As a next gen console that the Wii was supposed to be released as, its rather poor. Its sales succeed because it targets a larger market and has more appeal to the market than the xbox and ps3, eg: those family games and the never ending plethora of Mario games :\ . The PS3's high price and expensive SDK made them suffer, but they might recover. As for Xbox360, they're sales are doing well. In my unbiased opinion, as I own neither console.

Blu-ray outsold HD DVD 3:1 for ONE WEEK...which still isn't really all that great, when you factor in the number of BR capable players against HD DVD's.

The PS3 has sold 7.47 million units (to date) versus the 360's 14.73 million, and the Wii's 16.64. Granted, the PS3 is proportional to the 360 (when you factor in the time frames each has been on sale), yet it's being seriously dwarfed by Nintendo (who launched at roughly the same time).

first off...release dates on those sites are iffy at best...but ill take the word straight from Epic about the 360 version...

about Uncharted...all games have Jaggies...just the way it works....non of the "next gen" systems are powerful enough to pull off no jaggies...just the way it goes...but regardless Uncharted is simply beautiful...

about the sales...you have to remember a couple things...1. The Wii is in a whole different league...with its price point, and perceived "family fun factor" its selling like hot cakes...and 2. the 360 has been out for twice as long and has sold twice as many units...sounds about right to me...not to mention MS has played their trump card for the time being...the big time system seller that is the Halo franchise...there are BETTER games on the 360...but nothing quite moves units (on almost ANY console) like a Halo game...(sadly)

I personally think the PS3 is doing well...and blu-ray is OBVIOUSLY doing well...well to anyone who isn't blinded by pure hate for Sony...

My 20 month old PC pulled off no jaggies at 1600x1200, with no noticeable fps lag (to someone who is sensitive to that) earlier last month when the UT3 demo was released. So much for the display capabilities of the PS3.

It would seem as though we agree on a few points here (namely Uncharted looking nice, and the reasons for the sales disparities between the 3 companies).

I may be wrong here, but it would seem that MS's (notorious) dislike of user mods is the biggest 'issue' for bringing UT3 out for the 360.

The attach ratios you list may be accurate, yet it still fails to address one big issue: The ratio is still fairly low (in regards to the US and Europe), when you consider the numbers of BR capable players in homes. (Let's not forget Springer, himself, making reference to the format war being a stalemate, either.)

Personally, I don't want to see the PS3 fail. I've got a lot of good memories with the last 2 consoles that Sony produced (as well as a few bad ones, to be fair); and the competition can only benefit one group of people...the consumer.

Well as incredibly stimulating & interesting as the Sony/PS3 fanboys comments about how staggeringly great they find everything PS3 & Sony to be the answer to the original (on topic) question -

They are selling each and every PS3 at a loss (even if it is a reduced loss compared to before).

They aren't selling the volumes of games to offset these losses either and Blu-ray movies are selling in pitifully tiny numbers - which means even smaller numbers of the Sony studio movies so less direct profits there too.

It'll be interesting to see what they strip out of the George Foreman grill next to try and reduce their losses.......

......or how long they are able & prepared to sustain those losses.

I sgree. In fact, I reckon by this time next year we'll be hearing one of the options Sony has as a result of it's videogame failures this generation:

Option 1: Sony buys Nintendo, hoping to get retribution for losing the war this gewneration. Nintendo is folded into Sony Computer Entertainment, the next Wii is refocused on HiDef with support for HD-DVD instead of the now-dead BluRay, and the PlayStation 3 is killed off immediately in favor of Nintendo's technologies, as is the PSP within days after.
Option 2: Sony kills off the PlayStation hardware line when the PS2 comes up for retirement, and development for the now-dead PS3 goes along with it. As with Sega, SCE goes multi-platform, effectively following the path of the Saturn and Dreamcast ad infiniteum.
Option 3: Sony kills off SCE and liquidates the unit entirely in court via U.S. Chapter 7 (as well as international equivalents) in order to save the entirety of Sony Corp. itself from such a horrendous fate. Sony then uses the proceeds to start manufacturing HD-DVD players as BluRay loses favor, thus sealing the fate of the HiDef version of Betamax.

Three options, similar outcomes. Not much of a choice, Kazuo. And it's your fault, you @#$%ing moron! You and Kutaragi! And it's a shame that HE WENT FIRST, JAKOFF!!!

Take COD4, it's sold 70% of the amount the 360 sold, but with 40% of the install base.

The fact is PS3 gamers spend more on games than all the other consoles. The worst system is the Wii, where 70% of owners have never bought a game, outside the bundled Water Sports, or whatever it's called...

