Apple Pulls Boot Camp, Leopard Leaks
By the Betanews Staff | Published October 24, 2007, 11:08 AM
Although Mac OS X version 10.5, known as "Leopard," won't pounce into retail stores until Friday at 6pm, a purported final copy of the new operating system is already making the rounds on the Internet. Windows Vista leaked out before its launch as well, but there is one key distinction in that Leopard includes no activation requirements or other anti-piracy restrictions. Mac enthusiast sites are using the leak to prepare early reviews of Leopard.
In preparation for Leopard's launch, Apple has pulled the beta version of Boot Camp, which allows owners of Intel Macs to install Windows and dual-boot between the operating systems. It's unlikely that Apple will provide further updates to Tiger owners, instead encouraging them to spend $129 on the upgrade to Leopard, which ships with Boot Camp built in.
The only problem with this approaxh is that Apple was heavily advertising their IMac for a sales push and now those folks have to shell out more money to upgrade. Also, Leopard was suppose to come out months ago but kept being delayed as Apple milked the market with their high price phone and sily new Ipod and then set people up to but the Imac and the have to pay more.

|I am sure by updates for tiger they mean bug fixes, I would think it would be unethical to not provide security fixes to a os that most mac users will be running, at least for the next few years anyway.
AS for it being on p2p pirated, that is a given. A popular os like this with no activation features is a prime target. However thanks to it only being able to run on apple's computers that does assure that apple gets money at least in some respects.
Now if this was an os that competes with vista on oem computers from multiple vendors this woudl be a much bigger thing.
I think its almost safe to say we would see a huge increase in market share for apple if they released it on the regular pc. I would use it, simply because I enjoy building my own. This is one thing I belive has kept apple at such a low market share. The fact they keep on building their own computers and don't allow the os to be bought and used on our own systems, now that its on Intel hardware, I really don't see the reason for it.
As for bootcamp beta being pulled, why would you keep a beta up if the final version is released? You get it as part of the new os which I would assume a lot of mac users will be buying anyway. I know if I had a mac I would.

|this is a common practice for OS companies... MS does this too. remember MS defender? Or Virtual PC. Or how about MCE? Basically those were tested on XP and windows 2000 and then once Vista came out it became almost impossible to get them again on XP. Without hacking out the OS version limitations I should say...
Apples been notorious for doing this on a greater scale in the past. so its not too big a surprise.

Virtual PC
The Virtual PC application requires a 400 MHz Pentium-compatible processor (1.0 GHz or faster recommended), and requires approximately 20 MB of disk space. It runs on Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.
MS Defender
nimum system requirements for Windows Defender:
•
Personal computer with an Intel Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) or higher processor; Pentium III recommended.
•
Operating system: Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later.
•
64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (minimum); 128 MB RAM (recommended).
•
20 MB of available hard disk space.
•
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later.
•
Internet access with at least a 28.8 Kbps connection.
•
Windows Installer version 3.1 or higher. Visit the Microsoft Download Center to download the installer.
MCE was originally a separate OS, but MS decided that Vista should have it as well.
All your points have nothing to do with what Apple is doing.
Apple will not update it anymore and if you had to reformat you wouldn't be able to reinstall it unless you saved it to disk.

|I never understood why media center edition was considered its own version of os. I mean its just the application media center which is run from the xp. I personally never use it and if it wasn't for the fancy effects in home premium of vista I could of done without.
As for virtual pc, I think virtualbox is much nicer and also runs on mac.
As for this news story I have no doubt this happens all the time. Unlike microsoft though I think a lot of people are happy to dish out the reasonable 125 dollar price tag for such a good os, that actually does a good job of competition with vista feature for feature. Not to mention no activation which is always appreciated.
I never understood why a company which has always made a rediculous amount of money and keeps on growing would need to go to such lengths to have activation. I mean it seems to hurt people that are legit more then it hurts those who are not. Anyone can get around it with a 5 min google search.

$129 for a feature packed OS, which will be cloned by M$ in Windoze 2020 or whenever they release their next pile of bugware. LOL. Window 2020 Ultimate Super Bestest Version will only set you back $599 a copy! LMAO. But we will sell you a crippled version for $199.
Oh and btw, you can only install it on one PC. LMAO. Who in their right mind would pay M$ for that turd Vista?
The thing does not even work unless you have a supercomputer with the latest 3D card and at least 2GB of RAM. And even then, its performance stinks. No thanks M$....keep your DRM infested OS with its network card slowing crap to yourself. A real OS, Leopard, is here.

|What you fail to understand over and over, is you can buy an oem version of ultimate for $179, that is typically what most people that wish to upgrade their OS.
The majority though will buy it with their computer.
Apple wants to charge its users to pay for a new OS every 12-18 months. (In case you can't add that would equate to 3 new OS within the MS timeline, so basically you would be paying the same amt for a retail box of vista ultimate)
All the issues you have listed have been fixed as well or will be in sp1, I am sure Leopard will have no problems and be perfect in everyway...keep dreaming...
The DRM is only to play CONTENT that REQUIRES it, it does not lock your files, nor does it prevent you from watching illegal movies, music or games.

El Dingo's Tip's on Trolling:
#4 Why use logic, critical thinking, or hell, even actual facts, when rhetoric and emotional pandering will do the trick?
#216 When the truth doesn't fit your agenda; Lie, lie, and lie some more. (throw in a few prophecies if you can)
#623 When all else fails, post, "perhaps you should actually use it before bashing it"...even if you didn't. That always shuts up those who are smarter and more knowledgeable than you (Read: everyone else in the forum).

Boot Camp itself is worth the $129, at least to me.
That said, you can buy a 5 PC license of OS X 10.5 for $199 total.
That is a good value.

Have not upgraded to Parallels 3 yet - just version 2 - works for me for now. Maybe I'll upgrade to 3 later.
