Arriving a week later than many had expected, Apple on Tuesday unveiled the MacBook, intended to replace both the iBook line and 12-inch PowerBook. The release completes Apple's laptop transition to Intel processors.
The MacBook comes with an Intel Core Duo processor running at either 1.83 GHz or 2.0 GHz and 13-inch widescreen display. With the update to Intel processors, Apple said the new models are up to five times faster than their predecessors.
Like the MacBook Pros, the entry-level portables will also include a built-in iSight video camera and Front Row with Apple Remote. Also included are DVI output with dual display support, a sudden motion sensor to protect the hard drive, and a TrackPad and MagSafe Power Adapter.
Built-in Ethernet and Wireless-G networking will also be included, along with Bluetooth capability. Each unit will also ship with one Firewire 400 and 2 USB 2.0 ports as well.
"The complete MacBook lineup leads the industry with Apple's trademark innovative design and advanced mobile features -- from top to bottom it is the best notebook line that we have ever offered," Apple senior marketing vice president Philip Schiller said in a statement.
Apple will also offer the customer a choice of either black or white casing, much like it did for the iPod. The MacBook is also some 20 percent thinner than the iBook at a thickness of about one inch.
The 1.83GHz MacBook model will retail for $1,099 USD, while the 2.0GHz model would retail for $1,299 USD. Apple said that with the MacBook's release, the speeds of the MacBook Pros would be increased as well. The $2,499 USD model will ship with a 2.16 GHz processor, up from 2.0 GHz, and the $1,999 USD model now includes a 2.0 GHz processor, up from 1.83 GHz.
All new MacBooks will begin shipping immediately from both Apple's online store and its retail locations, as well as through its authorized resellers.
Macs are great but yeah I have to agree with SorenMD.

because they dont want the same thing to happen to their expensive 1000 dollar laptop line as happened with their less expensive 200 dollar ipod nano line...
b****y people complaining about scratches on the finish. wise move although they probably could have gone MORE black than that...
like the pebl or the razr...

I am wondering my comment will be the 1st, so better make a good one =)
I think many folks been waiting on this one, me too. Apple is making a nice books, but with one particular problem in Europe, thus in Slovakia here. They are insanely priced.
I mean, I would take Macbook immediately been it priced 1100 USD like advertised. But looking at prices of MacBook Pro this 1100 USD will be incresed to 1300 EUR meaning around 1600 USD+.
And that is a main problem. Times when only few companies were doing a quality stuff are long gone, at at least in Europe I can pick MUCH better book at European price from HP(my favs notebook company) to IBM/lenovo or ASUS.
Apple, make a BASE in Europe.
