Analysis: Making Up Sony's PlayStation 3 Sales Gap
By Sharon Fisher | Published January 12, 2007, 4:35 PM
In examining the margins between Sony's end-of-2006 sales goals for PlayStation 3 and the actual numbers reported this morning by NPD Group - the accounting for which, Sony told BetaNews today, makes sense if you count those PS3s still on trucks - Parks Associates analyst Michael Cai told BetaNews there could be more serious factors at play...or at work.
There were several factors behind Sony's debacle, said Michael Cai, an analyst with Parks Associates.
First was the price point, especially considering the holiday season when people are buying gifts, Cai said. The people who did buy PlayStation 3s were the core early adopters, but once you get beyond them, price becomes a big factor - especially when it's parents buying consoles for their kids. In fact, he noted, the PS3 didn't even make its numbers in Japan, where the price was cut by 20%.
The second factor was the limited supply at the beginning, and that even when more machines became available, Sony didn't communicate that very well, Cai said.
The third factor was the Nintendo Wii, which got a lot of attention. Even the wrist strap problem served to help promote the machine. "Everyone has to wonder why you need a wrist strap," remarked Cai. "'What are they doing with that thing?'"
A fourth factor was the still booming popularity of the Sony PlayStation 2, which was often sold for $100 bundled with five games, Cai said. "Sony was competing against themselves."
Sony needs to do several things to recover, he advised. First, it needs to communicate with the market that the machine is available. Second, it shouldn't cut the price immediately, because that will increase the perception of failure. Instead, Sony should add value to the product by bundling games and movies with it, he said. Third, Sony needs to market the device to people in their 20s and 30s, who have a job and have their own purchasing power, leveraging social media such as MySpace and YouTube, he said.
Will there be a PlayStation 4? Cai thinks so, but not right away. Gaming machines such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are so powerful, he said, that it's hard to see another machine coming out in five years. The next cycle will probably be more like eight years, he said. In addition, Sony needs to look at what Microsoft is doing with IPTV and turning the Xbox 360 into a set-top box and a living room entertainment center, and look for similar opportunities, perhaps making use of its own content, he said. To do that, Sony needs to create more synergy between its different corporate components.
The upshot is that the 2006 holiday season was a big shot of reality to Sony, Cai said. "Sony is no longer the Sony of four years ago," he said. "Apple is a lot cooler than Sony. They thought because of the PlayStation 1 and the PlayStation 2 that the PlayStation 3 would sell itself, but that's not what happened."

Well the problem is you see, sales figures for the PS3 need to count people who desire to have the console. This is quite fair in that these potential owners (of the worlds most awesomely cool console) need to be counted because they will eventually own the console once production has ramped up. Now you may think that counting potential purchasers is unfair, you might be right but unfortunately this is the way it is and you should accept this. I'm sure you all desire one as well, so I will add all you guys to the total sales. Thanks.

Although from reading your article I'm still getting the impression that the porn industry is having difficulty finding a production line. My bet is on the low diode quantities a while back, productions lines would rather produce real movies before porn if their quantities are limited.

Why I havnt bought a PS3...yet. Well, Rewind about 1.5 years to the release of the PSP. I bought a PSP at launch 2 reasons. 1. I am happy with the ps2. 2. I was looking forrward to a few of the games said to be released just after launch. The game I was wanting most was Gran Turismo Mobile. Back to the present, the game i looked forrward to so much, STILL has not been released. On top of that, There STILL is very little in the way of fun games (i dont want games i played years ago rereleased, i want new fun games). So my PSP has sat lifless for sometime because Sony would rather focus on everything in my portable game system than _GAMES_.
Now about the PS3, I am not falling into this trap again. When I see some games that I want to play, I will buy one and not a second before. It does all these nice things, but in the end if my shiny new game machine doesnt have any interesting/fun games to play, its worthless...

If anything. What's hurting the PS3 Right now is Lack of 1080P Televisions in normal households (meaning, blu-ray is pretty much usless, 720P+Blu-Ray is not a good combo) If you want the pure performance out of the PS3/Blu-Ray you're gonna need a HDTV that can run at 1080P whereas with the 360/HDDVD you only beed a 720P/1080i HDTV for it to look great.
But the biggest thing hurting the PS3 is games. The Majority of the games out for the PS3 are availible for the 360. The few PS3 only games aren't that great unless you're playing Resistance.
Another thing hurting PS3 Sales, only way you can purchase it Online is by purchasing a BUNDLE. I've seen the bundles close to a $1,000, and they include games and accessories most people don't want or don't need.

Sony put too much into this console, and they never dreamed it would be as difficult to produce and distribute a "futuristic" system before the tech becomes more widely available elsewhere. It cost Sony too much for them to ask any less than what they are asking, yet it is simply too much money. $600 is just too dam high, period.
I will say this for Sony: in a year or two, when the cost of production goes down for the PS3, it will likely sell many more consoles and catch up with XBox 360 sales possibly, especially if it goes down to only a couple hundred dollars or so. PS3 price is simply about $200 higher than MOST CONSUMERS are willing to spend on a frikin game console, in my professional opinion.

