Did the PlayStation 3 Truly Launch on Friday?
By Scott M. Fulton, III | Published November 17, 2006, 4:06 PM
Certainly it was an event that merited coverage on a national scale. The top three events on morning TV news programs this morning were the Senate debates over how to proceed in Iraq, the infighting among the new Democrat majority in the House, and the lines outside electronics stores full of people waiting for a chance to purchase a Sony PlayStation 3.
But unlike a big movie premiere, where hundreds stand in line for hours knowing they definitely will get what they came for that night, prospective PS3 customers could not be assured of fulfilling their wishes. Nor, as it turned out, was everyone waiting specifically because they wanted to be the first to play the PS3. As television and newspaper sources - including the San Jose Mercury News - both discovered easily, and to their amazement, some of the first in line were bragging about how much they'd be able to reap after they turn around and hock their newly purchased wares on eBay.
As Dean Takahashi reported on the Mercury News blog, the very "first dudes" in line in front of a special launch distribution at a Sony-owned shopping complex in San Francisco consisted of a group of college students who told him their exclusive purposes for being there was, first, "notoriety" (the chance to be on the news) and to make a killing on the eBay sale of multiple PS3s. Up until that "killing" takes place, they may have time to squeeze in a game or two. (Unlike automobiles, used PS3s don't seem to instantly depreciate.)
In Houston, NBC affiliate KPRC found several more people in line, waiting for what they described as a chance to triple their investment in a few days' time. "It's not that big of a deal to wait when you're talking about making $1,500 in a night," said one.
The first fellow in line outside Sony Plaza in New York City, according to The New York Times this morning, just happened to be a day trader - a person who makes a living buying and selling stocks, and certain other investments, once they've rapidly gained value in the short term. You might think this would be an investment purchase as well. But it's probably lucky for Kaz Hirai, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, and Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony Corp. - whose smiling faces appear blurred against the background of their #1 customer in his Times photograph - that his immediate plans were to go home, shower, and play a game.
By mid-afternoon Friday, auction prices for the PS3 on eBay ranged as high as $3,000, with same-day guaranteed shipping. It wouldn't make any sense for anyone to pay that much and have it shipped next week.
Even the site manager of the newly-rechristened PS3News.com (formerly known as PS2NFO.com) admitted temptation. "I managed to get one of only four pre-orders from my local shop - the coveted 60GB PS3 console!" he writes. "It's VERY tempting to EBay it, however, as I purchased it today the store manager informed me that they didn't know when they would be getting more in - and it could very well be after Christmas."
That Sony will easily sell every PlayStation 3 it produces is a very safe prediction. During the early part of this year, when PS3 was first delayed, another safe prediction was that the company would only produce limited numbers during its initial run. The fact that Xbox 360's initial numbers were unexpectedly limited, and that its launch last year ended up widely perceived as botched, did little or nothing to dampen the present level of enthusiasm for that machine. So although the PS3's launch numbers are even more limited than Microsoft's, even if it goes down in history as a debacle, it probably couldn't derail enthusiasm for the machine next year - by all accounts, a magnificent machine that raises the bar on aesthetics in gaming, and also serves as the centerpiece for high-definition home entertainment.
Yet with the company having said it might only have produced 400,000 units for launch in Japan and North America today, and some analysts fearing that number could actually be as low as 150,000, one wonders if those lines of people that made the front pages of newspapers and the promo beds of newscasts might not disappear after today. At a local Best Buy store in Indianapolis, for example, where no violence took place, a line of 42 people had been assembled for reportedly over 24 hours, to receive guarantee tickets for the purchase of 28 units shipped. Many of those turned away told reporters they'd be back tomorrow.
But that Best Buy probably won't be getting another 28 units tomorrow, or the next day, or maybe even the next week - managers could not say.
In response to our story yesterday on iSuppli's PS3 teardown analysis, a reader who works at a Futureshop retail outlet told us yesterday his store was slated to receive ten units, though there were already 15 customers camped outside his store. "Of course we can't tell customers that," our reader wrote.
"To any of you planning on waiting outside Best Buy, Wal-Mart (if they didn't do preorders), Futureshop, Blockbuster, wherever," he continues, "Yes, I realize you can easily eBay it back for double the value, even triple to some very rich kid, but if there's already 15-20 people waiting there, chances are half of them aren't even getting one. Please, take my advice. Don't bother."
While Sony has publicly predicted it will sell one million PS3s worldwide before March, the company has declined to comment on whether it intends to produce one million units before that time.
Big lines have always been part of the self-promotional mechanism behind a big, new product launch, as toy manufacturer Fisher-Price proved in 1996 when it reaped back well more than it had paid to wrest the lucrative Sesame Street contract from Playskool, by engineering a tremendously successful limited launch of the "Tickle Me, Elmo" doll. Since then, big launch parties and limited supply quantities have regularly been carefully and meticulously arranged in order to drive sales through "viral marketing" - customers exciting one another into making early purchases, for fear the opportunity to meet the Christmas deadline won't come around again.
But Sony's current limitation on PS3 quantities aren't by choice; it would easily have preferred to produce far more - enough for the console to have launched in Europe this week as well as North America and Japan. If campers outside retailers stay huddled outside - even if only a few - for days on end, and sporadic violence continues here and there around the US and Canada, and eBay prices continue to soar into the stratosphere, Sony's inability to supply its customers could remain a news item well into next week, perhaps generating a kind of viral marketing meltdown.
In which case, there could possibly emerge from this episode a sort of launch party burnout, at least for the next few years, on the part of companies hoping to avoid the appearance of trying to replay a failing scenario.
It's at this point that Sony must invest more than its faith, but perhaps more effort, behind the production and distribution of something consumers have shown little of in recent years: faith itself, that the product will eventually be here, and that its ingenuity and capacity for excellence will have been worth the wait.

