First Blu-ray Movie Disc Completed
By Ed Oswald | Published November 21, 2005, 11:13 AM
Sony Pictures has completed the first full-length Blu-ray disc and will be shipping it to hardware manufacturers for player testing. The movie, "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle," was recorded in MPEG-2 high definition, which offers a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels.
The move by Sony follows recent criticism by Blu-ray detractors over a vague launch date for the next-generation DVD technology. Sony has still not committed to a time frame for public availability, only stating that mass production of Blu-ray movies would begin in the "near future."
If they want to avoid this from being the next laser disc or betamax they better output lower resolutions than 1080... like 480 and 720. Todays TV's can't even display any 1080p video content - even the tv's that have 1080p resolution cannot ACCEPT a 1080p signal, they simply upconvert everything to 1080p. So if they make these discs only in 1080p, nobody can watch them. Plus who plans on buying a new 1080p set for $4,000 over the next couple years when studies show most homes got a new main TV over the past 3.

|How about the Chronicle of Narnia for a first release. By the time Blu-Ray or even HD-DVD is in stores, this movie will already be on standard DVD.

|Are you guys not capable of reading english??? It says the movie was released to test hardware. It has nothing to do with what will be released retail when the players are launched. They could have released anything for a hardware test so why does it matter if it's CA 2 or Matrix???
My concern is that they are still insisting on MPEG 2 and have not switched over to MPEG 4. If DVD's switched to MPEG 4 we would have far more space on our current gen of DVD's

|Yes, most of us are capable of reading. I understood what the article said, but that still doesn't account for the fact that Charlie's Angels 2 is a horrible movie to use as a demo.

|How do you know and why do you care, do you test Blu-Ray hardware? And if so, would you be happier if they used Spice World?

|It seems like Sony's biggest concern is backwards compatibility, at least with software. Since all standard DVD's use MPEG 2, it would be cheaper for Blu-Ray player manufacturers to make Blu-Ray players.
Blu-Ray discs could also be using 96 KHz 24-bit PCM 5.1 channel surround sound with lossless compression but instead they have chosen to use Dolby Digital sound.

|dont be so hard on sony....
¤blueray stores more than hd-dvd, and is a better candidate for the next gen discs.
¤sony supplys us with walkmans that have better battery life (40h network walkman/95h cd player) and durability than ipods, at a reasonable price.
they cant be all that bad.

I think Kill Bill would have been a cool one to release...they couldn't have picked a cheesier movie than CA.

|C'mon They picked Charlie's Angels to appeal to the "18-35yr old white male" demographic with a lot of disposable income, nothing better to do and probably went and saw the movie for either the intellectual content or all that half naked booty on the screen. This is the target audience that Sony wants and belive me, if they thought that they could put a porn movie at that resolution on your screen, well all I can say is that while the rootkit fiasco may have made a few haters of Sony products, most of the demographic stated above will buy a Blu-Ray and not think about anything else. Just my thought on the subject

|OK, so instead of complaining what they chose, what movie would you suggest for the first release on blue ray?
My pick would be either the Matrix or Underworld.
Keep in mind the studio isn't looking at popularity for a movie to be released, they are looking at figures for the bottom line. It has to be action, a blockbuster, and it has to appeal to many different levels... Agree, Charlie's Angels isn't my first pick either.. But they probably thought it would be a safe pick.
Lets also remember this is the same group that pick's the Oscar winner's.. and I am sure we all disagree with them on those picks as well..its political.

|Sorry I can't tell you. I blocked access to Sony's IP address range in case there is another Sony rootkit on my network phoning home. That also means sony.com is blocked so I don't know what movies sony has made.
They should release something better than Charlies Angels. After all they want me to switch from DVD to their Blu-Ray format (never gonna happen after the rootkit fiasco) but they should at least try!
A blockbuster, yeah Matrix or Underworld are cool. Maybe a re-issue of something, with more extras or a directors cut.
Lets face it, anything is better than C.A.
P.S - IP's blocked are 64.14.0.0 - 64.14.255.255. ET phone home no more! :-)