My PS3 runs a little hotter than advertised, you just have to make sure its not in a rack with a door that closes, same goes for the 360.
The sales of PS3 will continue, but at a much slower rate because the hype is over and they are readily available in stores. The same thing happened to the 360. It will take three or four months to hit the 2 million mark, if in fact they have even sold a million, which I don't think is true just yet.
I am not as anti Blu-Ray as I used to be, I will be buying Cars and Pirates 2, and any other great movies that look and sound good on a true home theater (DLP projector and screen). All I am going to buy is summer blockbuster, eye candy / special effects movies. Watching dialog movies in HD is just crazy.
This stupid format war is just going to hurt both companies, the current sales numbers on Amazon are pretty close for top ten movies. I just dont see regular non tech geek people caring too much about either one, a lot of people still have no clue that there are HD movies and players for sale.

You're missing the point.
Blu-Ray does look good at 720p and/or 1080i... BUT... The PS3 lacks any sort of hardware scaler, so unless your TV can display the disk's native 1080p, it will default everything to 480p. 480p is what current DVDs use! So unless you bought your HDTV recently (I bought mine a year ago) and specifically got a 1080p capable set, you're not getting any better image quality from your Blu-Ray movies and games than you would get from normal DVD (using the PS3 as the player).
Now the Xbox 360, on the other hand, has hardware scaling built in. So, even HD-DVDs encoded at 1080p will be scaled to a standard supported by your TV (1080i, 720p, etc).
I thought about buying the PS3 simply because it is the cheapest Blu-Ray player available. But after doing some research (and not owning a 1080p capable set), I decided it wasn't even worth it for that.
And just so nobody calls me a fan-boy, I will add that I currently own a Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, Wii, Xbox 360 (with HD-DVD add-on), two original DS', a DS Lite and a PSP.
Score: 0
The problem is though is that when you play Blue-Ray movies, unless you have a 1080p TV, the PS3 will automatically scale it to 480p (which is the same as DVD). So that makes it pointless to watch the Blue-Ray version.

But technically 720p and higher is considered Hi-Def, or most of the HDTV's out now that are 720p wouldn't be considered a High Definition TV. "In the USA, "HD Ready" refers to any display that is capable of accepting and displaying a high definition signal at either 720p, 1080i or 1080p using a component video or digital input, and does not have a built-in HD-capable tuner.
[...]
The fact that a product bears the label "HD ready" does not necessarily mean that it can display the full picture resolution possible from a HD source. Most HD-ready sets do not have enough pixels to give true pixel-for-pixel representation without interpolation of the higher HD resolution (1920x1080) - or even the lower HD resolution (1280x720) horizontally (CRT based sets, or the plasma based sets with 1024x768 resolution).
[...]
HD ready requirements
In order to be awarded the label “HD ready” a display device has to cover the following requirements:
1. Display, display engine
- The minimum native resolution of the display (e.g. LCD, PDP) or display engine (e.g. DLP) is 720 physical lines in wide aspect ratio.
2. Video Interfaces
- The display device accepts HD input via:
- Analog YPbPr. “HD ready” displays support analog YPbPr as a HD input format to allow full compatibility with today's HD video sources in the market. Support of the YPbPr signal should be through common industry standard connectors directly on the HD ready display or through an adaptor easily accessible to the consumer; and:
- DVI or HDMI
- HD capable inputs accept the following HD video formats:
1280x720 @ 50 and 60Hz progressive scan (“720p”), and
- 1920x1080 @ 50 and 60Hz interlaced (“1080i”)
The DVI or HDMI input supports copy protection (HDCP)"

Nice twisting of my words there.
twice a week we have a PS3 shipment of somwhere in the region of 160 units, it varies about about 20% (+/-). The split is around 70%/30% for 60GB/20GB
Between the twice weekly shipments, ALL the 60GB models sell, and usually all the 20GB models too. on 2 ocasions since launch have we had a couple of 20GB units stil in stock when the next batch arrives for retail sale.
As a guide, during the run up to the holiday season, we were shifting 20 -30 Xbox360s a week (core and premium), since the holidays that has dropped off to about 15 - 20. As for WII, we are also selling all our WII shipments, but we arn't getting that many, as Nintendo have serious issues keeping up with demand. I suspect PS3 to outsell WII in total numbers, if the limited supply of WII and (almost) unlimited supply of PS3 carries on for much longer.
Anyone that suggests that the PS3 is not selling like hotcakes, either:
1) lives on a different planet (a planet presumably owned by Microsoft)
2) does not understand retail, and the many factors at work (seasonal variations, supply and demand).
3) is fooled by thinking the box he saw on the shelf last week, is the same as the one he saw this week (something I find very unlikely to be true, except in the worst trailer park towns).

Not tha xbox owners need screwing over any more by Microsoft, with the launch of the new console only a year after the original, with HDMI, 120GB HDD, and IPTV, non of which are available on the original...
Seems Betanews seems to have "forgotten" to report this...