I didnt know that 500 + 200 = 2000.. Thats some good math there buddy
oh and btw nexgenwars.com are estimates of worldwide number of consoles SOLD.
So given that fact..
88,000 PS3 sold in japan
700 between HK/Taiwan
= 88,700 consoles.
269644 posted on genwars as the PS3 total worldwide
So it would say acording that source that 180944 were sold in the US. Which doesnt seem so unlikely at all given the fact that Analysts have been saying the past few days that the PS3 launch in the US was probably less than half the projected 400k units.

Isn't Blu-Ray's inclusion into the PS3 the reason it's so expensive in the first place? You cannot gain product loyalty by cramming it down people's throats. Plus, without that special coating on it, your disc is stratched even with a hairline and it's done. When Blockbuster and Hollywood Video start carrying them for rental, good luck watching one after the first week or so because the coating will be gone, then the disc will be toast.

I bet the Blu-Ray camp is not too happy about that since BD movie sales haven't budged since the PS3 release but everybody who is buying the HD-DVD add on are also buying HD-DVD movies.
The PS3 has turned into a complete joke because nobody actually wants one to play games. It's just an eBay money making fiasco.
Sony isnt too happy that nobody is actually covering news stories about the gameplay, just the eBay stories and people waiting in line talking about selling them on eBay.
I did see one story about Ridge Racer, the graphics are very glitchy in certain parts of the game. They showed some screen shots, but they don't know if it's the software or the player. Other people were reporting similar problems with RR on the PS3.
Sorry Mark and Dave, your dreams of the PS3 saving Blu-Ray are probably not going to happen, since the consoles are just changing hands to the next highest bidder. They say the game to console sales ratio is right around 0.94 and the Blu-Ray movie to console ratio is 0.02 which means about 2 out of every 100 PS3's sold left with a BD movie.
I guess you will be getting that HD-DVD player after all. Sony is already considering changing the name of the console to BS3.

|Picking a Winner
If one format wins, a number of experts predict it will be Blu-ray due to its higher number of manufacturing and content partners.
Forrester Research analyst Ted Schadler said in a research note on October 5, 2006, that Blu-ray will win out because it has more support, with over 100 manufacturers compared to HD-DVD's 10. According to Schadler, Dell, Apple and Sony will ship PCs with Blu-ray drives. HD-DVD has Toshiba in the PC fold. "This deeper support will translate into a broader assortment of products, more retail shelf space and a bigger marketing budget," he said, adding that the Playstation 3 will also make inroads for Blu-ray.

