Download Windows 2000 SP2 Beta
By Nate Mook | Published December 14, 2000, 4:10 PM
UPDATE - Microsoft has pulled the Service Pack, sorry! Microsoft has seemingly posted a beta of Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000. Expected to ship Q1 2001, the second service pack offers many important hot fixes and updates into a 99.5MB bundle. BetaNews suggests waiting until the final release of the service pack, as past betas have been extremely problematic. Those brave enough however, may grab the upgrade from Microsoft's Premier download site and tell us the results below. The download is quite large, so be prepared to wait.
I had SP2 installed and uninstalled it, upon restart, the Passwords are NOT recognized anymore, I hope you guys have your system backed up or know how to reset the password, cuz I did not.
If someone knows, how to reset it, please let me know.

|I have 2 machines and other than the BID issue I havent noted a real barnstorm in either direction from sp2. I seems quite stable though , but that is from the standpoint of a late model machine in either case. coppermine/asus board/256mb crucial/micron pc-100/tekram/lvd-scsi/pure data-nic/standard crap. runs fine. I am leaving my 933 out of the loop until we move further down the road. We will see how it goes but the machines seem fine working together through belkin switch. I noted a little bit more of a bumpy ride through the switch than before but stable enough. I will see you guys when the news advances further.

|Working fine for me too. Things do seem to be a little speedier pulling up. Only problem I had was that CDROM access was unbearably slow after installing SP2. After checking out the properties, I noticed that MS added an option to specify your cdrom speed and for some reason it had defaulted to 1x. After switching it to 9x-20xCAV things were much better. I haven't tried my geforce 2 mx in the system yet to see if the lockups were fixed yet, Perhaps I will give it a try next weekend.

They pulled it, obviously they aren't confident to release it even to the beta testers yet; hence, why try and break your pc?

|We are relaxed my friend. We are just passing on what we are experiencing with this thing. Results will surely differ from system to system. All I am saying is that MY system experienced a tremendous boost in performance! No kidding! It could be a service pack, but a great one at that I might add. For my BX-440 shipset it was awesome. Now, for my brand new VP6 board, it remains to be seen. I will update the progress as I am installing the MOBO as I type this reply. BTW, sweet MOBO Abit came up with and it only cost me $160 from COMP-USA.
Imagine, 2.4Ghz of firepower with 1/2 GIG of PC-133 CAS-2 RAM!! WOW.
Salivate you guys, salivate !!!!

|I would imagine that these types of forums are havens for companies like Microsoft. The more people who download SP2, the more people who can offer their feedback about it. Granted, some feedback is useless, anyone willing to install a Beta like Win2kSP2 must have something to say about it.
Score: 0
|I don't think, that M$ must read Betanews etc., to get qualified feedback. ;-) If you have ever visited the Whistler Beta Page, you know, that technical Betatesters must make a survey for each installation and much more. People, who downloaded internal Betas from warez sites can't (or won't) do this. But a problem is, that some webpages, who post the old link to SP2-files last week, did'nt write, that it's an internal beta build. So people must assume, that's the final SP2 from M$. I won't know, which of them have troubles with their systems now (and normaly would never install a buggy beta).

Network ice will move quickly only when it becomes official on sp2 being released. I have been waiting to see if they invite me again when they start preparing. No apparent problems although it hasn't been long enough to be conclusive on the 2.1.56/58 version yet. Once properly motivated though they do a jam up job. Sp1 saw a much improved Blackice setup with a smooth shutdown and install. If you can get them on it , they do quality work. I guess until big brother goes official that anyone with sp2 beta up is just in limbo though.

|I have used 3com 10/100 and pure data 10/100 cards and pretty much even genius ethernet jumpered 10 base cards even. I havent found any issues with any of those . even a crappy old smc 10base card worked hehe. Good luck though . win2k will run a compatibilty hardware and software check on your machine and save a printable text of all issues the opener might have. I would suggest uninstalling blackice and reinstalling and acrobat reader . It will tell you if it has a problem. If you migrate it will keep some of 98 and retain the windows folder along with the winit folder. also in migration it mixes the 98 feel with 2000. I preferred a clean install after migrating the first time. LOL. out with old in with the new. prepare by stashing .dat email ,bookmarks ,etc. on another drive . If you are installing to an ide drive just unpartition and repartition disk 0 in the start and let it reboot and format in ntfs. It likes it : )
You will have a choice of dynamic or basic format of ntfs. I just chose basic and it has always worked well. I want to watch the progress of the dynamic set for a while before I take a full plunge.
you can leave any or all of the other drives in fat32 until you feel safe and can juggle the data. also any drive letter juggling can easily be done through start /control panel/administrative tools/disk management logged in as administrator. Nice OS and rock solid . I have one up with sp1 and another running sp1/sp2_beta . comparing them trying to see what I like. also after doing the sp2 beta dont go to the update page hehe. It will try to install a critical service update as far as I know that will fail . I think it has to do with the 128bit encryption in the beta that is irreversable . enjoy and I hope I have helped. |Windows 2000 has never been buggier. I can't count how many system crashes I've experienced since installing the RC of SP2. It's got to be over 20 - and I've had the thing installed less than 12 hours. Nothing but problems with Easy CD Creator 4.02e, and DirectCD 3.01e. Everything ELSE seems to work fine, I'll admit, but this thing isn't worth even the 15 minutes it took me to download it (thank god for broadband, at least :)). Hopefully they'll eliminate the incompatibilities with Roxio software before they release this set of "fixes" (although the original Windows 2000 broke EZCD/DCD, too).

|Basically the problem was with one of my CD-RWs that is in less-than-tip-top shape. I had tried to add something to it, and the import session was screwing up. It just wouldn't import it. Had some corrupt files on the disk - ended up MANUALLY copying the good stuff to a folder on my desktop, re-downloading the bad stuff, and erasing and reburning the sucker. THAT worked.
Also, the problems I think I was having were from installing the Roxio patches in the wrong order. The last time I used it, it worked (crossing fingers that it will still work in a little bit).
