bill Gates saying how smart he is?

The show, Seinfeld, was billed as the most entertaining show about nothing.

Is that because it was the worst show about something, evor?

Don't know what's wrong with you guys (probably it's me in fact) but I find this pretty funny (MSFT, no time for close to 8min of Tim...).

Well Vista is all about the frosting so this might not be as much a commercial as a mini documentary. Jerry is not alone as I too am anxiously awaiting the "Ace of Cakes" notebook but with Vista involved it might just look better than it tastes.

It worked. It's got journalists talking about it because its crap.

Even crap adverts work. They usually work best in fact.

Very, very, VERY weak... That agency is getting money for nothing.

Less than pennies to MSFT in the scheme of things. people talk about it, they win, regardless of how well the ads pulls it off.

But yeah, it was difficult to both understand the intended goals of such crap.