Come and see me after the holidays, the sales figures will tell the story. As you can see, right now BD isn't even close to HD-DVD in movie sales. You know, the thing that actually generates revenue for either format.
I don't care how many "players" are floating around because of the PS3. I'll have both formats covered anyways. The good news is if BD tanks, I still have a game system.
If HD-DVD tanks *not likely*, all I will have invested is 200 dollars and another game system. I want the flexibility to buy any game or movie I please.

With a little patience, the "improved" version of PS3 will be well worth the wait. Meanwhile Sony is still working with SOME backwards compatibility issues. This is not picking on Sony. PS3 and XBOX 360 both have excellent offerings. Never buy the first year's new of a car, never install the first version of a new OS (unless it's non-production), etc. Let someone else go through the frustrations of returning the first release of PS3. |Two weeks you say? Dream on. There will be a severe shortage of the console for many, many months to come. Do you honestly believe the Americas and Japan will be getting plenty more of them, considering they can't even launch the console at all in Europe and Australia?
People may have had all year to buy a 360, but many were hoping to grab PS3 at launch, and of course had no such luck. The main reason people were tripping over each other trying to get one is because the PS3 was the most hyped up (and delayed) console in history. I'm sure if I developed some new high tech turd and kept making big announcement about it, while delaying it for months on end, there would be hundreds of people lining up to buy one once it was released.
Just because a small percentage of hardcore Sony fans are willing to wait YET ANOTHER YEAR for wide availability, doesn't mean the majority of those who wanted a PS3 will wait too. Once the Sony zealots have their fill and the holidays are over, expect sales of the console to drop drastically. Oh wait, that would only be a realistic prediction if they actually had consoles to sell.
Most people are not hardcore Sony fans and already realized that 95% of the games coming out for the next generation consoles will be on both the PS3 and 360. It's a no brainer. Why wait for a PS3 when you can buy a cheaper console now and get all the same games? Not everyone's willing to swallow all the BS Sony is shoving down our throats. The days when Sony had many highly desirable exclusive titles are long gone. Even their (un)official mascot, Crash Bandicoot has been whoring itself on every console.

Now, I'd love to hear you name a single game that's going to need 50GB of storage. Or even 25GB for that matter. I don't mean a game where Sony puts a bunch of extra junk on the disc (like they're doing with the movie Click! by putting uncompressed PCM on there) to make it look like having 50GB space matters.
Don't assume bigger is better. I've been around long enough to know that the size of a game has absolutely no bearing on how fun the game actually is. So just because a Sony fanboy like yourself is staining his pantaloons over the prospects of some crappy game taking up 50GB, most people don't care. They only care about one thing; whether the game is fun or not.
That being said, even if a really good game happens to come along that needs an enormous amount of storage (highly unlikely), what's stopping them from releasing it on multiple discs? It's never been a problem in the past and printing media is dirt cheap now. You're just using typical Sony fanboy mantality. Sony 25/50GB = Good. Microsoft 9GB = Bad. If the game sucks (95% of them do) it doesn't matter if it's 5GB or 500GB. Let me guess, next you're going to argue that your fat a** is too lazy to get off the couch and change the disc, right?

ALL 1080p signals coming in are converted to 1080i period. The 1080p myth is great because it sells TV, next gen DVD players and game consoles but it means nothing.
Your 1920 x 1080 display can only show 1080i/30, not actual 1080p. That's why a good 1080i signal looks better than a 1080p, there is no conversion, th TV can actually display the 1080i as is on the screen.

