Apple iPhone to Go on Sale June 29

Apple confirmed the launch date of its highly-anticipated foray into the mobile handset market in a Sunday night television ad: the iPhone is coming Friday, June 29. That doesn't mean the device will be easy to obtain, however, as Cingular customers are expected to line up in droves for the $599 USD phone.
While Apple has yet to prove itself in the mobile space and the iPhone lacks now-key smartphone features like a QWERTY keyboard and 3G capability, the company has built an innovative touch screen user interface that has iPod and Mac fans clamoring to be early adopters. Cingular has a multi-year exclusive deal with Apple, which means customers from other wireless carriers are out of luck for the time being.
I would like to purchase an iPhone.
Can I connect my iPhone with my big TV, and enjoy movies on TV?
I would like to convert DVDs, movies to iPhone with the software http://www.dvdtoiphone.net/ and put onto my iPhone as soon as I get it on June 29.

|Wow so now that Apple has successfully catered to the rich population of America. When is some one gonna make a cool phone for me?
I'm sure all the paris hilton wannabe kids will enjoy their new phone

Meanwhile i can get a Nintendo Wii, Pay gas, water, and power bill and still afford a treo 650 with a better cell phone service.

|It's too bad their service still sucks and their customer service is something like being in hell.
I wish they were a better service provider locally, because after a couple iterations of this phone I'd probably be apt to getting one, but not with that low of GB and definitely not with something that I'm sure is still going to be buggy at first.

|The sheep will be lining up to be paying the same amount as a PS3 costs just so they can be noticed with an iPhone.
I have an excellent phone with Windows Mobile, internet browser and MP3 player, it's called the Blackjack. And they are down to $49.00. The iPhone is the new "look at me" device for the people with low self esteem who need to make strangers think they're cool.
Like DaveBG, except he can't afford the phone. I bet he would walk around with the fake plastic one they use for the demo, pretending to have a conversation with a hot woman.
I'll kick the first guy in the balls I see with an iPhone.

|I agree that this really seems silly. Unless Apple reduces the price, sells the model to other carriers, introduces a CDMA version, and integrates EV-DO/HSDPA the iPhone will never become too popular. The sales will likely start strong but fall off after most of the acolytes buy their units. Between the initial purchase price of the phone and the unlimited data plan you are looking at a cost of over $1000 for the first year.
Score: 0
|Data charges are going to be the killer here. The iPhone is going to be most attractive to students. Most students are under a family plan--their parents are accustomed to playing $10 extra for their phone (and probably some text messaging charges). They'll be in for quite a shock when they find a smartphone data charge runs up $40/month PER PHONE. For our 3 iPhone-wishers at home, that's $120/month (not counting voice). I'll pay almost DOUBLE in data charges (not even counting voice) over the 2yr contract than I will on the phone. My suspicion is that it will be popular for a month or two, until parents realize how crazy the data charges on a multi-phone plan are--and they'll either force AT&T into discounting data on multi-line accounts or they'll see popularity fall to something that both Apple and AT&T will find disappointing.
Score: 0
|AT&T has different types of data plans, many of which are under $40. They have not made any announcements yet as to which current data plans will work with the iPhone. There may even be a special data plan just for the iPhone. Unless you work for AT&T and have some inside info, you have no basis at this time for stating which data plan will be required or what the price of that plan will be. If it does use the SmartPhone Connect plan, that plan only costs $19.99 per month for unlimited data.

|that is the closest plan to what an 'iphone' plan will be it will fall between that and the unl blackberry personal 29.99 plan so not the 40 that people make it out to be. The main attraction to this phone isn't the internet or data usage at all, if it were it would be a 3g phone. this phone is geared more towards kids who wanted a ipod video and a cell phone and parents find it cheaper to purchase the two as one.

I dunno if I should laugh or cry at that.

|Hmm... You could get either a 30gb ipod or a 8gb iPod nano for $250 and the vast majority of phones are availabe for less than $100 with a contract. Unless junior wants a Blackberry, a Treo, or something similar it is unlikely that you could spend anywhere near $600.
While data usage may not be the best use for the iPhone there will be a lot early adopters that will buy it for that. By putting Safari on the iPhone they are trying to target people who want a portable web browsing experience but their product will be too slow to really satisfy that need. EDGE doesn't provide adequate speed to browse most web site at any reasonable speed. To make matters worse the price service will be a lot of higher than what those people are paying for voice services. I don't see how dlab21 sees the $29 blackberry personal plan is an appropriate price point. That plan is just for email. People are going to want to do more than just that and price will be higher accordingly. The closest device in Cingular's line would be the 8125 which would use the PDA connect plan which run $40 for unlimited usage.
So who is this targeted towards again?
Score: 0
|I really doubt the iPhone will use the smartphone plans. If you look at their plan details the only current model that uses that plan is the 3125 which is nothing like the iPhone. The data plans under $40 aren't very useful because they are so limited. When many web pages exceed 100kb it doesn't take very long to go over even on the 20MB plan. At .5 cents per kilobyte any overage could get expensive very quickly. Going over by even 1MB would largely eliminate your savings for that month. Usage with any frequency under anything but the unlimited plan could easily get you a phone in the hundreds of dollars. I remember when I work for a third party Cingular dealer we had a customer that brought in a $1200 phone bill because somebody screwed up and didn't give him the unlimited data plan.

|that 29.99 blackberry is not designed for corporate email. I work for cingular /at&t and that plan has unlimited data and 10 personal emails, it in no way incorporates enterprising email (thats a work email address being pushed to your device). its 34.99 but w/ voice plan 29.99 a month for the data.
I'll repeat this phone its targeted to pda using business customers because far too many of them are loyal to their blackberrys or even if they have a treo they have blackberry connect plans for the features. Yea its for early adopters apple fanboys and teens that want a flashy phone, as a pda this device is not worth its price point. But the data plan wont be $40 a month.
oh and the overages for any data plan if not unlimted are 0.0195/kb not 0.05/kb

|People need to keep in mind that this is a first gen phone for Apple, and while it's features are there, the refinements will come in the 2nd and 3rd gens as people give their feedback on the device, and the requests for features... the phone itself is awesome, and I even want one myself, but the $600 pricetag is a little steep, but all in all, I'd be happy to give it a go. =)

I am eager to play with this phone when it gets in stores, I think just like the ipod it will put apple into yet another area and they are going to blow the competition away. I look forward to a simpler phone though say half the price and take away some features?