It seems like all the Game Stop employees are required to say "the PS3's are flying off the shelves". I went into two different stores and all the employees had there lips on Sony's ass.
We came to find out that there are meetings that tell the employees to push the PS3 and games, even though Game Stop employees were not allowed to buy one at the initial launch, even if they stood in line on their own time.
Best Buy does the same thing with Blu-Ray. This is why I hate Sony and their strong arm tactics. The good news is, the more consoles they sell, the more money they lose.
I look everywhere I go, everybody has PS3's. Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Toys R Us, Frys, etc.... the high demand is gone.

And yet Nintendo is clearly selling more Wiis than Sony is selling PS3s. Perhaps your store is the only Sony outlet to be doing well?
And you know what they say about assumptions: the mother of all f$#%-ups.

I think Steve is Gillespies brother. He is the new "I can't say one thing positive about the 360" fanboy always kissing Sony's ass. What is with you people, none of the Sony fanboys even own a PS3 or BD player, but you come in here bashing the 360.
Support your stupid brand or **** off.

Yeah Kieth,
Lexus just released a new model with a feature that let's the car park itself, screwing over last years customers who bought an older version.
Why improve the car at all?
It would be different if it was only a couple months later but a year? I just bought a 360 without the bigger hard drive and HDMI but do you hear me complaining?
I'll just give it away and buy the new one as soon as it comes out. Idiots like you complain when you are stuck with a slightly older model. Did you b**** when GM replaced your stripped 2004 Cavalier with a better looking car called Cobalt in 2005? Those bas****s!
Buy a PS3 or go away. Even you think it's too expensive.

The diference being, that all the other consoles are the same for the product lifespan. I am glad I waited for the PS3, as I would be really gutted to find that last years console was the "test" version...

I beg to differ. The original PS2 didn't have network support built into it, it had to wait for the smaller version to get that. It was an add on .

Where do you live that these things are so popular?
PS3s are collecting dust on the shelves at all the BestBuy and Target stores I have visited in Atlanta.

Listen to Hollywood, Keith Tard, I mean Lard. Do you feel ripped off with the brand new Dell or HP computer you bought last year when they came out with something better, faster, and more stuff for cheaper than what you paid?
Screwed over? I think not!
Why don't you b**** about PS2 available in Slim when you got the PS2 FAT? Did you get screwed? How about the Apple's iPod with the millionioth refresh or Nintendo's Gameboy with the billion variations that come out yearly?
I think you should wait until next year and get the PS3 Slim or the PS4.

What are people to do with a PS3/20G without wireless networking or memory card readers? Are the owners of the PS3/20G screwed?
Didn't they remove the firewire ports from the PS2Slim?
What are people to do with their PS2 Hard Drive on the PS2 Slim?

Play games.
You don't need networking, wireless or otherwise, to play Burnout 3, Guitar Hero, or damn near any other game out there.
Sure, it's an option, but I do my multi-player gaming on a PC which is infinitely more capable in that arena.

firewire and HDD were hardly ever used on PS2, hence they were removed.
As far as I can recally, Gran Turismo (3??) you could iLink consoles, GT4 allowed network play instead. As for the HDD, only Final Fantasy (6?)..

You miss the CRUCIAL point. You can buy a network adapter for the PS2, infact the adapter was available long before the slim PS2 came with it built in.
Microsoft have basically shut the door on existing users, with no upgrade route for HDMI or IPTV. The 120GB may be available to purchase as a upgrade from Microsoft however for $200.

steve17 makes a valid point. While I don't know the precise sales figures over the past 3 months, it doesn't matter how many systems are on the shelves. Be it the Wii, 360, or PS3, it all comes down to sales. Even if the sales include units that are sitting on the retail store shelves. If the PS3 truly isn't selling, retail outlets will discontinue ordering such large amounts in order to balance out supply and demand. As it sits, I believe the Wii is the hottest item out there, in both sales and hype (In that so many people are interested in them) as opposed to the PS3, which needs, as so many of you have already posted, a killer app. Something for us to really want to play that is exclusive to the PS3. It hasn't arrived yet, and you can bet interest for the system will remain low until such a title is released, be it MGS4, or a surprise hit like the original Halo.
The Wii has innovation.
The 360 has over a year's worth of titles and developer experience.
The PS3 has a few paltry launch games that don't utilize it's potential, and Blu Ray simply hasn't hit the mainstream enough to have a noticeable influence on the decision to purchase it. (I'm referring to mainstream buyers, young teenagers, families, etc.)
Sony did not market this system to the typical gaming crowds, being families and younger teens. They designed it to be a part of a high def entertainment center, and in that respects it's pretty much the cheapest component at $600, if you compare it to decent quality Home Theatre TV's and Speaker systems. However the people that would invest in such a setup are also fairly tech savvy, and aren't going to a buy a system that doesn't have any real eye catching games. Again, I'll clarify that this is at present.
It will change with time, as these systems always do. But for right now, the PS3 is waiting on the runway for clearance to take off, and all it needs is one or two amazing games to take it to that point.
Sony better do all it can to keep MGS4 ONLY on the PS3, because I truly think that title alone could help turn everything around, regardless of what happens in terms of sales in the next 6-10 months.