If you have a TV Which does not do 720P (virtually non-existent in Europe), then it will downscale to 480p rather than upscale to 1080i
So this is ONLY an issue if you have a TV that does 1080i but not 720p, and this is mainly CRT HD sets (which are not really HD, as CRT by nature is analog, so no HDMI, and no HDMI means not HD-Ready logo complaince)

|Do more research Hollywood. Nice FUD though.
First, you would NOT see pretty bad flicker at 24Hz. In fact, Star Wars attack of the clones was filmed entirely at 1080p24. Odd, considering how blown up on a movie screen (with 1080p projectors), I don't recall anyone complaining of flicker.
Secondly, 1080p TV's deinterlace 1080i to 1080p, not the other way around, especially if it's a LCD/Plasma TV. The entire picture needs to be redrawn on every refresh, not half of it as would be with 1080i. In fact cinematic film that has been converted from 1080p to 1080i for transmission can be easily (trivial) be covertted back into a TRUE 1080p again in most cases.
Lastly, thanks for playing, but I have a 1080p screen, and it works very well thank you. In fact, I have my computer hooked up to it displaying 1920x1200 (It's native resolution), and it looks great. The DVI/HDMI cable is capable of supporting this resolution just fine.

Those that react the way you do obviously haven't spent much time with a 360 or are blinded by Sony faboyism.

|It still amazes me how people get hyped up about something every year just because "it's the cool thing this year." Watching people on the news standing outside overnight in the freezing cold just seems pathetic. It seems as though there are 3 different people that contribute to this "standing outside overnight" phenomenon. 1) People truly are PS3 enthusiast 2)People want to buy this so they can make a quick buck reselling this on eBay and 3)People that want it just because it's the "new thing." I saw something someone posted earlier about how Sony should just charge more for the first few weeks so people don't resell this on eBay for triple the price. I agree with that because it seems as though most people fall within category 2 above. Sony should capitalize on those early adopters that are willing to pay more and let the people that really want it either pay more or wait until the price drops as production increases. I don't know..just some thoughts that went through my head...

|It's the "I want my family to see I have a PS3 on Thanksgiving" syndrome for the people who are paying the crazy prices.
These are the same people who buy plasmas because "they're cool" and don't know how bad and inaccurate the colors really are. They just want to show off like a plasma is some sort of status symbol.
One idiot on CNN said, "I'm supposed to be at work so if my boss sees me, I'll get fired. But it's worth it for PlayStation 3". The funny part is, he was like 500th in line at a Wal-Mart. That's the mentality of this country, showing off to make strangers think you're cool.
Most of the people who were in tents and actually got there first got screwed anyways because the parking lot filled with cars and everyone made a mad dash when the doors opened.
Only one store by me had police officers making sure the idiots who got there at at midnight and thought they were going to get a PS3 were told to leave immediately. They handed out numbers earlier in the day and told everyone to go home and come back at midnight and sent everyone else away as they arrived. They only had two dozen PS3's anyways.
People were actually crying, pinning their hopes on making a fortune on eBay. If you want to call $3000.00 a fortune.

|When the 360 came out, I didn't rush to buy one. I happened to be in a local store a day later looking at HDTV and saw they had some systems left. A quick look on Ebay showed them to be fetching double the retail price. So I bought one and Ebayed it. Sure enough, I got double the price. Put the money in the bank and left it there. 6 months later, went to a shop now there were plenty and bought myself one. End result? In effect, a free Xbox 360. Cheers.

|Of course Sony will sell every PS3 it produces, but Sony doesn't want to produce them. Imagine taking a 300 dollar hit on every console you sell. There isn't a lot of incentive for them to produce them quickly except trying to rack up some Blu-Ray movie sales.
I read they sold slightly more consoles than games in Japan, 94 out of 100 consoles left with a game purchase. I dont think the PS3 is going to save Blu-Ray. My local Best Buy said not one customer left with a Blu-Ray movie and most didn't even buy a game.
I'm sure Sony doesn't like the fact the only reason why people 90% of the people want the PS3 in the first place is to resell it. Most are around $2400.00 on eBay. Not one news show actually showed anyone taking theirs home and hooking it up, they all showed people saying how they were going to list it on eBay as soon as they got home.
One guy said, he was going to eat, shower, sleep, then hook it up and play some games. This is as bad as the Elmo fiasco a few years back, people were paying 400 dollars for one of those annoying things.
Could you imagine sitting in front of your PS3 a year from now, thinking "I paid $3000.00 for that thing".
Sad.
And to think, people were worried this would put a dent in HD-DVD sales.
