First SaveNapster Now StopNapster
By Aaron Dobbins | Published June 22, 2000, 3:09 PM
A new site, created by an independent band from Oakland, CA, aims to shut down Napster rather than save it. StopNapster.com is quite an interesting find, giving readers tips on sending MP3 files with stop napster propaganda inserted into them, Napster bombs, and several other methods to prevent Napster from functioning correctly. Brought to you by "The Tabloids," StopNapster claims no affiliation with the major record labels, but represents the smaller fish in the big sea that is the record industry. Even the band leaders wife admitted she did not expect to have a major effect on the system, and that the methods mentioned do not adversly affect the users computer. Visit StopNapster.com for more information.
"The following artist have been ripped off by music pirates using Napster. This list is a tiny fraction of the death toll:
Nirvana, Tori Amos, Puff Daddy, Celine Dion, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Matchbox 20, Verve Pipe, Radiohead, Lenny Kravitz, Counting Crows, Sting, Michael Jackson, Busta Rhymes, the Beatles, Smash Mouth, Dave Mathews Band." _ stopnapster.com
GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
I really like the Michael Jackson - Beatles one. Yea, right. How Does It Feel To Be One of The Beautiful People Michael?
Which one of these artists listed has suffered from so called music piracy?
Get a life and stop pissing me off!
Again, the only pirates are the recording labels.
Score: 0
|The recording labels are pirates? They own the rights to the music. If you did not pay for it, you deserve to go to jail. Just because you can't afford it or do not want to pay for it, it does not make it right. Wrong is WRONG. Stealing is STEALING. Turn yourself in to the local police station.
Score: 0
|Wait a second here. First of all insulting me is not going to convince me of anything. Second, you assume too much. Third, who are you?
Score: 0
|...it would be worth paying for (my opinion, of course). Back in the 60's and 70's, I had no problem paying a few dollars for a record. The music was good, the musicians were really playing, and there was a large variety of (then current) musical styles to choose from.
I do not want to buy a .50 cent piece of plastic for 20+ dollars containing music that's contrived in a board room meeting. As for buying digitized remixes of older tunes, forget it!
What's all this crap about the starving musician? Like Metallica is on skid row, sure 'dude'. @#$% you, snot-nosed punks, 'couldn't play your way out of a wet paper bag.
Sure it's a tough business, but did I twist your arm? If you want to make money, do something else. The only theifs are the record company weasels. Leave us old farts alone, we've already paid for your porches and palaces.
CDs are just too expensive. Bottom line.
Score: 0
|Cd's are too expensive? Who cares. If you download something without paying for it, you are still a snot nosed theif. Just because you can't afford it, doesn't make it right to steal. Man, the morals and ethics of some people. Yes, we the public made them rich. They have a talent that is desired. Everybody that has downloaded an MP3 from the web deserves to go to jail.
Score: 0
|Again, nothing but insults. Actually, I don't care who you are.
Think about it. Where did these musicians get their ideas and inpsirations from? By SHARING. If you want to go this route about stealing, let's look at cassette tapes. These very same musicians learned how to play by taping their friends record collection. Is that not stealing? So now they have become rich and famous from 'stealing' recordings via cassette tape. Now I'm the a******, because I downloaded an already stolen rendition of a beatles song.
Your arguments are not going to convince me. I don't waste my time on napster, but the whole concept of jailing everyone for SHARING music is rediculous. I look at this as pay back time.
More insults? Keep them coming, I'm having fun.

