Carphone Warehouse Buys AOL UK

By Nate Mook | Published October 11, 2006, 12:26 PM

AOL shed yet another Internet access division Wednesday, announcing that Carphone Warehouse had agreed to purchase AOL UK for £370 million ($687 million). The provider of broadband and mobile phones will take over AOL's infrastructure in the country along with its two million subscribers.

The moves are part of an effort by AOL to distance itself from the ISP business as it attempts to rebuild as a free Web services provider like Google and Yahoo. AOL UK was the final international division that it put up for sale. Last month, AOL sold its French Internet access business to Neuf Cegetel, and its German unit to Telecom Italia.

I used AOL UK for a couple of years before moving on to an ISP with better support. However, *as an ISP* it was pretty good. I soon learnt not to use the software supplied, and used my own browser and mail software.

Thanks for the AOL advertising. Of course you heard from a friend of a friend who happens to know a friend, that AOL is a crappy ISP, no doubt. That makes you clueless and quite immature.

Not at all, I know plenty of people directly screwed over by AOL high prices, poor support and rubbish system killing software. Many of them I have helped moved to proper ISP's

What's crap about TalkTalk? :-p

Hidden prices. The advertising looks like TalkTalk is a good deal, scratch the surface and it's not so appealing

For example, the free brodband that costs £20 a month!!!

What's crap about TalkTalk? I got out of my contract for Broadband because they never actually provisioned it - just left my old ISP disabled. Subsequently they have repeatedly directed Debt Collectors to claim money from me. I paid £10 I didn't owe in September for a quiet life, and 'cos I thought they would go away. Now in October, 5 months since I cancelled they sent me a threatening letter asking for another £11, and I've jsut found out they have sent 'bad debtor' information to Equifax to screw my credit rating. Evil thives using extortion to get money I definitely don't owe them. That's why their crap. Hope that answers your questions. BTY there is no chance of discussing any of these matters with them, because as well as a poor technical service, their customer service is non existent.
