Apple Patches QuickTime Yet Again

By the Betanews Staff | Published May 1, 2007, 6:38 PM

For the third time this year, Apple has released a security update for its QuickTime media player, which corrects a flaw that could lead to code execution. The vulnerability was discovered as part of a "Hack a Mac" contest at the CanSecWest security conference earlier this month.

According to Apple, a problem exists in QuickTime for Java that allows reading or writing out of the bounds of the allocated heap. As a result, a malicious Java applet on a Web site could result in a full system compromise. QuickTime 7.1.6 resolves the issue, and is available for both Windows and Mac OS X.

Simply use Quicktime Alternative if you need to view Quicktime media, it doesn't crap on your desktop and such.

Since it was also mentioned, a good alternative to that bloated Adobe Reader crap is Foxit Reader:

The update:
-Places it's icon on your desktop even if you've removed it.
- Places an icon on your taskbar.
- Resets some associations.

I was going to mention something about this. I'm tired of this crap from the quicktimes and acrobat readers of the world.
By default:
-Do not place any crap in my taskbar tool tray!
-Do not put anything in the root of my start menu!
-There's no need to put anything in the startup folder of the start menu or the registry, so stay away you F-ers!
-Do not put any stupid icon on my desktop!
-Do not change my associations. Ask me in the custom installation option.
-Ask me what folder on my hard drive to install your crap!
-Ask me where in the start menu to install the folder with your crap, and include an uninstaller!

I must have missed something....when did betanews become so anti-apple? I mean I just got my first apple a few months ago, but I don't recall their ever being so much hostility towards apple on BN.

and Das mod: FYI, try comparing how easy it is to break into an apple box remotely (with no physical access to the system) to how easy it is to break into a windows box remotely. That smirk on your face will wipe itself off when you find out someone's been using your windows box as part of a botnet or something.

"I must have missed something....when did betanews become so anti-apple?"

Sorry I don't see this as being anti-apple, to me it looks like a simple story reporting the facts.

I think we are being a little too precious about our apples here.

The bug relates to a piece of software which can be found on a PC or MAC, given that it is a extremely common piece of software it is a valid story because this flaw could have impact on millions of computers.

This was the first I heard about so thank you for bringing it to my attention betanews.

It may affect both pcs (read macs are the same now except for a bios setting)but its an apple product not microsoft and not linux.

I'd say BN is the most balanced when it comes to speaking of products as everywhere else is clearly anti microsoft (cnet, slashdot. fark)

Add that article to the comments most people give on BN about apple compared to other (more impartial) sites, it really seems like BN or its users are starting to hate Apple. That's why I sy I notice a sort of anti-Apple trend on this site.

The logic of the Winboys is flawless!

After all, since the Toyota Corolla out sells them, I guess 'they' are anti-BMW and anti-Mercedes and anti-Lexus and anti-Saab, too.

Yup, wouldn't want a Porsche GT3 or a BMW M3/5! After all, the Corolla outsells it! The Corolla MUST be better.

Swooft...

So if I should make my choice of vehicle, in light of my needs which might be having to pull a boat or carrying heavy supplies rendering it prudent for me to have a truck, based upon my neighbor whose single leading concern is the transport of a girls soccer team in their getting a minivan.

But gee there are more folks hauling kids than those without kids hauling boats. Of course the minivan is superior! And by the Winboy's illogic, EVERYONE should have a minivan. After all, market share determines what is best and most appropriate for everyone!

With logic like that, no wonder they are so enamored with such a mediocre, but widely used, platform.

Score: 0

Mediocre? you must be talking about Apple products as well - they don't put out anything any better or worse than anyone else - commercial computer products designed for consumers are all built/designed/created as cheap as possible, resulting in nothing but mediocrity.

I don't think I understand your logic here

"After all, since the Toyota Corolla out sells them, I guess 'they' are anti-BMW and anti-Mercedes and anti-Lexus and anti-Saab, too."

First thing's first...you seem to be unaware of price, so lets clear that up real quick:

Corolla: 14k?
BMW: 45-80k?
Mercedes: 45k-120?

PC: 1-2k?
Mac: 1.5-2.5k?

So the difference between a corolla and a BMW is about what...50 thousand dollars? The difference between a pc and a mac is what...500 dollars at most??

The problem with your logic is...if you can afford a PC you can probably afford a mac...if you're looking at a corolla, chances are you can't afford a BMW.

"Yup, wouldn't want a Porsche GT3 or a BMW M3/5! After all, the Corolla outsells it! The Corolla MUST be better. "

No...it's MUCH cheaper tho'...

you actually based your entire post based on your completely flawed logic, so there's really no need to go on quoting your rediculous comments.

Are you dense? They are not even close to the same price. The comparison (as with most car analogies) fails. Not the same market.

You, however, have claimed many times that the MAc\C and windows boxes are. You claim they can do the same things, perform the same functions. You claim prices are about equal.

if you're going to try to rail against the numbers, fine, but at least try to stick to something a tad more reasonable.

How can anyone argue with you about this? You claim one thing one day, and the next use the exact opposite to argue some more.

You are making an illogical comparison.

Mac and Windows both make similar software, so therefore comparing 2 dissimilar products ( truck to minivan ) is incorrect.

It would be like comparing iTunes to MS Office.

So rething your argument, then argue with a valid point.
