Apple releases OS X 10.5.3, users report problems
By Ed Oswald | Published May 30, 2008, 11:11 AM
The update to Apple's operating system fixes a multitude of its security vulnerabilities, but some users are reporting issues with graphics and Adobe CS3 after upgrading.
Along with fixing issues with incorrect fonts, video and audio playback, and wireless network connectivity, at least two dozen security issues were patched.
Mac OS X's Web server, based on Apache, has been updated. This was done by upgrading the version shipped with Mac OS X from 2.0.55 to 2.0.63, which addresses several issues, including a cross-site scripting vulnerability.
Adobe's Flash player was also updated in order to deal with a code execution risk. Apple said multiple issues are present, and the solution is to update to the latest version of Flash, 9.0.124.0.
Character encoding issues that could cause information disclosure have also been remedied, as well as kernel problems which could cause either the end user or attacker to cause an unexpected system shutdown.
Apple said an issue continues to exist with sending mail through an SMTP server over IPv6 which may cause the application to crash, put data at risk, or open a code execution hole.
Otherwise, code execution flaws have also been fixed in AppKit, Apple Pixlet Video, Apple Type Services, CoreFoundation, CoreGraphics, HelpViewer, iCal, and ImageIO.
More information on the specific vulnerabilities and fixes can be found on the Apple Web site.
The update process has not been smooth for everyone. Following the upgrade, users who were attempting to save files over a network in Adobe CS3 discovered some new issues along the way. Some of the problems first reported in 10.5.2 also apparently are still not corrected in the new version, according to some users.
Apple is aware of the Adobe CS3 problem, but the company says it's not widespread enough at this time to warrant significant testing to fix it, according to a report by AppleInsider.

"But then a Windows fanboy wouldn't - if only to be able to continue to make the same specious claims he does."
What claims have I made exactly? You can't come up with a decent argument or retort, so you fabricate some more BS. Typical Apple idiot. I didn't make _any_ claims. I was simply astounded by the fact that Apple advertises "it just works" yet they have a mile long list of problems. I live primarily in AIX. And I do happen to know security design and Information Assurance.
But then you obviously are not very familiar with the architectural features and distinctions between Windows and UNIX.
There is a difference between the coding of applications and the fundamental design structure of the OS. Lousy coding is lousy coding - something that should be addressed in the development phase.
Architectural features are a bit more fundamental.
But sit there and debate some actor who portrays a dweeb on a commercial and confuse marketing with reality. And your assertion that because an OS can 'potentially' be hacked, that it is equivalent to one that is routinely hacked and allows for the unrestricted fundamental compromise of the entire data resource environment as well as loss of control of the system is just a bit different.
But you keep debating commercials aimed at folks as swooft as you who still think the Mac is not a PC and that they are incompatible because they adopted an obscure protocol known as TCPIP in 1993 instead of using the world class NetBios...
Unfortunately, it is folks like you who lend credence to the otherwise silly and overly simplified world of marketing and commercials.
If you don't like the platform, don't use it. And if the others who inhabit this site are IT professionals who have a clue, they needn't be whining about competing platforms any more than a Porsche owner need worry about a Ford pickup commercial!

|But Vista people will get to ALSO use the new 64bit versions of Adobe software, none for OS X because Apple's development platform was crap and screwed Adobe. Besides OS X is still running on a 32bit kernel with RAM support for 64bit applications only.
(This is why OS X drivers from tiger to leopard still work, both 32bit OSes and 32bit drivers.)
Vista on the other hand has a real 64bit version that a lot of people are using. (With a real 64bit kernel, and 64bit register support and low level 64bit paging table optimizations, etc etc etc...
Macs and OS X are little more than marketing gone very wrong and twisted. Apple's only lasting dent is their marketing team that continues to cross lines other marketing companies won't even consider because it is borderline NLP mind control.
(Stuff that Derren Brown would normally demonstrate for people.)
If you are 100% sure you aren't in a cult, you probably already are... (Which includes a large portion of Mac users. If you have a Apple logo anything that isn't computer related, your in the cult. Being a Windows (unem)Power(ed) User, OS X 10.5.3 simply puts Windows to shame in almost every possible way. I'm relatively new to OS X but it's already supplanted Windoze for virtually every function and I get it done faster and more enjoyably. This is definitely what Apple should have shipped in November 2007 because up until now, there have been so many issues, you'd think that it had been a beta release.
As far as performance is concerned, my system is still running more slowly than 10.4.10 but it's better than it had been with 10.5.0 or 10.5.2. However, the user interface is generally responsive even if it masks the truth. At least, the Intel-based machines are so much better than with 10.4.x, even if they're losing data.
I must say that WinXP SP3 didn't provide as much of a boost for my other machine but it seems to be safer. Apple is slipping. 2.5 years to get a stable release from the start of development until now?

|I owned two Macs - an eMac with 10.4 and an iMac 24" LCD with 10.4.x.
10.5.x ruined the OS for me. The changes they made are simply horrible, in my opinion. Aesthetics alone turn it into a darker, less visually enticing experience.
They should have focused on improving the very weak FINDER app to provide some kind of decent file mananagement. Even MUCOMMANDER blows away anything included with the suite.
10.4.x was at least stable and attractive, even if the font smoothing is not as nice as clear type. But 10.5.x was unstable from the start, and after all the time, energy and effort I had put into working with OS X, especially on the 24" iMac, I was so incredibly frustrated and torqued off, I just flat out gave up on Macs and no longer own a single one.
You pay double for an iMac what a PC would cost, you upgrade to a full 2 gig of memory (which seems expensive, given it's laptop memory) just to get 10.4.x to run well, and then they tell you to get yet ANOTHER stick to max out your iMac at 3 gig so that 10.5.x can work effectively.
You have GOT to be kidding me.
Bootcamp limits your partitioning options big-time, the time machine backup stuff really only works well if you buy a separate external firewire or USB drive, and on top of all of that, it feels slower.
Forget it. PC's are cheaper, faster, easier to expand and XP has support until 2014. I just can't recommend to anybody that they fork out cash for an iMac computer. Not any more.
