Beta Heads Toward Nicaragua

By Ed Oswald | Published October 28, 2005, 5:37 PM

Not only software is going beta these days it seems -- but this beta is one you don't want to test. The Atlantic Ocean's 23rd named tropical system, Beta, headed toward the Nicaraguan coast Friday afternoon, and was expected to make landfall over the weekend as a Category 2 hurricane.

Portions of Nicaragua could receive up to 20 inches of rain, possibly causing life-threatening floods and mudslides, the hurricane center said. Beta is the latest storm in a season that broke a 72-year-old record for most recorded tropical storms and hurricanes. In 1933, 21 storms formed. Records have been kept continuously since 1851.

Hi, flameboy. You couldn't just reply to his comment, you had to make a new thread so you'd be at the top of the list so you can feel important, eh?

Hope it gets you far. (away)

While I feel bad for the folks in the paths of these storms I can't help but say in a playful way.....I never want to hear anything about California and our earthquakes...The big ones are few and far between and we do not have a quake season...and we dont name them

Wait, is this Beta 1? Beta 2? Do storms get better or worse as they progress from alpha to RC to Gold?

What's going to happen when it becomes an RC1? What are they doing to prevent pirating? Is this another take on "viral marketing"?

And who's the vendor/developer? Who do I contact if I have a problem with it? Homepage? Email address?

C'mon, man, inquiring minds want to know.

Yeah, Ivan and Dennis paid my area a visit. It isn't any fun is it?

What's worse is I don't think Nicaragua is very hurricane proof. It's not like they get them all the time.

I hope everyone down there is ok.

I know it has the word Beta in it, but what does a hurricane have to do with not only technology, but Beta technology? What happened to this site, it is a report for everything now, wouldn't the name imply it is for unreleased software or hardware in the Beta, RC, Test stages?

Every hurrican from now on IS going to get bigger and bigger! It's called global warming. We use too many damn gas guzzlers that pollute atmosphere so much making holes in the ozone and making the Earth hotter. Hurricanes form at the Equator, where its hottest. The Equator is getting hotter and hotter making it easier to form stronger hurricanes. George W. Bush had an opportunity to stop all this. He was asked to sign a law that would limit the ammount of pollution a car could create and a lot more... But he said,"I don't beleive in global warming".

I couldn't agree more with this comment. The rest of the developed world have signed up to max CO2 emmission levels to try and curb a massive increase in damage to the planet, but al that means nothing if the US doesn't do anything about it. The US is the world's biggest polluter and George "doesn't believe in Global Warming"? I can't believe you lot elected him again!!

Sorry, not exactly on topic, but hey.

Do you know ANYTHING about science and what global warming is REALLY about?

Come back once you've passed your Oceanography class and dropped your media-fed presumptions.

It's really sad that you think the president could have done anything to affect the hurricane season.

Global warming is definitely real, but it has been happening FOREVER. The global temperature has been rising and falling since day one. It's a _natural_ cycle over which humans have extremely little, if any, control.

You actually think automobile emissions have anything to do with it? Then explain to me why the largest holes in the ozone layer are over the poles. Thanks for playing. Try again later.

By all means, we should try to limit, and even eliminate, polution, but to blame an entire 23-storm hurricane season on one man is utterly ridiculous.

You honestly don't have a clue as to what you're talking about, do you? Bush didn't sign on because he doesn't believe in global warming. He didn't sign because he doesn't think the controls being outlined by the accord are realistic enough to have an impact and refuses to support a "flawed" logic. You Bush bashers really need to start watching/reading the news. Its scary to think how many uneducated voters really exist. And as far as Bush having the chance to stop global warming...get over yourself. No matter what we do, it won't help. You can't stop a trainwreck already in progress by shutting the train off. And like it was previously mentioned, global warming is being blown out of proportion. Earth has gone through periods of heat and cold for millions of years now. Its dangerous to think that in just the last 200 years we've altered the global weather patterns to catastrophic proportions, especially when there's scientific proof that there were periods of time where the tropical activity was just as bad, if not worse.

Score: 0

|

So, because we've already destoryed the Earth so much, it's useless to try to make things better? Yeah, that's some excellent logic there. You should apply for Rove's job if he gets indicted.

But seriously, the primary reason Bush won't sign the Kyoto Protocol is because it's a huge political sacrifice. Jobs would be lost from businesses that pollute too much, and saving the environment doesn't get you re-elected.

If you think global warming isn't happening, you're drinking way too much republican kool-aid. Thousands of scientists from all over the globe (including those in the Bush administration) have said this is a major problem that we need to deal with. Even the EPA has setup a Web site to discuss it:

www.epa.gov/globalwarming

Score: 0

The ozone holes, while not specifically related to global warming, do highlight a major problem with chemical pollution. Certain polar winds in Antarctica are the reason why the holes are there - they speed up the process. But the truth is, the ozone layer is thinning in MANY parts of the world due to CFCs. And if countries don't control their emissions, it could become a big problem for future generations.

Score: 0

Hey you think the Environmental Protection Agency doesn't need to justify it's own existence? Who's on the Kool Aide pal?

Score: 0

An organization for protecting the world in which everyone lives so we don't ruin things for future generations needs to be justified? :)

I have to add something.

I'm just curious: What kind of car do you drive?

Score: 0

So Bush is the only one with the right idea... he doesn't think the measures being proposed are good enough, even though most other countries have signed up?

Big George won't sign up to these plans because it could have a negative effect on the oil industry and all his Texas friends will get really upset at him. Couldn't have that now! The environment's not an important enough reason to upset his business partners over.

"I can't believe you lot elected him again!!"

That kills me when people say that. Translating, you can't believe that in the 2004 elections more than 50% of Americans disagreed with you on this. Quite frankly, I believe something else will get us before "global warming" will (though it will be a "fervent heat"), but now we're getting in to religion, which is way off topic. Regardless, Pacific storms have lessened in frequencey the past couple of years, and in fact the Pacific is COLDER than normal, not warmer.
