Need a firewall freshener? Tuesday marks Check Point Software's 15th anniversary, and to celebrate, it's offering free copies of Check Point ZoneAlarm Pro 2009 to all comers.
Check Point's anniversary promotion runs from 9:00 am EST today until 9:00 am on Wednesday, and includes a one-year license for one PC running Windows XP or Vista. The company will also offer an assortment of discounts on ZoneAlarm Antivirus, ZoneAlarm Pro, and ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite.
ZoneAlarm, one of the category's more venerable titles, has evolved in recent years from a program that assumes the user is knowledgeable about potential threats to a program that can be adjusted to keep the civilians from being frightened by an overload of popups and queries from the software (let's call it "cancelorallowaphobia"). The SmartDefense Advisor is in this version able to configure proper access rights for over 2 million applications. ZoneAlarm also includes identity theft protections that keep a particular eye out for sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, and has an appealing "game mode" in which the software refrains from pestering you while you're at play.
ZoneAlarm Pro's had an interesting time of late in comparisons against other software firewalls. After a rough go of it for version 7 in the well-respected Matousec Firewall Challenge, the new 8.0.020.000 revision of the software blasted back in late September, scoring a robust 86% overall (PDF available here), which in Matousec parlance is a Very Good protection level rating. (The other two packages tested at that time, BitDefender Internet Security 2009 12.0.10.2 and McAfee Internet Security 2009 10.0.209, scored 7% and 12% respectively, which in Matousec parlance is a protection level rating of None.)
Test results for the current 8.0.020.000 version aren't currently available at the popular Test My PC Security site. The 8.0 version of the software was released in late August and normally sells for $19.95.
Does this ZoneAlarm finally support 64-bit Vista? There have never been any technical difficulties caused by Microsoft that have prevented the ZoneAlarm developers from supporting 64-bit Vista. Symantec had no trouble developing an extremely high quality, reliable firewall for 64-bit Vista despite the existence of things like Patch Guard.

Seems like Vista x64 is not supported. But I prefer NIS 2009! Would recommend NIS 2009 :)

I wish I could disagree with so many who find this product not only far too resource intensive, but far too intrusive.
In the end it is more a pain in @ss rather than an @sset.

Don't need or want Pro, but Zonealarm is good stuff - better than that mess of an app Comodo. People having problems likely have PC issues deeper than their choice of firewall.

Used a few emails to get the legit keys as well. Will be usefull when fixing problems, and they might get some customers out of it after a year.
While I have a hardware firewall, I like the outbound security software firewalls provide.

Go thump yourself. I've had nothing but problems with it. The main one was that it kept telling me that my hard drive was failing and it wasn't and it also would give me many BSODs as well.

Can you guess how many issues I've ever had with my linux firewall that were related to the kernel itself? I think there's been 1-2 issues over 6 years?

I'm not a great believer in software firewalls. I use a hardware firewall combined with NOD32. It seems to work well and I don't have to deal with all the popups.

Do I REALLY need this much security on my home network. I've got a router with ports locked down. I use NAT. I've got anti-virus (free). I run spyware scans. I have the Vista firewall enabled. I even run backups to external media nightly.
I've never had any problems. None.
I've had NIS and found it was the biggest resource hog ever. I wonder how many other people would see performance boosts if they removed this bloat. I think that software like this is overkill for a home user like me.

I talked to a Microsoft Tech Rep who also said he ran no anti-virus. I just don't have that much confidence in my computer knowledge. Good luck and clear sailing.

NIS and resource hog? LOL. Forget the past...
Have you tried NIS 2009? It's one of the lightest and fastest security suite out there. It's been proven too. I use NIS 2009 it's taking less 10 MB of memory and installing it was so easy. It did take a couple of minutes to uninstall NIS 2008 but after restarting my computer it installed in less than a minute or two. And it's very light on my system. As far as protection goes, it's got one of the best firewall! and virus definitions are updated every 5-10 minutes not that I care about because it's firewall that matters the most to me

Try uninstalling and reinstalling it and see how you like it then. That's if you *can* uninstall it without having to download and run a script, then rip out of the registry all references to the product. After having to do that on a dozen or so computers, I swore that my company would never, ever use Norton products again (not that I would have brought the stuff in the first place, but it was there when I was hired).

Norton has a specialized uninstall tool, Norton Removal Tool. It does all the work that the standard uninstaller doesn't.
The 2009 NIS has a new installer. It MAY actually uninstall now without the removal tool.
I don't any reason to uninstall NIS. It works. And I like software firewalls. They let me block programs that check for updates without permission like Acrobat Reader for instance.
All right. I am petty when I block Reader. But it works on ad supported software as well.
I never had any problems in the past with ZoneAlarms firewall. If I wasn't using NIS I would download and use ZoneAlarm. I do understand that some prefer depending on a router. I just like the ability to control what goes on my PC.
Routers are not hardware firewalls. They run software. Calling a router a hardware firewall would be like calling a Linux box firewall a hardware firewall.
The only true hardware firewall that exists is an on off switch.

Why do they need a specialized uninstall tool? Just fix the standard uninstaller. Maybe they did that with NIS 2009. However, I don't have the time to test all new versions to see if they actually live up to the hype.

No thanks...not even the opportunity to get the pro version for free will convince me to use Zone Alarm again.
After my last experiences with Zone Alarm on my computers, I will never ever use it again.
