Christmas shopping not looking so much 'Blu' as dismal

It's the first holiday season since Blu-Ray put a stake in the heart of the rival HD-DVD format, but if Sony and friends thought that would mean a clear field of fire on shoppers' wallets...sorry, wrong year.
One would think that the looming digital TV deadline in February 2009 would drive the purchase of at least the new television equipment. According to most statistics so far, one would be wrong about that -- even though HDTV prices are on the decline.
Panel members at this week's HD3 conference in Century City, California were in accord: The slow economy won't speed up adoption of the high-definition format, which requires, in addition to discs that cost $25 or more apiece and players that can't seem to break the $200 mark, HD television with all the trimmings.
Yet Hollywood is a land of boundless optimism, and the mood at HD3 was generally one of "yeah, recession, whatever, tech adoption will happen." (Confidential to Sony head Sir Howard Stringer, fretful that someone might have carved the words "Betamax 2" on his tombstone had the format battle gone the other way: I will send you a shiny quarter if any of the following elicits a wince from over 50 percent of your staff: Newton, Rocketbook, Yahoo Internet Life, Tesla Motors mid-range vehicle. Any tech product seems as if it can't fail when you can't remember all the worthy ones that did.)
Certainly the retailers are trying to move units; Amazon on Wednesday announced a 3-for-2 sale on various Blu-Ray titles and players along with other deals designed to get players, discs, and if necessary, HDTV sets moving.
But Hollywood optimism and Amazon moxie pale in the light of Monday's announcement that Circuit City is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and Wednesday's declaration from Best Buy that "in 42 years of retailing, we've never seen such difficult times for the consumer." Credit crunches are particularly murderous on high-ticket, big-box-bought items such as HDTV sets and high-end players.
And perhaps those among us who prefer the wait-and-see approach aren't so wrong. A glance around Best Buy's site on Wednesday afternoon found that if we were in the Blu-Ray market, the least expensive player available would set us back $230 (no sign of the $199 promo unit Best Buy was recently touting), after which we'd have 1,171 discs from which to choose.
In contrast, we could hook up with a $30 DVD player (if the ones in our various computers didn't suit us), and the selection of titles available numbers a staggering 77,682...not counting all those we already own. Sure we know we can play those DVDs in a new Blu-Ray player; we just want to be sure we can keep the electricity on while we do so.
I echo the comment--the difference between a good upconverting DVD and a blu-ray is minimal, especially if you're watching movies with dark tones like Pirates of the Caribbean series or Harry Potter series. Now, throwing on a free digital copy version that is compatible with either the iphone and the Zune, that would be welcomed. This Digital Copy crap that only works on certain devices suks.

|HD TVs make up only 34% of the total US TV user market.

Of course that will rise in time but we also know on the latest figures available that the HD TVs that have been sold are small (32" - 42") 720p sets.
http://blogs.computerwor...e_1080p_hurting_blu_ray
None of this helps Blu-ray.
The difference between upscaled DVD and Blu-ray on a 32" - 42" 720p HD TV, at normal viewing distances is minimal.
Blu-ray is the new Laserdisc.
That's great for those of us who can accept that and afford these disposable formats.
It is pretty funny watching the PS3 fanboys who screamed so long and loud for their expensive game console format to win now realising they have been suckered.
The Samsung guy said another 5yrs and he's probably right.

|Hard copy media is not going away, despite what the 14 year old MP3 crowd thinks.
And there are plenty of folks who choose not to opt for volatile streaming technologies for transient viewing as opposed to dealing with better quality archival media - despite the much more attractive business model from a distributor perspective that downloads present. And that is not going to happen without some form of DRM.
Now that does not mean that everyone will opt for BR! With its prohibitive price of entry and the high consumable unit costs, its simply not going to fly.
But it 'ain't' streaming that is killing it!

