Comcast to Double Download Speeds

By the Betanews Staff | Published June 2, 2006, 2:39 PM

Cable provider Comcast plans to roll out a new feature starting in New England that will double the speed of customer downloads from 6Mbps and 8Mbps to 12Mbps and 16Mbps. The PowerBoost feature is expected to roll out to the rest of Comcast's customer base by the end of the year.

Unlike previous speed upgrades, however, Comcast says the PowerBoost feature will only be available when extra network capacity is available. When not available, the standard rates are guaranteed, the company said. Upload speeds, a common complaint among customers, will also not change.

oh please, stop your whining, the fastest adsl I can get my phone exchange is 1500kbit/256kbit (oh yeah and the 15gig per month limit that goes with that)

Thats an average in Australia, and I live in Melbourne, with only a few exchanges up to adsl 2...

so you can stop complaining about your 8mg slow downs..... its just not fair.

Where do all of these haters live? I have the 8Mbps service, and I actually get 8.3Mbps downloads, and about 740Kbps uploads. The service only had one problem(DNS) in the 6 years I have had them. Their service rocks in my opinion, and DSL forces you to have a phone land line, which I do not need. I only use a mobile. So the fastest DSL, plus a non-listed phone land line, comes out to more than Comcast Internet alone, and Comcast is way faster.

This is the biggest crock of crap on earth. I have been with comcast (due to no real choice) since @home was beta testing. The story is always the same...every few months they talk about how they are dramatically increasing internet speed and then they slowly crank it back until it is back to poke speed.

They charge extra if you don't buy into their crap quality cable tv offerings and seem unprepared to deliver a level of quality that is even close to what they advertise.

The most recent Comcrap ploy was improving their network to roll out their own phone service. When they were done my bandwidth dropped 40 percent, QOS went to hell, upload speed dropped from 370 to 320 and my voip service (not theirs) has gone to hell. In the mean time I was paying for service while dealing with frequent service interruptions so Comcast could tweak up for a phone service that THEY are going to make money on.

If Comcast had kept all its speed and quality promises over recent years we would all probably be running at an impossible 300Mbps. *laughs. Instead of improvements all I see is below average speed during prime time, a few hours in the early mornings where there is halfway decent download speed, capped out modems and major intermittent service.

They have virtually killed USENET for users of their service, their personal web hosting offers outdated technology and no quality resources, their TOS forbids running even a tiny server on their network and their tech support makes Geeks on Wheels look like MIT.

When there is a service issue they often don't show up for appointments or they call and tell you the issues are intermittent and they will continue to work on them *DUH! If you complain enough they will try to sell you an upgraded service package ...that sounds like the one you are already paying for.

Comcast is full of crap and their service sucks.

Score: 0

We traded in AOL dial up service for SBC/YAHOO's high end DSL service. It's $34.95 per month and works fine after a line upgrade from the phone company. Then, why pay more for COMCAST's service? They have a bad reputation.

I can't get these clowns to clean up our dirty TV recption. The leaky COMCAST cable system attracts stray broacast, ham and CB radio intereference. I tried a TVI filter which doesn't fix it for me. Most of those lower channels look like $h!+. And the same goes for certain cable networks like Fox News Channel and CNN too.

Three different service techs have failed to clean up their mess!

COMCAST is just too damned big. Service stinks; where you have no good alternatives. Now they're complaining because California's liberal DEMOCRATIC state legislature, just passed a law to ban monopoly franchise service contracts with city and county governments.

We might actually get more competition from the phone companies and satellite distributors. And decent service. I can't wait for it...

Score: 0

I stick to my original point. Most often, peak speeds test out in the range of less than half of the advertised speeds. If Comcast, et al, say you're getting 6MB, most often you end up with 2-3. They offer some customers 6, but the disclaimor is "where available". Thus adding on more super-duper top-end speed is just a mirage; they need to deliver their advertised speed to their customers, and then (and only then) should they be piping up about expanded top speeds.

Imagine if Chevy advertised that its cars could all go 193mph. (Disclaimor: only if you own a Corvette. Actual speeds may vary.)

OK, now I know you are lying, that is complete BS, dumb ass. I worked for a DSL provider for 2 years, so I *know* that is not EVEN close to being the truth.

You do NOT have a dedicated line, you have PART of a central SWITCH, which disperses the signal to your neighborhood. Your neighborhood is serviced by the switch. You don't travel ALL the way back to the CO to get your link to the internet.

That "share the connection" is an urban legend, because FIRST of all, corporations uses internet sharing, its called the LAN, you idiot. So, before you start saying that a "shared" internet is bad, talk to ANY LAN admin, and that's exactly what you are doing..

And that's only sharing a T1 in most cases, which is only 1.544 meg, and users don't complain about those speeds.. it may be slow, but its not because of sharing, its only slow because people compare it to their home computers.

DSL suffers the SAME slow downs as cable people do, and to say otherwise, you are WRONG. We all visit the same webpages, we all visit the same DNS (ultimately) on the internet, the speed from your house to your ISP may be a little differnent, but ANYTHING that requires an external address, is the same.

DSL runs along phone lines. Phone lines are above ground, usually. Cable lines are buried. DSL therefore is subject to wind, rain, radio inference, all kinds of stuff, even your own 900 mhz phone can interefere with DSL connectivity, Cable, doesn't suffer from such interefence, its sheilded. Phone lines are not.
