Creative Debuts Zen V MP3 Player

By Ed Oswald | Published June 21, 2006, 12:06 PM

Creative Zen VStruggling electronics maker Creative pressed on late Tuesday, introducing the Creative Zen V Plus, its latest music and video player. The device is small enough to fit in the coin pocket of a pair of jeans, and includes a 1.5-inch color OLED screen.

The Zen V Plus is also PlaysForSure compatible, meaning it supports subscription music services. The player also includes a line-in port for direct recording from audio devices and FM radio, and a voice recording feature.

"We developed the Zen V Plus with a look and a user experience that create the true feeling of Zen," Creative chairman and CEO Sim Wong Hoo said. "Photos and videos and our patented Zen user interface look so vivid on the stunning color screen and the sound quality is awesome; it's surprising for such a tiny player."

In addition, Creative has also made available a model called the Zen V. The lower-end player does not have video or FM radio support. Both Zen V models come in 1GB, 2GB and 4GB capacities.

A 1GB version is available in black or white with orange accents, running $119.99 or $129.99 USD for the Zen V and Zen V Plus, respectively. The 2GB in black or white with green accents is priced at $149.99 and $169.99 USD, which the 4GB version in black or white with blue accents costs $199.99 and $229.99 USD.

The Zen V is expected to be released in July, with the Zen V Plus following in August, Creative said. Additionally, Creative plans to make accessories including cases, skins and power adapters available in July as well.

I doubt it it will be a good sell if it's price is in line with iPod nano. If you want to take market shares from ipod, they need to lower their price and have some hot marketing.

I personally haven't notice a TV commerical from creative.

"Size: 43.5 x 67.5 x 15.9mm"

jesu cristo, that's small! that's like, what, a large matchbox? and the screen's actually large enought to be useful... shorter than the ipod nano, a bit thicker... better (tested) battery life. of course, they would have to botch it by not allowing drag-and-drop of music and not having mac/linux support.

playsforsure does allow drag and drop for music and files. the mac/linux thing... meh not an issue for me.

DUDE I WANT A SKINK!!!

everyone wants a skink, sadly when i went back to post this, they were no longer offering skinks, but instead a inferior grade item called a skin. maybe they couldnt meet demands? maybe they needed a price revamp, or maybe political preasure is to blame, or maybe they are going the way of the sony and microsoft and just delaying the release of the fabled skink, we may never know. but what i do know is this, there will be many people anxiously awaiting the release of skinks.

This one looked pretty, but I still like my iAudio 5 60gb better. It also has an FM radio and a line in recorder. It also supports ogg and flac, drag and drop and also fits in my coin pocket.

iPod, like most Apple products are designed with simplicity in mind.... Which is fine, but not at their prices!

Oh, sometimes "simplicity" also means having as few features as possible so that they can have better sales margin.