|Its the kids wo are not buying as they think they are entitled to music for free. They also can't find Chicago on a map, nor identify the continent of which Mexico is a member.
But they are not the only market for media, and certainly not the one that controls the majority of spending.
Hardware sales are down for a number of reasons, and not all are due to perceived price or because of listening to it on an iPod.
Most significantly, how many CDs have you been excited to purchase? If you are like me, that is not a function of the media, but rather of the available product choices! And I am a 'collector'! Yup, I just can't wait for the next rap release....yeah...

|No but they probably have a computer that has an optical drive in it. Heck I bet the said computer probably had recovery discs of some sort that must be placed in this said aging optical drive in order to restore it.
I might be even daring to say that they have burned a CD with said optical drive to be played later in another optical player of some sort.
Just like DVD-Burners are standard and have replaced all CD-ROM/CD-Burner drives I can see BD-ROM and eventually BD-Burners doing the same. You could purchase a new OS and install it using a BD drive of some sort just like you could with DVD-Rom drive. The same can't be said for streaming media or flash cards or other removable media. Of course price is still one of the big factors (if not the factor) holding this transition from taking place.

|I am 27 and I have not bought a hard copy move (unless it was on sale or used) in a long time, but I have bought from iTunes and subscribed to a lot of stores (most of which are closed down now...). DRM is definitely a hassle (except with itunes and an ipod) and more trouble than its worth but DRM is on its way out along with s***ty optical media. Like I said, wait it out. Ive been buying DRM free music for a good bit now (in fact i have made a pact with myself not to buy from itunes unless the track has no drm). Amazon's music store also has DRM free tracks, because of customer confusion and terrible experiences with DRM, what would make you think that movies will not soon follow the trend. Again, wait it out. Dont be a fool and buy every movie you want on BRD or you will regret it sooner than you think.

|Most people(unlike me) do not care that BluRay is clearer. It isn't worth the extra $$ to many, I just got the new technology DVD player from Toshiba XDE that clears up ALL DVD DISKS by 15-20%, I paid under $100 for it on Amazon.com.. Now ALL of my disks look much better. Blu Ray could absolutely go out,ad HD DVD did. It is NOT catching on to the mass appeal. Between being too expensive,as well as the increasingly popular movie download options, BLURAY may never really catch on.

|I have said many times that, the reason there is not as many BluRay sales as normal DVD's is because the Movies that have come out the last 3 years have mostly been average.
Now if StarWars Double Trilogy, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Titanic, Lawrence of Arabia, Aliens Quadtrilogy, Jurassic Park Trilogy, Schindlers List, Indiana Jones Boxset, and Gladiator, Came out on BluRay this Christmas, there would be no doubt what would be top of the DVDBluRay Charts=== All of the above and some. In any event, customers want value. Sony hasn't provided that in decades. When the economy gets tight, the purveyors of overpriced fluff suffer the most.

To the average person on the street, the success or failure of BR is not a function of which company developed it! Hell, you still don't seem to understand who did! (...Give me a moment to stop laughing so hard that I can try to type...)
The prohibitive factor is the PRICE.
Only the Palmetto Bug can turn the BR issue into a reflection of his fetish regarding Sony.
The fact is, Sony has still not recouped their NRE (non-recurring engineering) development costs! They still haven't made a penny off this technology!
If BR players and consumables were the same price as regular DVDs, they would fly off the shelves.

End of discussion.

Or the sales figures.
I mean, the song has been sung so many times over the last two decades that you don't even need to hear the words:
"Let's come out with a Brand New Technology. No one really needs this but we'll artificially hype it and make it sound like the Second Coming. We'll make it proprietary as hell and attach a HUGE licensing fee to it so the cost of it will be golly-gee-whiz. We'll put the Sony name on it because the rubes still believe - stupid suckers - that the brand means quality. And even though it's not really as good as we claim, we'll spin and spin and make the con work. Oh No! People are wising up! This is awful! It's happening again! The PS3 is still the best BD player for the money and we get a ton of use out of ours using the 1080p upscaler.
