Firefox Tops 100 Million Downloads

By Nate Mook | Published October 19, 2005, 4:18 PM

The milestones keep coming for the little browser that could, and the Mozilla Foundation now has a new reason to celebrate: on Wednesday morning, downloads for Firefox surpassed 100 million. The second major release of Firefox, version 1.5, is due later this fall.

Although the number does not reflect actual users of the product, it does indicate continued enthusiasm for the open source Web browser that has taken on Microsoft's ubiquitous Internet Explorer and prompted Opera to turn freeware. "Our community of more than 100,000 Firefox developers, testers, and grassroots marketers, is rejuvenating Web browsing, which is why millions of new users make the jump to Firefox every week," said Mozilla developer Asa Dotzler.

Firefox is a great browser but when I first started working with it I had to go through a lot of trial and error to come up with a configuration of extensions that worked together and provided the value I wanted from the browser. So I created a blog to document the extensions that I use. Don't go through the same trial and error I did. Go to Mighty Joe's Firefox - Tried and True!

I've done the same thing for my freeware suite. For a "best of breed" freeware configuration go to Mighty Joe's Freeware.

Speaking of inflated numbers : how many copies of Windows XP have actually been shipped worldwide? Forget IE 6 . In actuarial terms it doesn't. It is an add-on.Opera, Firefox, Netscape are verifiable numbers. How many individuals use Firefox and import their IE favorites ?

Combine the Xiti world numbers

with Global Internet Usage stats

and you get an estimate of 90+ Million Firefox users. Even if they seriously messed up and are off by a factor of two, that would *still* be almost 50M Firefox users...

The new Netscape browser, though based on Firefox, does not identify itself as Firefox. It ID's itself as "Netscape." I've tried out Firefox, Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, Maxthon, Avant, Mozilla, SeaMonkey, K-Meleon, and more, and the only browser that identifies itself as "Netscape" in my site's browser statistics is Netscape.

Why are we nitpicking this?

The official, final build of Firefox has been downloaded from Mozilla servers over 100 million times. That's it. That's the story. The end. This is not about new users or people who have switched to Fx from IE. It is what it is.

For the record, betas and RC's are not counted here. As an example, I'm running Fx 1.5 beta 2, but my downloads of beta 1 and 2 don't count, do they? Of course they don't, since I used beta 1's auto-update feature to get to beta 2, which meant a 700k download patch. Should that count as a unique download? Of course not.

So final builds of Firefox have been downloaded from Mozilla a hundred million times now. Great. Cool. Why do so many people have a problem with this? It's a great browser, and a lot of its users want to update to the newest version. It's not like Mozilla has ever claimed a hundred million unique users.

Keep in mind, it's the media yelling about these numbers, not Mozilla.

Err, you should re-read the article, especially this part:

"Our community of more than 100,000 Firefox developers, testers, and grassroots marketers, is rejuvenating Web browsing, which is why millions of new users make the jump to Firefox every week,"

and note the part in which Asa said: "...which is why millions of new users make the jump to Firefox every week..."

so you are wrong, this *IS* all about new users!

"Keep in mind, it's the media yelling about these numbers, not Mozilla."

So who send them these numbers? Wasn't that the press release written by the Mozilla Corporation Inc. itself? Yes it was, so get the facts right or simply don't add stupid/misleading comments.

FIrefox didn't prompt opera to turn free.

But I love both browsers ^_^.

Be it the main reason or not, either way Firefox was definitely a major influence in Opera's decision to become free. Opera knew that having it shareware would not make it the #1 browser since Firefox is just as good (there are different strengths and weaknesses) and is freeware, so it's obvious that users would prefer FF. and IE is just a load of s*** so yeah... FF is(/was) the main freeware browser.

Didn't we just see a post not too long ago that proved Netscape inflated the downloads of Firefox? So this data is NOT reliable. Therefore 100 million downloads is suspect.

Besides the fact, that any thing free people will try, and whether or not they RETAIN this product is another matter. Just because the programs are downloaded does not neccesitate their use. Therefore, Firefox shouldn't be considered a contender based on downloads alone.

Show me some real live stats proving that people visit pages on a daily basis with some substantial use, then I will be impressed. Otherwise I am taking this article with a grain of salt.

And yohimbe9 brings up a good point.. 100 million downloads TOTAL? or EACH version has been downloaded 100 million times. I would wager this is a GRAND TOTAL, and 100 Mil d/l divided into 8 distinct versions, that's only 12 million downloads.....

Score: 0

|

Actually it's more like 12.5 million. I thought Netscpae was inflating the statistics on actual usage. I seem to remember some crap about it identifying itself as firefox or some mess like that. Maybe I'm wrong I dunno.

HUH?

How is a browser detection function and the number of firefox downloads even related?

Score: 0

|

What? Yes it is reliable. The data is direct downloads from Mozilla.org. The "inflated data" you are refering to is the fact that Netscape was refering to itself as Firefox, inflating the stats that websites collect to identify what browsers people are using.

Score: 0

Maybe Netscape should change it to "BFirefox."

amen to that, on the other hand with modern machines with say at least a gig of ram for most users bloat from a browser really isn't an issue. Someone with an older, less powerfula machine and less ram, this thing would be rather taxing on the system resources though. I would be one ofthose it wouldn't really affect, I just really don't care for the netscape garbage.

not to knock FF, i use it as my primary browser now, but i'm assumming this number is downloads of every version including updates. so i count as 8 downloads just because i've had every version from 1.0 to 1.0.7. then of course i've been running the 1.5 main betas so that's two more.

Score: 0

|

not to mention re-downloading because you choose to run the file rather than save it...or those trolls that download over and over to screw up statistics, but hey, to the best of my knowledge the free version of Opera hasnt had the numbers FF has had by this time in its history, and there's no way to get the numbers perfect. Remember, no matter what you do to perfect a peice of software, end users will always find a way to screw everything up :)

Score: 0

|

Same here. I've downloaded the program 25 times since v.1.04! So it's more like 10 million downloads. Moreover, who really cares about FF download updates every week as news!

Score: 0

|

if you are downloading the 1.5 from the auto-update feature then these don't get added to the count.

Score: 0

|

From what i've read they don't count downloads if they detect that you are already using firefox.

Score: 0

|

It only detects the CURRENT browser. If a site allows you to indentify other browsers on your machine, that would be a breach of security..

Also, what if you used IE to download Firefox, but you have Firefox installed? Granted if you like Firefox, you will most likely use it, but there is not guarantee that just because you HAVE Firefox doesn't mean you USE Firefox.

I use Netscape for General use, but I use IE for my downloads, because the download managers don't support Netscape yet. So when I know I visit a site that I am doing some heavy downloads, I use IE. Therefore, detection of my Firefox version is null and void.
