Dell Offers First Sub-$100 Laser Printer

In a move that could spark a price war with more established rivals Hewlett-Packard and Lexmark, Dell has launched a new laser printer priced at just $99 USD. Despite its low price tag, the Dell 1100 printer is more than capable for home and small office settings with a speed of 15 pages a minute and 600 dpi resolution.

The cheapest lasers from HP and Lexmark more than double Dell's $99 price, and 2,000-page toner for the 1100 costs only $65 compared with $94 from Lexmark. A 1,000-page toner cartridge ships with the printer. "Customers are eager for a low-priced personal laser that fits comfortably on their desks and within their budgets," said Tim Peters, vice president of Dell's Imaging and Printing business. "The 1100 addresses that broad market need."

Samsung manufactures this printer, so it should be good. Dell's 15ppm printer is a variant of Samsung's 20ppm ML-2010. http://product.samsung.c...p;prod_id=ML-2010%2fXAA

My Uncle just got a $700 HP Laser Printer, but for $80/colour he can get 4000 page toners. Still, that thing is designed to last...it's got a duty cycle of 20,000 pages/month. :P

He says he prints about 20,000 pages/year though, so it should last for a while.

Edit: Oh yeah, and it came with 4 full cartridges, so really the printer only cost about $400.

I'd rather have a Brother. My HL-5140 cost me $200.00, but for $75.00 I get a 6000 page (yes, 6000) toner cartridge! It ships with a 3500 page starter cartridge.

2000 pages for $65 !!!!!!!!!!

I think I will stay with inkjet were it only cost $10-$20 to do a complete refill and it last for at least 500 pages.

Yes, so assuming $15 per cartridge and 500 pages per cartridge, you are spending $60 and having to change it four times. This way you spend $5 more and only change it once. The math works out the same my friend...

Read the article, it ships with a 1000 page cartridge. as all other printers ship with starter cartridges also.

Does anyone recall the Polaroid camera? They could have given it way - the profit was made on the film. Same deal here. Inkjets and toner, if proprietary, make the companies a fortune. Now having said that... I pay almost $200 for my toner, so where do I sign up?

Thats Grammar check, spell check only checks if words are spelled correctly, not how they're used.

Speaking of I'd like to see both on this site, since some of the comments made by our friends who are new to the English language can't seem to express their thoughts clearly. I know I'm not winning any spelling competitions either but at least I try.

While I agree with that statement (and many others from that movie, which was just basically fluff though) I like this move. All we need now is that magic ink that allows us to print off circuit boards.
