Bush Administration Puts 12 Countries on Piracy Notice

By the Betanews Staff | Published April 30, 2007, 1:52 PM

Twelve nations have been put on a list by the Bush administration to be more closely monitored for piracy violations as part of a broader crackdown by the US Government on the problem. Among the countries on the list are the more commonly recognized problem areas like Russia and China, as well as Argentina, Chile, Egypt, India, Israel, Lebanon, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine and Venezuela.

US Trade Representative Susan Schwab said that Thailand was added to the list due to worsening conditions surrounding copyright protection, while noting Brazil had been moved from the "priority" to the "watch" list amid improving conditions. Others, including Bahamas, Bulgaria, Croatia, the EU, and Latvia were removed from the list altogether.

WMP = Weapons of Mass Piracy?

I suppose we'll have to build up enough forces to "smoke em out of their holes" again.

Seriously (if I may): Russia, China, Israel, Venezuela? Does ANYONE in their right mind think the US has any real intentions of putting teeth behind warnings to any of them??? Does the US have any teeth left? Venezuela, Iran and N. Korea are pretty laughing at the US at this point.

Wow... So, Bush is seeking approval by thretening people in countries that cannot even hold a decent army?? Good idea Mr President.

Keep up the good work.

P.S. Learn to attack a country with bombs... if we have any left.

Yeah,Great but even if you are a Bush you can always get water. The politic hopefully soon runs out of fuel.By the way, there´s no one in the US copying? Futhermore, put the Bush in jail for crime against humanity. He just takes what he wan´t and give the s*** bout the rest. Put all countries in the world on the Bushmans list., cause where he lives there´s no crime at all. Am I right? The Bushman surely don´t bother. Besides that, you can´t allways get what you wan´t, and Bushman can you imagine, when you´re dead you can´t even buy anything with $. Or, have maybe the Bushman and his tribe see through so that is possible?

You know considering how well the economy is doing in the united states, I really don't get what the big deal is. Those companies must really be paying the lobbyists well, I mean damn. also is the government of those countries the problem or is it just simply if your from the country you have a im a pirate stereotype thing going on?

Many governments have, for all intents, a policy of looking the other way when it comes to riping off copyrights. This is just bad for everyone who develops and markets a product - not just US companies. Huge copyright violations are rampant in every country, but some actually foster it from the top for their own benefit. Those are the ones on the list.

All the clowns below who use this as a reason to foul the waters again with their hate for Bush are the usual mindless popular-culture drones and totally missing the point.

Very well said....

I don't care if you love or hate President Bush he is the President and deserves respect.

Piracy is a huge problem in many countries. There are laws made for a reason and a country that encourages breaking laws is morally and legally wrong. The countries mentioned have been a major problem for a long time with theft of intellectual property. Imagine if you made something and some one stole it, copied it and made money on it I'm sure many would change their tune.

Look past the hate and look at the true problem.

There's respect and then there's courtesy. Nobody deserves respect without earning it first. He hasn't earned it from most people. Based on widely known figures, even most of the GOP doesn't hold much respect for him at this point.

I agree with your comments, but reading the line above, it was hard not to laugh.

"There's talking slow, then there's just plain ineptitude. It's almost impossible to do a critical analysis of his speech because the man practically satirizes himself. Bush proponents have adopted a kinder word for inept: "Bushism." That's stupid. Why is it a screw up if anyone other than Bush makes a mistake, but a "Bushism" if he does it? When Clinton screwed up, nobody called it a "Clintonism." They called him a dumba** (and if they weren't, I sure as hell was). I mean, talking slow is one thing but to not know the difference between "hostile" and "hostage," or "prosecute" and "persecute" is not a "Bushism," it's extra-strength dumb." - Maddox

Respecting the office itself and what it represents is fine. Respecting a man who happened to get elected (somehow) into that office (twice!), no matter how dumb or ignorant he is, that's just idiotic.

Score: 0

|

The true problem is Bush keeps opening his idiotic mouth. He needs to shutup and be in prison for the rest of his sorry life. The traitor-in-chief can't even spell piracy much less know what it is.

If it's Microsoft who's worried about piracy, why not explain why they're offering Vista and Office 2007 for $3 to some parts of the world and charging almost $800 for Vista in Denmark? Stop using what you feel you have to steal. You don't need it.

The cure for piracy is two simple words: Open Source.

It never fails, you put "Bush" in the topic and you see very few constructive comments and a lot of America/Bush bashing. For somebody to say that the U.S. gains nothing once the software goes across the border is ignoring the definition of "piracy". With the EU attacking U.S. software companies on a daily basis demanding intellectual property be given to all who wants it at no cost, threatening fines and trying to make demands on productivity, I think cracking down on foreign pirates is right on target. Just like everything else in this world if you don't like the price or can't afford it then don't buy it. What type of mindset thinks that if it costs too much or they can't afford it then they expect to get it for free...?

I like the fact that he is doing something in this regard, now if there is an actionable item like stopping trade with that country, well, that would be action. If we do not pour money into the country in question (china in particular) it may actually make a difference. It is too bad that nothing has been done like that, but hey, the US is the nice guy right?

This is yet another case of Bushism. If I, as an Israeli, try to order a software title from Amazon I am refused on the grounds of copyright law (don't ask me how come, see Amazon). I tried to buy KidPix Studio for my little daughter but could not get it legally (or in anywhere near the price a US resident would). The Bush administration will do better to clean up his act first (note: some friend eventually bought for me the software in the US for $15 - compared with $40 some dealer offered me here)

I think there are two mistakes above:
1. Twelve nations have been put on a list... Nations? I think that states or countries.
2. Others, including Bahamas, Bulgaria, Croatia, the EU, and Latvia were removed from the list altogether. The EU is not a country. Latvia and Bulgaria are a part of the EU.

BTW, I have an impression that some countries are on the list due to political reasons. According to the EU & BSA the highest piracy level in 2006 was in Greece (audio, video & programs) but I cannot find it on the list.

Had to be edited because my English is rotten. Sorry.

well the flaw with her reasoning, is that if they were sold in that country, the u.s. wouldn't get any money out of it anyway, seeing as IIRC exports are not taxed, and seeing as the item in question would not be sold until it was in the other country there would be no revenue gained now would there?
