Doom 3 Leaks Out

Multiple sources have confirmed that retail versions of Doom 3, the latest incarnation of id Software's Doom saga, have leaked to the Web. However, software pirates who download Doom 3 may be in for a surprise when the game fails to install on their system, as the hardware requirements are substantial.
I, like many other people, pre-ordered Doom 3 and am waiting eagerly for it to arrive. I already have a leaked copy and this has served to reiterate the fact that I will certainly NOT be cancelling my order. This game is truly amazing and is definitely worth more than the £24.99 I have paid for it.
It's clear how much work has gone into Doom 3 and I find it a shame that some people will use this as an opportunity to avoid paying for one of the few PC games that really excels.

|I agree with Scripptee, its very sad. Illegal downloads of a clas game by toons (some) who will now never buy it, instead there ripping it.
Very sad

|With the amount of people downloading it I dont think they are going to buy the game, and considering ID took 4 years to write the game it is very sad. I mean how would you feel if you took 4 years to make something, use the best CD protection (although not that good) and people still just say bugger off I'm not paying for that?

|Doom 3 can be found on more than 50 IRC networks. It is all over the place now man! Phenomenon!

|in my opinion if someone wants to download something instead of buying it then its their own problem; they are dishonest and gain bad karma for it, thats enough. I too download torrents occasionally, and if I either like the game or finish it I will go out and but it so support the people that worked the hours to make it.
Everyone rambles on about how dissapointing Doom 3 is, but its awsome! How can you be dissapointed when you have been told the storyline as well ad shown exactly what the ingame graphics are like! FFS!
Doom 3 is the best game I've played.

|So what if D3 leaked to the web... Its not the first game that leaks and in the next 10 years it won't be the last.... Jeez you guys are getting the same sickness Slashdot has been having for a while... Stick to what you know and leave rumors and ramblings to lamer websites.
Further on, I myself downloaded the torrent. I have a couple of good reasons to have gotten the leak... Number one even though I consider my PC to be pretty much high end, D3 has this thing that my PC might have not had the guts to run it. I found out that it does run it very well. My PC is a AMD Athlon 2800XP w/1.5gb DDR 400 Ram, ATI 9600 Pro and Audigy 2 Soundcard. I have 7.1 speakers to boot. Second, D3 isn't that far fetched into being impossible to run. Here is a tweak I recommend you doing if you want to grab better framerates and faster gameplay:
Go into /base inside the Doom3 folder, there find a file called, DoomConfig.cfg and inside that file find a setting called seta image_cacheMegs. This setting depending on your computer can have a setting of "32" or "20". If you have 512mb of Ram or more, I recommend you raising this value to "256".
On my system I have it set like this: seta image_cacheMegs "256" the performance this brought to the overall gameplay was earth to heaven. Enourmous. Im also using a windows Accelerator called Hare 1.5.1 (which you can also get it leaked from the web...). My PC is running Doom 3 at Ultra high, with 1024x78 and I have from 30 to 40 fps.
On the other hand, I think id misued its own engine. The game has a dark setting and true, for the first 15 minutes of the game you get creamed in your pants. But then its the same old, boring, looking to kill hellspawn... After killing the first 2 bosses, It has gotten quite repetitive. The technology Carmack designed is awesome, don't get me wrong, but Doom 3, is not the game which will really wow you with it. Wait till the modders start working with the engine, and better scripted mods come out.
Frankly I think D3 is all hype. I have an inside source of Valve, as well as being on the team beta, that I can assure you, HL2 will be GOTY for PC, Doom 3 will have a technology mention... but its not GOTY...
My 02 cents. And yeah, if I can get a game leaked first, I will download it, if its good to have I will buy it, and if not, It will remain in my harddrive for a long time till I need more space.

|Dude, thats all crap. That doesnt work at all. How did you make this one up? Can you prove it somehow that it worked for you? cuz i dont buy it.

|It does run......when betanews says it fails to intall on a system with lower requirements is incorrect. I can play the game, just is gonna take some tweaking to improve the low framerate.

|here's a smart idea, announce something is leaked on the web, that way everyone interested that didn't know it was available will download it instead of buying it...

|I for one download 'Beta's' and if I like it, I go and buy it, nothing better than having a real copy... but I have gone and purchased a game £30 only to find its crap and NO refund. So good on the guys who help us save money but also assist us in what to spend it on... Quote for the day? 'Piracy is really a test drive'

|Every time a popular game hits the stores or before it hits the shelves, it will always get leaked out. Activision should be happy that it didn't leak earlier.
Most of those who downloaded the game will never bother buying it anyway. It's wrong for the industry to calculate losses like this. This is what RIAA does calculating 1 song as a album and making up billions of dollars of loss.

|whoopie fookin do... it's been offered on thousands of Bittorrent trackers.. I already downloaded with the crack and it runs perfectly.
Even got the private server crack that allows me to play with private D3 servers..

|C'mon betanews, you know better.
Every single game 'leaks out' on the net, it's been what, 3 days? If people are smart enough to get it, don't you think they know the requirements?
This is a mere copy of the BBC article:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3527332.stm
Betanews, stick to what you're good at, don't go with all the media trying to publicize warez, it's there and you won't change that.
Extreme hardware requirements won't, either.

|I'm with c0ldfusi0n on this one.
If you can download the game using p2p protocalls and are smart enough to operate some of the newer more advanced programs, most people would know a little bit about their hardware configuration if they can do that.

|I don't mind pirating an incomplete game. Maybe if they would have included the co op I'd shell out 60 bucks for it. As it stands that will only be available on the x-box version (or consoles only versions, not sure which).
They're also going to make at least 1/2 a million off of it which should be enough to line their pockets.
Score: 0
|Well... no... not really, because it cost them $20-30 million dollars to make the thing. Plus there are Activision's marketing costs, etc.
I do think that BetaNews should have put a disclaimer or something up though, otherwise it looks as if they're encouraging it.

|Yeah, well whatever it costs to make the game, Id will make back over 10 fold. The thing is...is that Doom3 is going to be such a money making machine, that saying that they are going to lose money from downloaders is ridiculous. Their figure isn't even right, the first week where the game makes the most dollars usually, 2.7 million dollars in losses eh? Yeah right, calculate all the sales in the first month at retail locations and the figure isn't that high in losses as the figure that was given.
Doom3 will not only license their engine out to other companies, but become a movie franchise in the near future as their has been heavy rumblings in the film industry over the adaptation of the game. The game will also speed the evolution of the computing industry with it's high standards and all the people purchasing more parts for their pc to play the game with it's current requirements. Doom3 is the Jesus of computer games, it will no doubt make tons of sums of dough and announcing the losses on file-sharing networks is pretty ridiculous.
