Apple: Leopard Will Ship on Time

By Ed Oswald | Published March 26, 2007, 1:29 PM

It seems as if Apple is determined to not take a similar route as Windows Vista with its next-generation operating system, code-named "Leopard."

The company took the unusual step on Friday of responding directly to speculation by the Taiwan technology publication DigiTimes that its newest operating system was delayed, saying it was on track to deliver Leopard in the spring.

Normally, Apple declines to comment on speculation surrounding its products. However, it told JupiterResearch analyst Michael Gartenberg Friday that DigiTimes' report was incorrect.

"The rumor mill is wrong again," Gartenberg mused. The paper had claimed the delay was caused by a desire by Apple to enhance the dual-boot support within Mac OS X. However, the publication has often been wrong in speculating about the Cupertino company's future moves.

American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu also downplayed the report, saying his checks showed that Leopard was nearing completion, and should be released in the spring, or during the company's June quarter.

"Our sources indicate that Apple's latest beta build has made noticeable improvements in stability and functionality from previous builds, and that Apple is likely one or two upcoming builds away from reaching 'final candidate' stage to be released for manufacturing," AppleInsider reported him as saying.

Wu expressed concern however on the so-called "top secret" features within Leopard, saying the company should soon publish them so they could be adequately beta tested before release.

So I'm sitting here (as I do every workday) with a Windows box, a Linux box, and a Mac box, all part of my work (software development)

Overall, I find that the Mac the best - and I further claim that my day-to-day experience (for years) with all three environment gives me the right to make that claim without having to be seen or viewed as a fanatic. (I've justified my arguments for this claim in the past and won't bore anyone here).

In other words, I think people need to stop assuming that just because someone is arguing in favor of a particular environment, it doesn't mean that they have religious (i.e, non-rational) reasons for it, i.e, they learn!

--->preach on, the truth will ... I was going to say, set them free .. but Applefanboys never learn.

I'm not an Apple user. I've never been able to afford it. But it doesn't take a genius to realize that if your operating system is proprietary and you control the hardware on which it runs in addition to not having to deal with "backwards compatability" issues, you're going to have a better, more stable product. The fact that Vista is offering features that Apple has had for some time is symptomatic of that. Having said that, the reason M$ has the market share they do and will continue to dominate the market is that Windows will operate on a variety of platforms and usually supports that old program (or two or three) that I can't dispense with or justify the cost for a replacement. The discussion of which platform is better is irrelevant. Of course, Mac is better. Am I going to buy one? No.

Genius, the Mac is simply the latest incarnation of the 'Intel Roadmap'. They do not "control the hardware they run on." You can run OSX on a standard PC assuming the proper late generation chipsets are supported and that you update the BIOS to Intel's EFI. Oh....but...

Your ignorance is symptomatic of a greater problem. Ignorance bordering on stupidity. And its not like this info hasn't been easily available for a long time.

And you need not spend more money for a Mac then for a PC.

All you have left out of the 20 year old rant is that the Mac in 'incompatible' as they choose to go with the obtuse technology in 1993 open standard called "TCP/IP" rather than a proprietary NetBios. Yup, them Apples are just some seriously nefarious computers.

But thats the nice thing, if you don't want additional choices, you Don't have to buy it.
But in the mean time, get your head out of your @ss.

Same damn thing. You can run OSX on hardware they've chosen to support. The exact opposite of Microsoft. They don't get to choose what companies, chipsets, or techs they support, and failure of 3rd party devs to create drivers (or software...or hardware) get's blamed on them anyway.

Point still stands. Mac is stable, due in a large part, to the limited scope of hardware supported.

...update your BIOS to EFI. Seriously...

Reason:

Apple quote their release dates as miles off in the future so that there is ****ing ages before they have to ship anything (they nobbed this up with the AppleTV).

Internal release dates differ drastically to those the public are told about.

Take the '2 year transition to Intel'.

They had OSX running on Intel chips from 2002 or possibly earlier.

Stick some chips in a new motherboard during those 3 years of planning, mass produce them.

There was no way it was going to take 2 years.

I can see why under-promising and over delivering would be a problem for many...

Especially as MS has a pattern of making an announcement years in advance of even having a clue as to what they will do.

The reason that people dont think Vista is a worthy upgrade is because...surprise, surprise... it ISNT a worthy OS, and that has been demonstrated on every independent review site. You cannot cite Microsoft's own funded surveys, because you would just be falling for their advertising again.

"but i know betanews and cnet and others will all give high ratings to this "new" OS and beg people to buy it"
I don't see anyone begging anyone to buy leopard. And people buy OSX because it works for them. People have their OS preference, and if you do not like someone else's preference, then be respectful and just don't buy it. That simple. You don't have to be an azzhole about it. You are just furthering the close minded PC stereotype. Way to go.
