Ballmer: Google Antitrust Accusations 'Baseless'

Microsoft fired back at Google's attempts to have antitrust regulators take a second look at Vista's search capabilities, calling the search giant's claims "baseless." Google has issues with a feature in the next generation operating system that allows users to search their hard drives. The company claims it does not allow for competition from other search providers.
In a speech to the Detroit Economic Club, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer stressed that the company continues to comply with all restrictions handed down by the US government regarding Windows. "We think all claims to the contrary are baseless," he was reported by Reuters in response to a question on the matter.
Steve is right here. Besides, you don't have to buy Vista. You can install Linux or get OSX.
I've always thought that some things should be included in an OS. Searching for my files is one of them!

|You pick a PC instead of a MAC because PC's are assembled from interchangeable parts built to standards. Then you can pick and choose which parts you want. That was never supposed to stop at the operating system. Why not be able to pick and choose your file system and every other component of the operating system. If that is too much for you let the PC system builder put a nice package together. But let's keep the PCs an open-standards based alternative to the proprietary systems like the Mac.

Spoken like someone who's never worked in PC support a day in his life.
Can you even begin to imagine the migraines this would cause support personnel all over the world?
Well, at least the pain reliever folks would benefit.

|Oh, and to anyone who has not seen Ballmer in action...he combines the traits of Cruise's sofa incident on Oprah, with all the worst aspects of former presidential candidate Howard Dean.
To call him a blowhard is pulling back the reins and being kind.

|To mig1 - the point is that since MS search cannot be completely disabled, the slowing of the machine by addition of Google search is going to be attributed to Google, since the condition wasn't there prior. Unless the customer is made aware of what is happening, Google will be seen in the poor light that frequently bathes Microsoft.

Indexing is what creates the performance hit. Google can do one of two things:
Turn off the Windows Search Service (Disabling Vista's Indexing), or utilize Windows Indexing with it's own "front-end".
Instead, they decide to whine about it being built-in and falsely claim they cannot shut it off.

|Once again, toolie has no clue and forgot to read the Vista manual. Even with indexing fully turned off, Vista still indexes parts of your drive, like it or not. Dude, try reading Microsoft's own content sometime, and stop writing the same old lies every single day.

|Actually, if you do read it it states its switched to a lower priority so it doesn't cause any performance hit, kind of like how media player takes higher priority over other services when running.

|The solution commonly found online to turning off indexing (which doesn't work completely, as you so eloquently stated) is to disable it via the control panel (Windows Components).
Luckily, that's not the solution I suggested, or you would be correct.
Disabling the service "Windows Search Service", however, works as one would expect and ... disables indexing.
Not only did I read the (incomplete, short, and woefully inadequate) Vista manual, I actually did my homework and verified that it worked before posting it.

|Ofcourse they are going to build "their" search into "their" OS. I agree though Ballmer is a nut. http://youtube.com/watch?v=EHCRimwRGLs

|I agree with Ballmer, why is Google whining about the search being anti-competitive? Windows' indexer doesn't disable Google's, and just because it's built into the OS doesn't mean whoever wants to use Google's product can't. I guess apple should be weary: if Google releases (if they already haven't?) a version of Google desktop for OS X then spotlight will be just as anti-competitive for them too and they should get ready to face antitrust charges from Google as well. Google is just being idiotic on this one; not to sound like I'm anti Google but Google should stick to the web, their desktop products are crap in my opinion.

does mean they will be punished with poor performance.

|Not Microsoft's fault Google can't seem to disable Windows Search Service.
Only takes a couple of clicks for us normal humans, apparently it's one of the few things Google *isn't* capable of.

|Mind describing those "couple of clicks"? Read the part about file types, and yea, toolie's just vomiting another lie as a pandering Microsoftie phony, I see.

|Ballmer talks too much. Sure, if he's right then he may not look bad, but if the "baseless" antitrust accusations force Microsoft into court again--well, why risk the embarassment, Steve?

|To compare Steve Ballmer to someone who went to war to fight for their country and to then say all Vietnam Veterens are looney is absurd. I think you need to get out and meet and talk with some Vietnam Veterens. Yes they have problems but if you went through what they did you would have mental scars too. Steve Ballmer is nothing but a School yard bully who tries to intimidate his competitors by doing his bashing verbally instead.

|Sheesh people are touchy, it was my attempt to make a joke I failed, it was supposed to come out better (it sounded funnier in my head) I guess thats what I get for trying to come up with something clever in between calls.
The vietnam part was off base but he reminds me of the old guy who has been around forever but really has no clue what is going on, granted this isnt always the case with Ballmer it just seems IMO when he speaks he makes MS look more clueless. Back to the topic I agree with Ballmer on this one (I didn't RTFA first time) google's crap is bundled with everything and Apple has spotlight why isnt google complaining about them.
