Exclusive: Winamp3 Shots Discovered

By Nate Mook | Published August 28, 2000, 8:32 PM

UPDATE: Nullsoft has taken down the shots. Sorry guys! - BetaNews has discovered screenshots of Nullsoft's upcoming Winamp3, codename Wasabi. The new look to Winamp is much more streamlined, yet leaves the original Winamp look and feel intact. Users will notice the addition of a visualization button on the player and a new still-unknown button next to shuffle. Winamp3 is still in beta with an expected release in the coming months. The team assures BetaNews it will be well worth the wait. What do you guys think?

Okay I am going to be patient with this thing - I think it looks quite promising, after all it's probably a very early beta that you saw...

But... If there is any ad in it, then I'm going to Sonique. Go ahead and advertise on the Nullsoft site but I'm not using a program with ads embedded in it.

If you look at the screen shots at http://users4.50megs.com/winamp/ you will see in the lower right hand side three little lines. Just like the ones on IE. Now if you look at the "unknown button" you will see that there are four arrows pulling each other in different directions. I think that is a resize toggle button. When on, the user will be able to resize the player/other windows (such as the Equalizer), when off, it might make the player un-sizeable and resets the window sizes to their default size.

Are a bunch of ****ing retards. First of all, the screenshots weren't supposed to be seen by the public yet. There should be _no_ judging whatsoever on what the final Winamp3 product will be this early in development, especially based off of you guys seeing some beta skin and saying "Oh, it's gonna suck. There's no changes." It's very beta, and you 'public' know nothing about what's being developed. Go read Nullsoft's own development page on Winamp3, then maybe you'll be a little more informed.

Second of all, all this Winamp vs. Sonique crap needs to stop right now. Use whatever you'd like to use. I personally prefer Winamp, as it's been around the longest, started the major trends in players, is reliable, and most of all, it's free. If you think Sonique is better, then more power to ya.

And third... where do you guys get off whining about AOL buying Nullsoft? Is the product still the same? Is it still free? Do you have the option of disabling AOL's desktop icon? The answer to all of those is "Yes". Would you rather have had Nullsoft start charging registration fees again to use their player?

Just think about things before you post them and look retarded, people. Wait for Winamp3, you won't be disappointed.

As some of you have noticed, in the 2.65 version of Winamp there is not an option to install an AOL Icon on your desktop.... how far will this go? How much AOL integration is in store for us in Winamp 3... its VERY apparent that the sellouts at Nullsoft are at AOL's command. Hopefully the AOL Icon is as far as AOL wants to take it. But i will not use Winamp if I am forced to look at AOL ads, popus, or whatever genious things they throw into it to make money.

I think that there is a reason to get upset, if Winamp totally sells out. Sure, it may be *just a player* to you, but to me, it is one of the best players out there that I have ever used. And it's free!

I started out with RealPlayer, and got sick and tired of all the prompts I got to buy the pro version, not to mention all the memory that piece of junk hogged up. Winamp is small fast and free, just as it advertizes. These are the reasons that I use it, and if I have to see those stupid-ass AOL advertizements or banners just to use Winamp, then I'll dump it for something else quicker than water gets wet.

Most MP3s are free, and a high-quality player such as Winamp should reflect that by being free of banners and adverts. Kripes, why do you think Winamp's as popular as it is?!?! IT'S FREE!

I don't give a damn what Real includes in their players, but as long as they charge for it, it will never be as great as Winamp is now. But since the premise is that Winamp's free, if Winamp goes back on that, I'll move to another player, such as CoolPlayer, or Quintessential.

Napster and Scour Exchange are unbelievably popular, and so is the present Winamp. Care to guess why? They are completely free and completely unnagged. And if they wish to keep their current popularity, they had better stay that way.

Because if they won't, I WILL move on. Guaranteed.

Peace.

Will it really kiss the llamas a** this time again?

WinAmp currently is a hassle-free, small, flawlessy made MP3 player. If you want to play music and go about your business, get WinAmp. If you want to play with pretty colored objects in various shapes get Sonique. Its just that simple. The only thing I'm looking forward to in WinAmp 3.0 is hotkey that automatically scans for all MP3s and randomly plays them without having to mess with that stupid playlist editor.

Score: 0

See this is where I disagree... Sure Sonique looks nice, but face it, it has a better equalizer, manages bass and treble MUCH better than Winamp, but does take s***loads of memory to do so...

What I wanna see in Winamp 3 is the flexibility of skins Kjofol has, a better EQ(One that doesn't garble sound when too high or not do anything when too low) and the base Winamp CPU/memory use... IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?! :p

The player skin looks ghetto, but I'll give them credit for the other skins, though. I wonder if Nullsoft's porgrammers were getting a litte high off the wasabi when they made Winamp 3? In any case, wasabi is da shiznat.

