Apple stock flirted once again with $200 close

By Tim Conneally | Published December 27, 2007, 4:12 PM

Update ribbon (small) 4:10 pm EST December 27, 2007 - The assassination of Pakistan's leading challenger to the prime minister's post may be to blame for a late afternoon plummet in Apple's stock value, along with the rest of the tech sector.

With the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling nearly 200 points by the close of trading Thursday, even a buoyant Apple -- which had traded at $203 per share at about 10:15 this morning -- couldn't help but get weighed down, falling to a half-dollar below yesterday's close at about $198.50.

2:51 pm EST December 27, 2007 - Closing yesterday at $198, and currently trading at over $200 a share, Apple's stock is the most valuable it's ever been.

Apple stock value reached an all-time intra-day high of $202.66 per share at 10:30 Thursday morning, and was flirting with that level again by 2:45 pm.

It's been a year of mostly good news for Apple, today being no exception. In the quarter ending September 29, Apple reported sales of 2,164,000 Macs, breaking its sales record by over 400,000. Those sales made Apple the third largest personal computer company in the US market with an 8.1% share behind Dell and HP, according to Gartner estimates. (iSuppli estimates place Lenovo at #3, with Apple not even in the top 5.)

The company also reported sales of 10,200,000 iPods in the quarter. So the device which held 72.7% of all portable media players at the beginning of 2007, is still dominating that market.

In addition, 1,119,000 iPhones were sold last quarter. The fact that Apple was not even in the cell phone industry just last year and became a major player with its first product is a testament to the current value of the company.

And topping that all off today was a landmark deal that will finally bring 20th Century-Fox movies to iTunes.

Anticipation of Macworld also traditionally contributes to the gain in share value in the first quarter. With rumors of a new sub-notebook Mac to be announced there next month, many are speculating that Apple's stock will continue to rise through 2008 as high as $300 per share and beyond.

Despite overall disappointment in holiday sales this year, the quarter ending on December 31 could be a banner one for the Cupertino company.

Ok, got 2 comments (just comments, not trying to start a war...much) :-)

1. I have NO PROBLEM with Apple stock going to $200 (or $400, or $4 for that matter...) what I have a problem with is that some yahoo in Pakistan gets offed, and that causes Apple (and the Tech industry as a whole...or any other market for that matter...) to tank? What the heck does that have to do with anything? It is sad, don't get me wrong, but it has zero to do with Apple, or GE, or Exxon, or Cardinal, etc.! Gotta agree with another poster, the whole idea of "stocks" is a bit disconnected from what they are supposed to be based on. The "value" of a company...not whether the Spice Girls tour is doing well! (obvious exaggeration, but mark my words, if it tanks somewhere....stocks will fall, and I don't mean just their record company, I mean everything!)

2. 5 years ago, Apple made (what appeared to be...) a cleaner product (design wise), supported it well (supposedly), and their price difference made (to some people, probably not me...) some sense. Special processor, special OS, special add-on cards, special I/F (Firewire, etc.), things were very DIFFERENT from WinTel/etc. because from the ground up they were different. Therefore price could logically be different because the product looked/felt/was different...

But now (Mac folks...) the hardware is Intel, the OS is Linux (don't start...you know it is just Linux with a dedicated dev team behind it....), the add-on cards/periph/etc. are the same as WinTel (for the most part) and you can run Windows natively on the same hardware that has a Mac sticker on the front!! NOW...(again Mac folks...) I think you should feel ripped off!

Kinda like American automobile companies saying they want to move production to Mexico, China, wherever the heck else so that they can make the vehicles "cheaper" for the American consumer....but the prices of their vehicles KEEP GOING UP! (oh, and by the way they lay off some poor guy/gal that has been turning a wrench for the last 20 years and making $40k doing it...now what are they supposed to do? With the overabundance of "manufacturing" jobs, they can just get another one huh! NOPE!)

The Mac is NOT Linux. It is based upon FreeBSD, a version of Berkeley UNIX derived from the licensing of UNIX from Bell Labs by UC-Berkeley!

It has little to do with Linux.

And as far as the differences, the I/O formats were universal. They were in no way platform dependent.

The difference was that they originally used Motorola, SCSI and NuBus, and then moved to a Power. The only real differences were the CPU and the bus structure. Nothing else was platform dependent. In fact, when NT4 first debuted, it supported Power as well-until MS killed that support!

So you perceptions of the fundamental differences are more emotional than real.

I love Power, but moving to a commodity platform where the developers have a reason for developing for the desktop - where IBM does not- made complete sense. And a unified platform allowing for all OSes to run natively is great. Now, if Apple will just release OSX for all PCs - even in an unsupported form, all will be great.

And stocks provide a means for a company to raise capital. It is a very good indication of the popular support they have that so many would pay this price to provide Apple with the cash to fund future products. So they are fundamentally tied to the company and the market.

And as far as your social economics and politics, just like Bhutto's assassination, it has nothing to do with Apple.

I hope you are not referring to me. I hate Microsoft as a whole. I own both Apple and MS products, just like I own both HD formats and a PS3, 360 and a Wii.

You misunderstand me completely, I dont have to take sides with Apple or MS, Sony or Nintendo, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. I simply buy them all and decide which one is best based on objective opinion. I don't care how much something costs and worry if I made the right choice like Dave / Joey, then spread lies to make myself feel better.

I make a very good living and luckily I don't have to budget our spending on entertainment and electronics.

Everybody picks a side and cheerleads like little scared lemmings. The difference between myself and most people is I want access to all HD movies, not just one format, all video games, not just one particular console.

As far as Microsoft is concerned, they are one of the biggest evil empires on the planet, but when you have one good choice of O/S that almost all software is designed for, you pick the path of least resistance, not the "I want to be different" brand that is great for video editing, musicians and loading your iPod.

My proof is that my $79 Sansa sounds better than my $379 80GB Video iPod, which is sad. Apple is truly overrated and overpriced garbage in my opinion. People seem to think they are important just because people see them with an iPod versus some other brand.

To show you what kind of person I am, I just shelled out $199 for an 8GB Nano for my wife on Christmas, knowing full well that the iPod truly sucks a bag of s*** compared to less expensive players. Why? Because she wanted one. Instead of letting my opinion of Apple get in the way of something she wanted, I just bought the damn thing and shut the **** up to make her happy.

You are one stupid individual foxfyre, evidently you are a side choosing cheerleader along with the rest of the half dead zombies roaming the planet but you just don't know it.

You buy brand X and bash the cometition simply because you were forced to decide. I buy one of each so I can watch listen and play whatever I please and then tell you what sucks because I actually know the difference.

Mario Galaxy is a deeper game than anything on the 360 or PS3. Nothing can compare to Zelda or Metroid. But, if you really were a gamer, you would know that.

Kind of like a real computer user knows Leopard is better than Vista. Or a real car enthusiast knows a BMW is better than a Pontiac. Or a food connoisseur knows butter tastes better than margarine.
