Apple to Sell Mac Mini at Best Buy

By Nate Mook | Published April 5, 2005, 4:04 PM

Apple on Tuesday confirmed that its $499 Mac Mini has begun shipping to Best Buy retail outlets nationwide. The move exposes the new Mac, which is targeted at Windows users, to a wider consumer base the same way Apple has done with its iPod. Best Buy previously sold Macs in 2003, but the program was ended.

"We are pleased to offer Mac Mini at Best Buy stores nationwide," Apple said in a statement. Mac enthusiast sites first reported on the Mini's retail appearance last week. However, it's not clear whether Apple will wait to push the low-cost Windows alternative until Mac OS X 10.4, known as Tiger, makes its debut later this month.

Word is they are going to get rid of the mail-in rebates eventually. But I'm not sure if that means lower prices or just no rebates at all.

I assume that was a joke right? Anyways i hate rebates as well :|

I never remember to send in the rebates. I am the classic "I'll send it in tomorrow" type and then all of the sudden it is too late. Like my CD burner that would have been $5, or my cable modem that would have been free....

I don't know why they would do away with mail-in rebates because they end up not losing money on idiots like me. Maybe I am in the minority of users :)

That's why they're so effective. I can't remember the exact figure, but Microsoft reports that only 10-20% actually use the rebates.

Yeh i'm the exact same as arron, "i'll do it 2morrow"

I also noticed on the best buy site, that the apple mini's are shipped with "10.3 “Panther”". Doudt that makes any difference.

It's about time they give up the rebate stuff - I haven't shopped there since they deceptively screwed me out of a rebate.

I found a laptop advertised on their web site, with a $100 rebate. None of their stores had it in stock, so I ordered it from the web site.

After I got it, I printed out the rebate form from the web site, and in fine print it said "In store purchases only". Yet they loudly advertised the rebate and bottom line price on the web site, and didn't have the product in the stores! So it was impossible to get the rebate!