|Many people here are complaining about the pirating of music, and putting a lot of blame on napster. Sure, they have broken some laws, but I think the method of approach in dealing with it is stupid. These big companies, and artists are whining. Why doesn't someone find a way to make good use of this MP3 phenomenon?
Face it people... Pirating has been around 1 day less than technology has been around. Music, video's, software, etc. It is stealing in a way, and in other ways its not. Some software prices are rediculous. For example, AutoCAD will put you back almost 2000 dollars Canadian. For a student who is 17 years old and taking a CAD course, who needs to do work at home, he's screwed.
Or how about the issue of buying a CD for 1 or 2 songs. Is your solution to wait for it to be played on the radio so you can record it? That is stupid as hell, who could pull that off with all the songs they like? Unless you live in Europe, and get digital radio, the quality would be S**t. You people aren't giving realistic solutions, and your arguments are pointless. Napster is a form of revolution on the internet, the same way organized pirating of software was. For those of you who know what I'm talking about, think back to 3 years ago, and the developement of the 'scene'. Wake up people, and realize that Napster is not to blame. They have pioneered a very effective method of file sharing. The rest of us have pioneered a way of getting songs. I know people with over 15 gigs of MP3s, and yet, they have over 200 cds, and they pay for the CD BURNER, and HARDWARE, and Blank CDs to record with.
StopNAPSTER.COM is a joke, they can go to hell. Napster rules. I like a song from the 1980's, what you want me to go and buy it? It's illegal, then let it be, so is J-walking. Hehe, those damn musicians do it themselves I bet, just like police cars speed without need. Let them become a bit more creative, and find a way to keep their audiences. I know groups that make wicked CDs, with awesome sleeves, and extra stuff on the CD that you just don't get on MP3. I buy those CDs. How about the type of music that you can only find a couple of the "popular songs" on the net with. Then you search on CDNOW.COM and find the CD, and buy it.
I have MP3s, but I also have CDs, so stop these foolish claims, and let the music industry get a wiff of what the future is like, rather than put a stop to electronic progression.
Score: 0
|Stealing is still stealing no matter what you call it. The CEO's of Napster should incur civil AND criminal penalties.
Score: 0
|Funny you say that when they haven't broken any laws.
Score: 0
|Try reading the DigitalMillennium Copyright Act. They broke a few points in the newest addition to the US copyright laws. First and foremost was providing a means of faciltating copyright infringement.
Score: 0
|Last I checked, conspiracy to commit larceny was still a crime. As was conspiracy to commit copyright infringement, accessory to larceny and copyright infringement as well as a multitude of other state, federal and international laws. I say hang'em.
Score: 0
|But that can't be easily proven. Technically Napster is nothing more than a search engine and a file transfer protocol. Nothing illegal about that.
Score: 0
|Napster is a centrlized server that connects individuals so they can share MP3's. Napster is illegal because it's sole purpose is to share MP3's, legal or illegal copies, doesn't matter. Because this is all it can share the courts will rule in favor of the RIAA. If Napster had written their program to share many different types of files then they would have a leg to stand on.
Score: 0
|losers........at $18+ a CD (which costs less than $.50 to make) for 1 or 2 good songs that is outragous. People would have no problem paying $5 for a CD.....Go napster
Score: 0
|Why are you guys all so pissed off at this site? I think what their site is pretty funny actually. Now it's just up to Napster to counter their tactics. Most people that use Napster know what they're doing is illegal so what's the big deal?
Besides, newsgroups are where you get the real stuff anyway.
Score: 0
|I agree with tomp. Most of the CD's I buy only has a
few songs I like. If artists came out with CD's that most
of the songs on it were good then sure I would pay $18.
And what about CuteMX and others like it. Do you see anyone sueing
them? etc. I think they should leave Naspter alone or at least sue all the other programs like it alone with Napster.
Score: 0
|Then don't buy the CD. If you like the song wait until it gets played on the radio and tape it. This is legal and no money is stolen from artist.
Score: 0
|The big deal is called theft. The RIAA has to make a point and Napster is an easy target. Tough s*** for Napster.
Score: 0
|Personally I find all this hilarious. They sound like a bunch of 2 year olds. Actually.. they sound like a bunch of jealous 2 year olds cause they are so horrid that they they don't even have their songs on napster as of yesterday when I checked. *snicker* Just ignore em and let em fade away. They apparently think any publicity is better than no publicity. Apparently they don't realize when you piss off the people who might *snicker* buy your records. They tend not to. Sorry, saying someone might buy their records got me laughing. ^^;

|I hope some hacking group takes down the stopnapster.com site. What that site is doing is illegal.
Score: 0
|How is stopnapster.com doing illegal things? The only thing they are guilty of is crappy graphics!
Plus, 1. You want someone to hack the site because it's "illegal?" THAT'S illegal!
2. Most of Napster's users are committing crimes, don't forget that. Many are downloading the music in place of the CD, rather than as a demo... I see trying to hurt the system in the way StopNapster is doing legitamate, non-intrusive, and non-destructive.
Score: 0
|Actually what that site is doing is called parody. They should have copied the Napster graphics verbatem and tossed in their humorous content. Nopt only would that have been legal but it would have pissed off Napster knowing they coud do nothing about it. Man, that's a genius plan.
Score: 0
|From the contact page: "We apologize for the inconvenience but you no longer contact StopNapster.com directly throught this site. A few misguided folks have made that impossible. Please check back later."
Oh please... If you're stupid enough to think that you won't get harassed when you post a contact method, then you're stupid enough to think that type of site is going to have some affect.

|They say that "CD sales are down by 4% around college campuses, but overall CD sales are up 16%...blah blah blah, that comes out to an overall drop in CD sales of 20%"
What the hell is that?? That retard can't even add !!
If overall sales are up 16% then how can they also be DOWN by 20% at the same time?
What a crock of S**T !!
DIE LUSERS DIE !!!!
Score: 0
|apparently they do math better than you do. the 20% drop includes the 16% percent that they didnt go up in the year. (simplistic ex. for you: for arguments sake lets assume a sales survey of 100,000 albums last year. this year, globally those sales would have jumped 16% to 160,000 however, college campus sales dropped 4% to 96,000. which is a 20% drop from 160,000 potential sales from normal markets. get it?)
Score: 0
|YIKES, apparently they do math better then I do as well. change those 160,000 marks to 116,000 and hit me with a stupid hammer.
Score: 0
|"...includes the 16% percent that they _didnt_ go up in the year"?
A 16% _increase_ in CD sales was reported, not a decrease.
Score: 0
|Man. Is there anybody here who can do math? What they claim is that the net effect of mp3 on cd sales on college campuses is the difference between what the total percentage change was (assuming that college sales had a negligible effect on total sales percentage) and what the actual college percentage change. Of course they screwed up and here's how:
Assume $100 college sales in prior year.
Total sales increased 16% - According to them, without mp3, college sales would have increased the same - making this year's sales $116.
Actual college sales were $96 (4% decrease).
To calculate the change you have to subtract the actual from the supposed and divide by the SUPPOSED (not the actual) to get a percentage change of 17.24%.
Score: 0
|Yes, an increase was reported *outside* the campus purchases. campus purchases went down 4% INSTEAD of going up 16% like everywhere else. so the net down for this year is 20%
Score: 0
|I see what you're getting at now, but still, the 16% figure is purely theoretical. Nobody can say for sure that there wouldn't have still been a loss even if Napster didn't exist.
Score: 0
