Apple Fixes MacBook Shutdown Issues

By the Betanews Staff | Published October 27, 2006, 3:10 PM

Apple has released a firmware update for its popular MacBook line of laptops, which it says fixes an issue that causes the systems to shut down unexpectedly. The company is advising that all owners install the patch, even if they have sent in their units for repair. The problem was first discovered in August, following at least two other issues including overheating and case discoloration in some units.

"The SMC Update improves the MacBook's internal monitoring system and addresses issues with unexpected shutdowns," Apple said in a notice describing the update. Although the exact number of laptops affected is unknown, a site, macbookrandomshutdown.com, was started shortly after the problem was discovered and has since grown to over 1,500 members.

So many non-Mac users concerned about A bug that doesn't pertain to their machine.
...Must be the years of conditioning with Windows.

But I'm curious, how do the Windows users find the time to worry about anything else other then their own robust refined platform? Its not a question of "If", but rather of "How many" Windows related fixed have been issued today already?

Ummm... how many of the (currently) 11 comments on here are from non-Mac users criticizing the platform?

Seriously, do you see any?

I don't.

OMG, dude reading your comments in betanews have given me one BIG reason not to buy MAC.
Not that there is anything wrong with it other than price .
But i dont want to get soo obsessed with a err................computer.
So if you are a true fanboy and dont want to do harm to apple then please dont act that obsessed.
Just repeat following ten times when it gets too hard.
MAC is just a machine & silicon inside it is rugged.

MANY Mac users are, errr..., "very passionate" about their Macs. That's why it's called a cult. It's all part of Apple's successful marketing strategy.

He assumes if you point out the flaws with Macs you must not be a Mac user. Only members of the cult are mac users; therefore, you can't be insulting a mac if you use one, so you must be a Windows user.
Never mind that he fails to see the appropriateness of discussing flaws with Macs in a thread for an article about a flaw with Macs.

I wouldn't let his comments sway your decision that much. Macs are not bad machines, actually comparable to mid to high-end "PC"s, and recently have become comparably priced; however, they may be a little more finicky about the hardware you can upgrade with. My main reason for not considering one is the misleading and condescending tactics Apple has used in its marketing for years. I do not want to contribute financially to a company like that, nor do I want to support the elitist mentality of many of its customers.

Thats just the closed minded attitude I always find from Windows users. Always so concerened about slandering other OS's... It must be fun leading such a frustrating life?

it's a pretty tiny problem

apple is projected to sell over a million macbooks (not including pros) in 2006. 1500 people (presumably unique) have been counted on the rss site. that's .15%

even if you guess that apple has sold, say 750,000 macbooks to date, and just 1/4 of people with problems report it ( = 6000 problems), that's just .80%.

I'm not sure of any complex electronic devices which are 100% fault free; but 99.20% is pretty good ( and yes, this excludes any other problems)

I am a macbook owner... wasnt this "fixed" awhile back? or was that the over heating issue

Because I think it's quite appropriate:

"As you might imagine, we are upset at Apple for not being more hardy against such issues, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it." Apple said.
