DivX Offers Video Software for Free

By Nate Mook | Published September 29, 2005, 11:42 AM

DivX is taking a page from Opera's playbook, celebrating its fifth anniversary by giving away its $19.99 DivX Create Bundle at no cost. The package features tools for the creation of DivX video files, including encoders and the ability to make interactive menus with the DivX Media Format.

The free Create Bundle offer is valid only for one day, and requires an e-mail address that will be sent the DivX registration code. The code is not a trial and will never expire, the company says. As DivX 6 is not yet available for Mac, only Windows 2000 and XP users can take advantage of the deal.

Happy Birthday and thanks for free software!

Funny thing is that there was never a mention about a free giveaway and as soon as notice got out and flooded thier servers, its like "OMG we need to shut this down!" So comes the notice that @ 10 am the 24 hour free giveaway is over. What a CROCK. Personally there are better progz that do that and more. Oh yeah, did any of you that posted here know about this on Weds. and get it?

From the website:

"The DivX anniversary offer was launched on Wednesday, September 28th and ended 10am Thursday morning. Thanks to everyone who downloaded the free software bundle and joined in our celebrations."

The offer ended almost two hours before I could have read this story =(

Oh well. I can't complain about not getting free software. Give it to me now! Free! lol jk

I guess I got lucky, because I did receive my serial within less than two minutes, using a gmail junk account (so I don't care if they ever send me any junk mail).

I'm expecting DivX 7.0 to appear RSN, which will require a new serial number :P But still DivX6 for free is a very good bargain for anyone serious about encoding his personal videos.

PS: I think I first heard about the offer on another news site, might be why I got there early enough to get it.

Yep... The good people over at DivX were looking to make more money! Although the video converter is a "generous" free download, they neglected to tell you that if you want to convert your DVDs to DivX files (let's face it - the main use for DivX), you need to pay them for the MPEG2 Plugin.

Sounds strangely familliar... You need to pay for Apple's Quicktime Pro, and they make you buy an extra MPEG2 plugin as well.

And my serial isn't through yet either. You could all email them and complain, only won't that extra email traffic just delay them more when sending the stuff out?

1. they....were giving away THEIR software, and its not THEY who own rights to mpeg2, thats why they would actually lose money giving it away with the plugin, its like givin away $ bills appart from letting ppl download from you.

2. need the plugin, just crack it!-))

3. the only good use i can find for this converter is to convert other video files to divx, so ma dvd playa can read it, ripping dvds is better with dvd shrink and dvd decrypter. I dont see the point in converting:-)

3.5. if you dont got a dvd burner, get one, best investment ever.

To be fair, all encoding software that deals with MPEG2 has to buy a costly licence for it, so I would rather developers made it an extra cost, as DivX do, and let me 'opt in' if I want.

Hey not to worry, the site says they're doing it again in 2010!

Bit of a pointless PR exercise, doing a giveaway that has ended by the time most people hear about it.

Unfortunately several sites, like betanews, only found our offer towards the end of the one-day giveaway. This was partly because we didn't actually do this as a PR excersise - we didn't contact a single news site about it. DivX was simply celebrating its anniversary. However, by the time the day ended literally hundreds of thousands of people had participated.

There will always next year (we hope!) ;)

Actually, I don't need a licence. I have a full, paid and proper registration for Divx. What a pity the licence manager is so badly-coded and paranoically restrictive that I have to use pirate installs to get it running at all.

Here is their response....

Dear DivX User,

We apologize for any delay in receiving your FREE serial number. Our mail servers have been working like CRAZY this past 24 hours to handle all of you guys :)

Don't worry, you will get your email with a serial number, but it is just taking a little bit longer. It could take up to 2 days before your receive your serial number. So please be patient and give us until beginning next week before you come harass our Support Team for a serial number :)

Enjoy!

DivX Team

They replied in 30 minutes, i should check my email more often.

"So please be patient and give us until beginning next week before you come harass our Support Team"

i belive my email was more of a polite inquiery, rather than harassment, theyr probably just realy stressed with all the traffik.

I was able to download but still no serial #'s I was able to download the exe file at approximately 12:15 pm DST. I emailed the link to my friend at that time and the link said the offer had ended. What was up with that?

Here is a post from the DivX forum General Discussion:

The anniversary giveaway has ended, thanks to everyone who joined in our celebrations!

Still waiting for your free serial number? Our giveaway was so popular that there is a large backlog in our mail servers. If you entered a valid e-mail address we will be continuing to send out serial numbers over the next two days. Remember that if you use an e-mail service with mail filtering your serial number may have been diverted into a bulk mail folder.

Like some of the others here, I was able to access their site for the free download. So far I haven't received a registration code email. But did find a torrent file with a keygen. Maybe DivX will come through with the codes or extend the offer to avoid bad public relations?

i think thats just there because thats the same product description they used before this offer, im guessing the only reason no one recieved their free serial yet is because they probably just cant cope with the traffic, altho if thats the case they should inform people. ive contacted them on the issue, waiting for a reply now.

Serial numbers are still being sent right now, the mail servers are very heavily loaded. Check your bulk mail folders to make sure the message hasn't been filtered out by your e-mail service provider.

The serial number you get activates the registered version of DivX Pro and DivX Converter, removing the trial limitations.

Hi guys,

Our mail servers are still churning them out. Make sure to check your bulk/junk mail folders, and try temporarily turning off any mail filters your service provider has to make sure you get the e-mail.
