DoS Flaw Found in Windows XP, Server
By the Betanews Staff | Published June 2, 2006, 1:12 PM
Security firm Secunia warned Thursday of a new flaw within Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 that could cause a denial of service issue. The vulnerability can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow, which in turn would cause Windows to crash. Labeled as a "less critical" vulnerability, the flaw could be used to execute arbitrary code, but Secunia was unable to prove that in tests.
Microsoft said that it was investigating the issue, however was not aware of any attack vectors that attempt to exploit the problem. "The vulnerability has been confirmed on a fully patched system with Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and Microsoft Windows 2003 Server," Secunia wrote in its advisory. It is unclear if Microsoft plans to address the flaw on its next Patch Tuesday, scheduled for June 13.

Is there not one in your bunch of expert technicians and administrators who could give a somewhat in depth comment to this article?

What has happened to you all? Got too bored? Don't have any experience with this?
A pity. I was looking forward for some kind of experienced comment, which you usually give in a really interesting way, and which I usually respect and profit from a lot.

|O.K. lets ruffle some feathers. Not to long ago Cnet put the new Intel Duo MacBook against a regular boring Windows XP laptop. Both laptops were evenly matched except the MacBook had a higher memory speed, 666MHz to 566MHz of the Acer. And what do you know, even with the Intel chip they still lost to Windows XP. And of course the only thing they outscore the Acer with was the beauty contest. But they got their a$$e$ kicked in every single performance category, which is the only thing that matters to non Apple users. The only thing they almost won was the Serenson Squeeze Video. 4.12 to 4.41min and this was while running Windows XP. And the same test took OS X 25 Minutes to complete. Now I’m really looking forward to the excuses why Mac got pummeled.

You do understand what non-native intel applications are right?
Acer's benchmarks reflect intel-native (optimised for intel PCs) applications so OFCOURSE the intel optimised would run faster!

|Maybe I have filtered vision, but I almost never see PC users attacking macs. I see them showing benchmarks and tests that refute Mac users claims to superiority...but even then, they are usually responding to mac zealots, or at worst trying to beat them to the punch.
The problem I observe is that most mac users take any criticism (honest or not) of their OS personally...they just have to believe their mac is the best there is. PC users acknowledge their OS is flawed (to be fair how can we not), but feel the higher level of compatibility and larger software library compenstate for that.
And knowledgable PC users know they can compensate for almost all OS flaws with trustworthy 3rd party software, vigilance, and safe practices.
I myself feel use what you like...and don't try to convert me. I have used OS X, several versions of windows, dabbled with couple versions of Linux, even played around with BeOS; and still find Windows is the best fit for my everyday use.

O&O Defrag.
Why, do you ask?
All are simple. All require little to no user intervention. All can be used by virtually *anyone* with little to no understanding of windows.
...but most of all, because they work.
The first and last require no intervention at all, and are simply set-it-and-forget-it utilities. They will do the work for you without pestering you or sucking up precious system resources.
The second one could not *be* any easier. Throw the "1 Click Maintenance" Icon on the desktop and tell the user to click it once a day. When it's done, click "Correct Problems" and "finish".
Like I said, requires no technical know-how whatsoever.
These apps are purchased for every PC I own, and recommend them to every client I work with.
(I have been known to swap O&O with the default windows defrag utility and a scheduled task, but it just doesn't work for folks who shut their systems off overnight.)
