Cheaper Xbox 360 to debut in Japan in March

Even with poor sales, Microsoft isn't giving up on the Japanese market just yet.
Its low-cost Xbox 360 that went on sale for $279 in the US will debut in Japan for around $260 on March 6. Microsoft likely sees the cheaper price as a way to shore up its worldwide sales, which are lagging in the country.
The system has an identical SKU to its US counterpart, the Xbox 360 Arcade. It includes HDMI output, a wireless controller, and 256MB memory card.
During all of 2007, only 257,800 Xbox 360 consoles sold in Japan. While this is markedly better than sales of the original Xbox, it is quite far behind its competitors. 3.6 million Wiis and 1.2 million PS3's sold during the same period.
Microsoft has also fallen behind in the overall console race, selling 17.7 million consoles versus over 20 million for Nintendo. Sony is also seeing a rebound here, selling 10.5 million units so far after a very weak start that many blamed on its high price.
A stronger showing in the Japanese market would do much to keep the 360 one step ahead of Sony, and help it to catch the Wii, which has begun to level off sales-wise after a wildly successful launch.
However, Japanese gamers seem to show a strong preference for Japanese-based gaming companies, something Microsoft is not.
HEY JAPS, CHINKS, HONKYS, CRACKERS, BEANERS..... Shut up already. Thats what is wrong with westerners. Everything has to be politically correct. Its only offensive when people tell me I should be offended by it. Don't tell me what I should and shouldn't be offended by.
Get over it! you people could have easily ignored my comment and just think that i'm in idiot (i am), but noooooooo, you had to go on and onand on about it. "ohhhh, people will get hurt, ohhhhh, its not nice" SHUT UP! Now its a problem because you people would not shut your pie holes.
I'm sorry i said it already! can you people move on now?

|There are room for two players. I am sorry, but I cannot put the Wii on the same playing field as the PS3 and 360, so we have two players in the market of hardcore gaming. The Wii cannot be stopped at this point and that should not be the focus of Sony or MS. We have a fight for second place that has blessed us with cheaper consoles and additional features on the part of MS. Even though HD DVD is on it's last leg. MS and Intel backing of the format started a price war and we are now seeing Blu-ray players coming down in price...so kiddies competition is good. Enjoy the games for both or all three systems and quit getting so worked up about who is doing what. If you cannot afford all three systems, get that one that you like and have fun. No need to flame...no need to pound your chest, just thank the other guys for playing and making the developers make better games to compete for your dollars.

the PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide in 2007...it will outsell the 360 worldwide in 2008 for sure...chances are the PS3 will never catch the Wii, but it only took the Wii a year to catch up and pass the 360's head start...
if the 360 only has a 7 million console lead in sales over the PS3 then that is BAD news for MS...that means with a 1 year head start (with ZERO competition that first year) the 360 has a sales lead MILLIONS of consoles less than what Sony sold this year with a premium priced console....as the price continues to fall on the PS3 demand will rise....people know that the PS3 is a more capable machine than the 360 in terms of overall features (built in blu ray and a generally more robust A/V offering) not to mention that the PS3's potential is beginning to surface (DMC4 is better on the PS3, Uncharted, UT3, Gran Turismo 5, free online gaming etc....)demand for the PS3 is on the rise for sure....demand for the 360 is obviously falling....
and let me clarify that i DO own both a PS3 and a 360, and I play my 360 plenty. It is a wonderfully powerful console with a great game library....unfortunately it was "blessed" with some of the most poorly developed hardware i've seen....shame really...

