CES 'Better Questions' contest: Win Vista Ultimate, CS3, Zune and more

By Nate Mook | Published January 2, 2008, 4:26 PM

In preparation for CES 2008, which kicks off in Las Vegas on Sunday, we have decided to give away a number of products that have been gathering dust around the office. All you need to do to win is come up with a good question.

The rules are easy: leave a comment below with a question we should ask at CES. This question can be directed at a specific manufacturer or general technology. It should be something that would be interesting to other BetaNews readers and that it is possible to answer. We will post answers to the winning questions as we ask them during the event.

For example, Ask Microsoft: "When is your IPTV solution finally going to come here." would be a good question to pose. Ask Microsoft: "Why is Vista so buggy?", meanwhile, is not a good question. You get the idea.

Only leave a single comment below, or else all of your entries will be ignored. You can include up to two questions in your comment, so think about it carefully before leaving them. We will select the winning comments at the start of CES and try to uncover the answers throughout the week. Winners will be contacted for their shipping details.

What can you win, you ask? Here's the list of goodies we have available. The best question we select will receive the top prize while the next best will receive the product second on the list, and so forth. We may make exceptions if you already have the product. Good luck!

When did the operating system become the 'thing', relegating applications (i.e., the tools that actually enable us to get things done) to second-class status? Computers exist to run the applications that actually do the work, not to showcase the latest OS graphical beauty. The OS should create an unobtrusive, stable environment that allows me to run the applications that enhance my productivity. The OS should not take center stage, squandering resources that would be better used enhancing the speed and stability of my applications.

To Microsoft, two questions about media. First question: you recently added automatic support for Media Center files to the Zune software. Unfortunately, this support has a big hole: it does not work for HDTV content due to HD's Dolby AC3 audio. While clumsy workarounds are possible with third-party transcoding software, when do you plan to fix this problem and really push the Zune's integration with Media Center's DVR capabilities?

This seems especially important because Media Center is included with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate (who knew?). Zune integration gives customers a reason to prefer these higher-priced Vista versions.

Second question: given that USB HD input devices are now as little as $60, how do you plan to push the Media Center integration with TV in the coming year? that is, what products, promotions, or partnerships will you have to help me extend or abandon frankly terrible yet subsidized set-top DVRs?

Why was Vista not the Next upgrade to Windows XP, seeing as Vista is basicaly a XP upgrade, but sold off as a New OS.
There are better ways to making money, and I think if Microsoft would listen, they would understand what I mean.

Marketing should get into yearly rental of £24.99, no matter what the cost of the OS, this would generate the same money, and would ensure that everybody is using a protected version, then protection can be built into it, antivirus, firewalls, antispyware.
This would mean, if you buy a new PC, you pay for 1 copy of the software, not 2 copies, with one key, one name, one password for your account, which is what PASSPORT was supposed to bring to the table.

Why are we paying for a New OS, when its actually just Upgrades we are getting.

For Microsoft and the whole entertainment industry:

Regarding content management, digital rights, copy protection, product activation, and that whole area:

Has it occurred to you that maybe you have not struck the proper balance between negative reinforcement and positive reinforcement?

Have you realized yet that by 'circling the wagons' with your 'zero tolerance' approach on digital rights, utilizing software/firmware/hardware mechanisms that remain buggy and imperfect, operating on hardware that will inevitably at some point fail (taking customers' rights down with it), you are alienating honest customers, current and prospective, at a faster rate than you are discouraging criminals?

Don't you get it that widely available, high-quality, moderately priced, cross-platform media, that the consumer can TRUST to play where and when he/she wants, will bring the customers back?

Don't you see that a less-draconian activation policy for Vista (currently much harsher than XP's, even and especially for the full retail versions), coupled with a more reasonably priced family/household license, will help finally wean customers away from XP?

Don't you believe that a simpler, less byzantine series of hardware requirements for playing HD, coupled with more widely promulgated, easily understandable instructions, will ignite enthusiasm for the new technologies?

Finally, to put it in a form that even corporate executives might understand: have you seen what has happened to Amazon's stock in the few months since they started selling unrestricted MP3s? Not to mention Apple's since Steve Jobs issued his 'manifesto' to the entertainment industry?

Your policy has been all sticks and no carrots. Silly wabbits.