I agree. The "new" winamp 3 skin looks like crap, they was probably drunk when they made it, and will now stick to their horrendous mistake. Looks like a "flash back" to the 1950's.

So let's see here. They took a "futuristic" skin, and went back in time with it.. how pathetic..

Score: 0

It seems like Nullsoft has still not realized that people are looking for both custimzable players and well programed ones. More and more people are switching to Sonique a much more customizable and soon to be very well programed player with the coming of Sonique v2.0. In order for Winamp to overcome Sonique Nullsoft will have to make a player that is as customizable as is its prformance and add more attractive features to its player. To conclude it would seem that the public is more interested in the ease of use and skinability a player has to offer rather then the preforamnce and features the program has.

Score: 0

|

Well 1st off its great to finally see a new default skin!

Now as to the buttons, heres my stupid opinion :) they could be working on a way to make the buttons ajustable, like skinning, or possibly add several different layouts for the skin's to go on top of.

I'm hoping for comments :)

Still a good program to use, but my friends and I have been converging over to Sonique. We can't use Windows Media Player 7, why? because it takes up to much resources and usually brings your system to a crawl just to do some of the effects. Good program, but lacks a lot of things. I remember when Winamp used to charge money for their program, they have come a LONG way, and probably brought a large part of the public to listen to mp3's more pending they were the only company at the time to support it. Unfortunately, though they do have a very good program but the outer-shell of it (appearance) lacks greatly and needs to change. Lately, people(public) have not been going off of how good the program does the job, but also how good the program looks on their machine. Pending Winamp has stayed the same design since they started, when do think its time for it to change immensly. Its like trying to change the windows interface but you can't. When you can't change it you go to other programs, like Sonique (PC), which does the same as winamp but looks a lot better, also the same for Sound Jam(Macintosh). If winamp chooses to pry off the old mold and look of winamp then a good portion of the public might come back. But who knows, WinAmp 3 could be the deciding factor for a lot of people. We will just have to sit back and watch what the good programming and designing skills of the WinAmp team can do.

the 3rd button of unknown purpose looks alot like a crossfading button this could be true since they have been experimenting with crossfading since winamp 2.0 which was only beta in the outputs. They (Nullsoft Excluding Justin who can't code) managed to create an external program crossfader v1.1 to do so however this required multiple winamps playing. I just might think they have done it !

Score: 0

But it is a 'VIS' button, meaning "visualisation." My take on the new button is it could be a visualization browser. Instead of having to manually select them in the setup menu, you could just click VIS to cycle through the different visualizations installed. Makes sense...

Actually I think Justin was the one who wrote the crossfading plug-in and it works great. I've been using it for ages. But you may be right - they could have integrated it directly instead of making you download the addition.

umm i think he means the unknown button, not the Vis button..... see the button next to the open button, its like up/down/left/right arrows... next to the 123 button (randomize button?)

It's totally a crossfade button...hence the crossed arrows. This was my big complain with Winamp...and yeah, it had the plugin, but it is nice to see it on the player itself.

Well we gotta remember that the skin is the base skin, it's not suppose to be special, I'm guessing they proposely make it look like crap just so skinners will have a better reason to make skins. I'm wondering if there are any people that know the specifics of the program itself. Will they imploy a fully customized GUI much like Sonique or whatever ? You can't judge a book by it's cover, I'm more interested in what it can do than what it looks like (cause I"ll stick with my Amptech Wood Edition skin by $teven no matter what, it works, and isn't too flamboyant(sp?) for me) And for that AOL icon crack someone posted... if that's all AOL is going to make Winamp do (for the program itself) than that's fine with me.. we gotta remember they do own the company... and you can choose not to have the icon placed. i'll start b!tchin and moaning once AOL screws up Winamp like it's doing to ICQ.

Well said. Word is that Winamp will have an incredible skinning architecture that blows Sonique out of the water. Don't forget, the K-Jofol guys are writing the damn thing!

I'm hardly enticed by these shots ... I love the interface of Winamp 2.65 and this only seems like a step backwards (buttons are flat and ugly, and the color just makes me want to puke). While 3.0 may have a ton of new features, bugfixes and overall improvements - why send us screenshots that look (IMO) like a second-rate skin? Tell us features!

Score: 0

Anymore, I could care less what a program looks like. Lets get software that works, then we will work on the physical look of it...

Score: 0

If it's going to continue to look like this... What improvements are they going to make to make 3.0 so *spectacular*? This hardly seems like news... at least not "Top of the page at Betanews" news. Anyway, on the brighter side... It looks like that button will go to a larger version of the player or possible full screen (huh?). So maybe that will give Winamp the possibility have having cool free form skins like Sonique or Kjofol, yet still keep the "streamlined" interface it's always had. But then again, that button could be the "Launch AOL" button... =)