It's because the 'almighty' Blu-ray drive is only 2x and it takes forever for it to load anything. So for the most part loading time is actually longer on the PS3 vs 360; unless it 'installs' first onto the hard drive.

|"Metfanant" is a POS3 fanboi idiot. He claims that this SH** console is going to overtake the 360 with it's premium priced console. Yet he forgets that MS and the 360 still have more consoles sold even over the past holidays. Exclusive content on dual format games and better EXCLUSIVE Games.
He then tries to point out how cutting edge his console is but when you ask any developer they prefer the 360 over the POS as it is closer to a windows based system and allows them to do much more than they can with a POS architecture he will then try and argue the superiority of the BLORAY and the what is now discontinued 80G POS 3 with claims that the future will bring games which will utilize this space. Yet he forgets that by that time the world will have moved onto the next generation console and this POS3 console will still not be amazing the gaming community.
With all these sales falling why oh why is the this "poorly developed" console still kicking your console's a** in sales? Why maybe because xblive is much better than the POS' online. Perhaps the only way Sony can attempt to compete is by making a online loitering based world where you can have kids hang out instead of at the local mall.

|i really do not see this making any difference. M$ failed in Japan for two main reasons
1) Horrible reliability issues. Kind of like the failure of the US auto industry there. Outside of the USA, consumers are much more concerned about the quality of what they are buying.
2) Lack of games the Japanese want to buy.
They can improve on both of those items, however the damage done by the reliability issue will take another generation or two to work itself out.

|What pisses me off more than anything is the fact that in India and other countries, they only pay about half of what the USA pays for the same games.
Brand new Nintendo DS games retail for the equivalent of $20US in India whereas we pay $40 or more. They stick it to the economies with more disposable income.
**** em all I say, Microsoft only gives the cheapest console to to biggest failing market? This is why people don't feel the least bit ashamed when they download games, movies, and music for free these days.
I heard piracy in Japan and China is rampant, If I read correctly, there have been more than 45 million R4 type cards sold for the DS worldwide. The last I checked, there were only about 55-60 million Nintendo DS consoles sold.

|If you think being called Brit is even remotely the same you're mistaken. The Japanese term was used during World War II and it was used in a very offensive way. It's not about being sensitive, it's about being polite. You may have met some Japanese who laughed it off the same as you may find people who will laugh off any insult against them. As much as the PC crowd can go overboard with things the same can be said for the anti-PC people who go too far the other way.

|If you find someone who doesn’t respond with a 'huh' when you say jap then chances are the person doesn’t think its a derogatory term.
Interestingly it's been Westerners in the past that made a really big deal of this word being derogatory. When it's been actually polled however there is very little Japanese who actually care or think it is derogatory.
Today, there is nothing wrong with that word at all. You can use it as much as you want it’s simply an abbreviated word.
Those people complaining take gaijin blogs too seriously and have not actually experienced living here.

Well I guess that proves it then, you asked yourself. Just...wow. Apparently your opinion speaks for the rest of the world. Just how big is your ego anyway?
"It's people outside japan that make a big deal of the term."
Nonsense. You can't speak for all of Japan just because you asked yourself. Apparently you don't remember the incident a few years ago between Japan and Korea. Just do a little research, you'll find that they most certainly do not like being called that, and trying to make the point that it's outsiders who are offended is rather dumb. The fact that they do find it offensive should tell you something.
It is pretty much universally accpeted that it's an ethnic slur. There is no reason to use it. Saying that there are other things that offend people doesn't make it ok.
Score: 0
|Well thats the point then... it's an English "abbreviation", so whether or not its understood locally (I live in Japan also)is a moot point. The word has no use or meaning within Japan. Its a foreign word with a history of being used in a derogatory form to describe a nation or its people.
If the common perception or understanding is that it is negative then there is no point in using the term. Only an uneducated, immature or perhaps just ignorant (see chia-homer) person would use it.

Who are we offending again? The japanese? Nope, then who? People here? Get over it.
It is NOT universally accepted that it's a slur. It's understood its been used by groups (groups that like to think they are a majority at that) in the past as a slur but far short of how widespread the word really is used.
Why is there no reason to use it? Who gave you the ability to dictact what people are allowed to use?

No but I can at least say I was alive and old enough in the 90's or early 2000's when a stupid Politician tried to pass a law banning the use of the word Jap in japan. A guy incidently who spent most of his time in some embasy well away from Japan. It became quite clear then that most didnt even know what it meant and those who did - did not even know of the racial slur side of it.
Yes there is a world outside the racial comments the allies made about their enemies during ww2
