Apple issues security updates to QuickTime, iPhoto

By the Betanews Staff | Published February 8, 2008, 4:45 PM

Apple quietly pushed out a new 7.4.1 QuickTime update to stop attacks through maliciously crafted Web sites.

Apple released the patch because malicious users had the ability to entice "a user to visit a maliciously crafted Web page, [where] an attacker may cause an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution."

Also on the same day as the QuickTime fix, Apple also released a patch for its iPhoto '08 7.1 software. Attackers were reportedly able to cause an arbitrary code execution every time users tried to subscribe to an infected user's photocast stream.

The iPhoto update is for Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.9, Mac OS X v10.5 or later, and Microsoft Windows XP SP 2 and Vista users.

I can't believe the way you all complain about Mac VS MS updates... like either one of these platforms is 100% error free. I run XP2 on VMWare fusion, and I did a fresh install last week... Windows Update downloaded 130+ updates (in a series of many reboots). OSX 10.5 -> 10.5.1 -> 10.5.2 includes fixes that number in the 100's as well.

The Commodore 64 was the only error-free computer ever made, since they never updated the OS once. According to logic here, that makes it the best computer EVER.

"I can't believe the way you all complain about Mac VS MS updates... like either one of these platforms is 100% error free."

The difference is that only one of the two don't snidely claim to be error free. Apparently, neither one "just works".

Okay, off topic, but you mentioned VMware fusion...

That one and Parallels desktop have me a bit irate.

Why are Mac users allowed to virtualize windows *seamlessly* with the Mac OS, and yet, they can't seem to give us Windows users the ability to seamlessly virtualize *another Windows OS*?

I'm not even asking for Mac virtualization (Mac as guest). I couldn't care less about that.

The *only* VM proggy out there that has *any* kind of seamless integration mode between host and guest is VirtualBox...and it's buggy as hell.

You'd think the guys with millions in their pockets could throw something together...

Nate, Ed, Tim, Scott... Get on them about that, would ya? ;)

Sorry. Like I said, it makes me just a bit irate. I was so hopeful when fusion came out, thinking, "It won't be long now....". So much for that.

Gotta love all the PC fanboys.

7.4.1 is still bunk. Don't update yet until they resolve the issue.

Oh come on, what about the Mac fanboys, "Apple is more secure!"

Oh look, *another* patch! From Apple! For *another* security vulnerability!

What's that? You just unlocked your iPhone against Apple's wishes using a security hole? Oh snap!

Did I say anything about Mac's? Then why do you bring this up? Seems like you are pretty passionate here buddy.

Whats funny about this to me personally is that you know nothing about me yet you assume I'm a mac fanboy. Elaborate please.

p.s. Nobody says OH SNAP anymore you short busser.
