Apple Debuts Wireless Mighty Mouse

By Ed Oswald | Published July 25, 2006, 12:28 PM

A day after word of the product leaked to the press, Apple on Tuesday said it was launching a Bluetooth wireless version of its Mighty Mouse product, the two-button mouse made by the company. The new mouse comes with an upgraded laser tracking device that the company claims is some 20 times more sensitive than regular optical mice.

"We cut the cord on our popular Mighty Mouse to give consumers even more flexibility when using a Mac," Apple Mac marketing manager David Moody said.

While the device is intended to be a two-button mouse, it can be customized to operate as a one-button mouse based on the user's preference. Although it appears to operate as Apple's standard mouse by appearance, clicking on the sides of the mouse will cause it to act like it has two buttons. Additionally, the sides and trackball can also be programmed to act as two more buttons to quick launch applications.

The mouse will operate on two 'AA' batteries, and will include an on/off switch to conserve battery power. Apple has also included power management features in the device which will switch the mouse to low-power mode during periods of inactivity if it is left on.

The Mighty Mouse retails for US $69, and is available immediately from Apple's online store and retail locations, as well as the company's authorized resellers. The device requires Mac OS X 10.4.6 to program the extra buttons, although the mouse should work on older Macs for standard use.

Really, I don't understand what you are talking about. Apple created this mouse because they will sell millions of them. Like notebooks and ipods... It's simple! And everybody will love it.
Of course that always will be a few freakies who prefer a mouse with 20 buttons and for that reasons there are some other brands who develop this kind of 'tools'.

PC lovers will always be in the PC side until they try a mac... (Hopefully that happened to me...)

From my point of view the same happens if you compare the last version of a CASIO watch with a Classic TAG Heuer. Or a Full equipped Renault Clio with a standard MINI Coomper S.

This is my point of view...

Alfredo.

I love all these comments about how the Mac is getting a second button. Apple has been supporting multiple button mice for years. Go ahead and take your MS mouse and plug it in.

Nice to see Apple finally caving in and making a normal mouse. I guess they've finally been forced to admit that their user interface skills aren't as good as they used to be.

Wow, that's amazing, a two button mouse; it only took Apple 3 decades. That's almost as impressive as the Chinese orbiting the earth in that 60's technology space capsule 4 decades later. But PC’s must stay one button ahead of Apple. Now where’s that 11 button mouse???

I have had a Logitech Laser (not optical) mouse for years now( 2000 Dpi) .. It even has a weighting system with small weights in it - which is really great. How is this new? Because Apple has one now? LOL - behind the times guys - Oh and the 2 button style - makes so so much more sexier - LOL

What the hell are you supposed to do with two mouse buttons? This is just over kill by Apple. Just like their laptops have to be twice as hot as everyone else's, their mice have to have twice as many buttons.

And, I didn't even realise you could get mice for Macs. I've just been using the foot pedal controller that it came with

Did the battery industry invent wireless or was it Hedy Lamarr? Seems like the only good thing wireless does is eat batteries by the box load.

Oh, and Apple is truly funny. "Hey Zaine come here, look at my cool new retro mouse!" Oy.

That's an odd statement. My MS wireless mouse eats maybe 4 AA batteries per year.

Yeah, ditto. I think I've put new batteries in my MS mouse once in the last 1.5 years. I'm actually very surprised that it lasts as long as it does... pretty cool.

Why doesn't Apple use a rechargeable lithium battery? For some reason certain companies (namely MS so far) act like rechargeable batteries in wireless mice are the worst idea ever created. MS even has a statement on many of their boxes for their wireless mice that says something like "Our mice use standard AA batteries so there's no need for a charging station." I think Logitech is the only company that knows what they are doing when it comes to designing mice.

Score: 0

|

It's a fact that lithium-ion rechargeable batteries don't last as long as standard alkalines do (per charge of course). Also, they're heavier and more expensive.

I think, with how little power the mouse uses, it would actually be more expensive to have rechargeable batteries. ...especially if you chuck the mouse out next year for an upgrade.

Depends on how long you plan on keeping it, I guess.

Score: 0

|

That's true that rechargeable mice might cost more, but wouldn't Energizer Lithium AA batteries last far longer than Alkaline AA batteries in mice that use disposeable batteries?

You said "rechargeable lithium" batteries.

That's what I responded to.

Whether it's 4 AA batteries per year or "only" 2, that's still two more batteries going to waste, depositing acid on our earth, which eventually leaks into the ground, and pollutes the ground and water.

Thanks Apple!

How much better are the means for producing AC power? It all comes from some place. Quibbling over it seems a tad silly to me.

Score: 0

My point is that if disposeable AA lithium batteries can last as long as a single charge on a rechargeable lithium battery, which is far longer than a pair of AA alkaline batteries, then why not use rechargeable batteries instead of disposeable batteries?