PS. I see you have run out of spin now about Profile 1.1, now there are over 7 million players supporting it (yep, 10x more than the dire HD DUD sales).

The actual latest numbers I've seen are 'Call of Duty' on XBox360 1.57 million & on PS3 444k.

I'd wait and see just how 'great' their 'interactive CD' type profile 1.1 turns out to be.
BD+ caused a lot of problems when it was introduced.

Personally I'm amazed they didn't go strauight to profile 2.0 cos without the net connection it's still all pretty lame compared to iHD.

The fact is, PS3 also has the hardware to do 2.0, and 2.0 is much easier to implement that 1.1 is.

Actually Profile 1.1 vastly outclasses the basic support than HD DVD has.

i wouldn't claim the ps3 as having the hardware to support future and present (1.1) profiles considering they have to use software emulation to pull of 1.1... from what i've experienced emulators never work as good as hardware based

Here come the little cheerleaders to drum up fake interest in the PS3. My launch PS3 is nothing more than a cheap substandard BD player. I've seen Elton John on a top end BD player with uncompressed audio, it's as good as anything I have seen on HD-DVD e.g Eagles Live.

If you are true movie fan and want to enjoy HD movies, you have to have both players or a good combo. Wait it out if you havent chosen a format yet, no matter which one you chosse, you are losing out on titles you will want but can't have.

I wouldn't call it a cheap substandard BD player. I think its arguably the best BD player available right now. Its likely the only one to be updatable to profile 2.0 and it has built in wifi.

As a gaming console, I feel completely different, but it is a very good BD player.

And I disagree with waiting it out. I say get an HD DVD player for nearly free - just pay for 10 movies :)

If that is the best then blu is in trouble.

In comparison to some of the standalone BR players (such as the sub $300 one), the PS3 is decent; however, I've yet to be truly 'wowed' by any movie I've played thru it (just my opinion).

The PS3 is a great machine, no question about it, same with the XBox 360, but the sad truth here is that the ONLY reason why these things are selling at all this Christmas season is because NO ONE can buy a Wii due to the fact that they are totally sold out everywhere.

Very, very few sales of PS3 or XBox 360 are actually to people who are buying them because they are their first choice. I know this because I work in retail and I talk to the customers that are buying these units every day. If the Wii's were readily available, we would likely sell almost no XBox 360's or PS3's.

Great games are very hard to come by since their aren't any yet.

Uncharted is THE BEST looking console game PERIOD...not to mention its a great game and an exclusive....Ratchet and clank is a great game....Gran Turismo 5 Prologue just launched in Japan and its amazing....come on there are great games...

not to mention you get a blu-ray player so you have the proper format when the format war ends... :)

is there any confirmation that MS's gaming division is turning a profit right now?...and if it is it took them nearly a year to do so...MS never made a cent of profit on the original xbox...

Whilst great graphics alone don't always make a great game (Lair..), in this case, both games have great gameplay, but I would play R&C anyday over ANOTHER mario game, and a poor looking one at that...

Here is a dose of reality for you. The store I work at has been sold of of Wii's for well over two months now. When they got in a batch of 60 of them, over 350 people waited in line in freezing rain and 25 degree temeratures for over three hours from 6am to 9am to try and get them. At the same time, stacks and stacks of XBox 360's and PS3's sit in the store unsold.

Now, you tell me who it is that has the attention of the marketplace and who it is that is generating all of the demand/excitement in this space?

I rest my case.

Unreal on console, I'll pass I have it on the PC the weak PS3 doesn't hold a candle to the power of a PC. Drake bought and already sold it didn't find it very exciting plus to much jaggies for my liking. Ratchet and Clank you mean the game that is selling very poorly yes it must be great to have sale numbers that sad. Then on to Gran Turismo, like I have stated before I have hated that game for the last couple of rehashes so I could care less. THE BEST looking game does not make it good, in fact that is why I sold it, not good.

Mario Galaxy is much more fun then Ratchet and Clank. You only rave about Clank because it is on the PS3.

Owning both a 360 and PS3, I have to say there are FEW games on the PS3 that are of interest. If I had unlimited income, sure I'd own more. But not wanting to buy game after game, most of the games that have appealed have been more apppealing on the 360. Warhawk is the only retail game I own for my PS3.

Now, for those that ONLY own the PS3, there's a decent selection to choose from.

Both are fun games. 1 looks like s***, worse that a PS2 game, the other looks truely next generation...

Once again I say graphics do not make the game. I would prefer a fun and addicting game of Mario Galaxy over the two you mentioned any day. Frankly I could give a shi& if a game looks next generation if it isn't fun I am not interested. I guess that is why I have more games on the Wii then I do the PS3.
