Eager Fans Await Halo 3 Release
By Tim Conneally | Published September 24, 2007, 12:03 PM
Halo 3, undoubtedly the most anticipated title for the Xbox 360 -- and perhaps of all time -- will be finally available tonight. More than 10,000 stores will be opening their doors at midnight to sell the game, which is expected to break all sales records and become the biggest interactive entertainment launch in history.
Considering Halo 3 has already become the fastest pre-selling game in history, tonight's launch is less of a beginning, and more the continuation of the snowball crashing down the mountain that is the Halo franchise. What began in 2001 as a video game sensation has grown into a full-scale cultural phenomenon, including graphic novels, a major motion picture, action figures, and even soft drinks (i.e., Mountain Dew "Game Fuel").
Marquee launch events are taking place in New York, Seattle, Los Angeles and Miami tonight, with contests and appearances by local celebrities and professional athletes who also happen to be Halo fans. A list of retailers who will be opening tonight for the launch is listed on the Xbox 360 site.
Whether the hour of release is a matter of hype, or a matter of making the launch easier on retailers and customers has yet to be seen. Perhaps it's a combination of the two.
Halo is overrated. FPS do not belong on a console, its blasphemy. If you play a FPS with a controller you should be smacked. Now Halo 1 and 2 are pretty nice on a PC I must admit.

Going to pick up my copy today after work... If I can find it.

Well, so far the early reviews are overwhelmingly positive, as expected.

I beat that game several months ago. What's with all the hype? The only memorable part was that it had Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Alba making out. I blew a few circuits below the utility belt from that scene, but otherwise, it was kind of boring.

And they called pitdingo a troll?
Score: 0
Pitdingo has a love affair with hating anything that has Micorsofts name on it. He makes stupid statements like that when ever he can. None of the Xbox fans here deny that the Wii is a fun system but he posts on. He is like the PS3 fanboys that believe that if a game is not made for his loved system then it totally sucks. Not even accepting that other platforms have games worth playing is just stupidity.

Possibly, if the recent release of Halo 2 is any indication, and the delayed release of CE as well (which wasn't all that great on the PC, unfortunately).
They want to capitalize of the sales of the console version as much as possible, which is understandable (but still sucks).

I didn't really care about this launch, but all day everyone's been talking about it. The radio's buzzing, even my father emailed me from his work about some new "halo dealy".
Now I want it godammit. What the hell has my PS3 done for me :(. I'm sure this will be a great game like the last 2.

I think that was one of the reasons I finally purchased an iPod, and will probably get an iPhone as soon as more work is done to its capabilities. I'm getting sick of everyone wondering when I'm getting one. "Shut up already!" LOL
I'll wait until the craze subsides before I pick up my copy of Halo 3. I've got the new Guild Wars expansion on the PC still keeping me occupied... and Guitar Hero, of course.

From what I have read, HALO 3 may be a PS3 killer. Well played.
I guess Lair was going to be the breakout game for the PS3, but it has been touted as a "beautiful disaster". Great graphics, but the control and gameplay is awful.

Well, for the most part I agree with him... at least so far as certain genres are concerned. With FPS games, my platform of choice will always be the PC. :)

if they ever come out with a wireless mouse and keyboard for the 360 for playing fps's i'll get one but until then or vista kills pc gaming for good i'll stick with my pc
Score: 0
i'd venture a guess that most of the draw for fps games on consoles is that the hardware is balanced and not the limiting factor making it more "fair," unlike pc games. yes, fine, we get it. mouse + keyboard = super fast spin moves and better aiming. analog sticks have an annoying dead zone. aside from that, consoles are the shiz. on that note, i once saw a console controller concept with a trackball in place of one of the analog sticks. brilliant concept. wish they could have made it work. that would have been fragtastic.
Score: 0
Id have to disagree. Ive always had a better experience with FPS on consoles.
Score: 0
What are you disagreeing to? I didn't say "the" platform of choice... I said "my" platform of choice. It's just my opinion and personal preference. :)
(EDIT: If you weren't referring to me, I sincerely apologize. Appearing rude was not my intent.)
I guess there are a lot of factors to consider when trying to figure out people's preference of FPS games on consoles. Some were excellent, such as GoldenEye on the N64. Some, not so much... just poor ports of their PC counterparts most of the time.
Consoles are much more convenient when organizing an impromptu gaming session. No mucking about with tons of configuration options can be a boon if you don't necessarily care for any of that crap. Also, since the particular game was designed for a particular hardware configuration that is static, the game can (and should) be expected to run well every time.
The relatively low price of (some) consoles can be a large factor, too. Most households have at least one computer, a fair portion of which have upgradeable video card slots. For the price range that the Xbox 360 currently sells for, a very nice video card could be purchased to give the same level (or better) of graphics potential to already existing hardware. Mom and Dad's e-mail and finance PC just became something more. :)
I have to say though, I've been to a lot of LAN parties in the past decade... some I've organized myself, others more high-profile such as Lanwar / MML. I have to say that never have I seen anyone using consoles for anything other than something like DDR. With the exception of a few quick sessions of Warcraft III or C&C, it was mostly FPS. I'm not sure how much that has changed recently, though.
Not necessarily wanting to get into a p!ssing contest about PC vs Console (that's been done to death)... but nothing compares to the graphical horsepower and sheer flexibility and ultimate control of a properly configured high-end gaming PC for FPS games (a genre where speed and performance matters most).
Score: 0
I agree to the point, if there is a PC version the console version never lives up to it. UT was imho a very good example of this.
Otherwise FPS can be pretty inovative if its designed purely to play on the console :)

Except, I'm not sure if it will last, but it definitely adds a unique gaming experience.
I almost feel sorry for POS3 owners, as they have nothing to play on their boxes... except those BlueRay movies.. and they can play linux.. for whatever that's worth...

Hey Dave, you seem to know everything about the PS3. When are they going to allow blacker than black to pass over HDMI on this thing?
I am getting tired of "dark grey" for black, the only movie I own on BD is Casino Royale and I swear the standard DVD looks better when it comes to black.

It's a Saturday Night Live skit where Christopher Walken played the part of Iron Maiden's Bruce D ickinson. He was producing the next single for the Blue Oyster Cult... (Don't Fear) The Reaper. Jordanr05,
I am ISF certified, it's not my projector or DLP rear projection. I do have seperate video adjustments for each input on both but even with the calibration disc, I cant get the black level right.
The HDTV Calibration Wizard disc has a special section just for calibrating black levels quickly. There is a guy in a black shirt with black buttons, what you do is turn the brightness all the way down, at which point there are no details at all, the shirt, buttons and shiny parts of the fabric are jet black, or grey in this case.
You then turn up the brightness until the details start to come out and you can see all the different parts of the shirt. It works better than anything else I have seen short of the ISF calibration built in to Runco TV's.
What happens with the PS3 / BD is, you have to crank the brightness so high before the black details emerge, it's already dark grey and not black.
My HD-A2 has the same problem until the last firmware update allowed it to pass blacker than black over HDMI. So far the PS3 is a very cheap BD player and it shows.
Score: 0
The problem with contrast ratio measurements are they test the monitor with the power off and no backlight, then at pure white 6500K to get their measurements.
Contrast ratios mean nothing in the real world. If they tested them with the backlight on and all pixels black, then all white, the ratio is cut by a factor of ten.
