GDrive the Future of Data Storage?
By Ed Oswald | Published March 7, 2006, 12:04 PM
If Google gets its way, the search giant could soon be acting as your hard drive. The company accidentally leaked speaker's notes from CEO Eric Schmidt's appearance at its analyst event, which detailed plans for Google to be at the center of data storage.
Google would initially like to store e-mails, Web history, pictures and bookmarks -- much like Microsoft's Windows Live service -- eventually moving toward storing "100% of user data." The notes say that the company is currently working on such plans, including something called "GDrive."
Details aren't provided on this feature, but it would likely have something to do with the plans mentioned in the notes. The effort would put the company in direct competition with Microsoft, and inevitably spur discussions on privacy and security.
GDrive would likely garner the attention of both the government and hackers, who for their own reasons may want access to the data. However, Schmidt told analysts at the event that any data held would only be with the user's permission.
Google is not commenting on the inadvertent release, saying the notes weren't intended for publication and that the company has "nothing to announce at this time." However, it looks as if much of the plans are aimed at undercutting Microsoft.
Right now, due to the way data is stored, the computer and cell phone become more important than Internet services. With centrally located data, the operating system becomes less relevant. According to the notes of the presentation, Google believes centralized storage "suits our strength vis-Ã -vis Microsoft."
If Google doesn't do this, someone else will. In a few years when we all are consuming and generating gigabytes of information a day (each), the data storage industry might be booming - and so might the advertising that will go inevitably hand-in-hand with it.

1. Is it useful, if so I will tell my clients about it and maybe use it myself, if not, I will ignore it unless number 2 applies.
2. Is it dangerous...if so I should warn my clients not to use it.
If you have been paying attention (and obiously several folks here have as its mentioned below) you will remember the little application called Gmail Drive. This app connected a windows shell link (looked like a drive) to a hidden http interface to your gmail folder. It used this 1 or 2 gig of storage and held files as email attachments. There were some limitations, but it was quite innovative in its use of existing technolgy and free services. Gmail quickly made changes preventing this from working but it demonstrated its usefulness to me in that i could pass out the login to that account or i could jump on someone elses machine and grab my encrypted files or my collection of useful apps just using this little tool. I use multiple computers and i used it to store files that I wanted to access from all of them without having to ftp, vpn, etc... All while using googles bandwidth and hard drive space.
I am not opposed in principle to google hosting files for me, but i will most certainly be mindful of the risks to my data and myself if i am unwise in what I upload there. I cannot control what others do, but I can advise those that will listen of what I think is best and why.

Actually rijp you are one of my favorite posters. Your quick retreats into personal attacks and controntational posturing is always sure to liven up my morning surfing. You tend to attack the poster rather than the idea and enjoy ridiculing even if you have not taken the effort to fully understand the topic.
Contrary to your implication, I actually rarely ever look up words. There is no need to because I use words so much that I learn to remember what they mean. I also read a lot so I tend to pick up some of the less used ones that enable me to communiate precisely what I am trying to. I also seldom use the biggest word when smaller ones will do. Sometimes, however, a specific word may carry a nuance of meaning that fits my thoughts particularly well. I then use it in the hope that the reader does not already know it, the context will reveal it's meaning. Lacking that, hopefully your Funk and Wagnal will suffice to enlighten you.
I can certainly endeavor to use smaller ones if it poses a challenge for you, but it is an effort to do so beyond a certain point.
Evidently my thinly veiled criticism of the namecalling and inane spouting here hit a nerve for you to respond so. I reject your reference to this textual mudfight as a debate. A debate has defined rules and a coherent topic. This forum seldom has either let alone both. I also did not realize that in order to post on a topic you must be one of the first ones to see it on the site or so you imply by your comment about the "middle of a conversation".
It may surprise you to know that I am not new to anything here. I have been posting here for as many years as it has been possible (I believe that it was about 5 years ago that the site was enhanced to permit this - not sure on the dates for this) but I am loathe to post just to see my nickname on a website as this thrill lost its novelty for me a long time ago so I tend to restrict my contributions to topics that interest me or that I know enough about to form an actual opinion.
Alas, I am not an editor or cool dude. I am realy quite boring in almost every way. If my language belies this, then please accept my apologies for unintentionally misleading you. In fact I am always surprised when someone else sees value in my words, maybe this is just my deepseated insecurity or some childhood trauma...my therapist may know...
I generally do however, know what I am talking about as I try to only get into discussions about topics that I understand. You may find that a bit arrogant...probably it is just that.
Your use of the word Rhetoric to describe my post reveals a woefull lack of reading comprehension (you didn't test well there did you). I did in fact have a point (even if my presentation was a bit elaborate as is my wont) that you can either disagree with or agree with. Yet instead you attack (modus operandi). Maybe if you whip out that Funk and Wagnal that you boast of you can dig out the meaning and respond to the point instead of the poster or the presenation.
I will lay one more little thing on you and this is a quote that I coined today.

He is correct, they are very reasonably priced.
So if you have a local hard drive, why upload? Personally, the time and effort it takes to upload and delay, and worrying about where my data ACTUALLY ends up, I will take the 400 gb local drive, thanks.
700 mb ISO, doesn't matter, I will still rather store it locally.
Besides, we already have a solution for bookmarks, web-history, emails, images and documents, its called Yahoo.
I have been using
bookmarks.yahoo.com
search.yahoo.com
email.yahoo.com
And they have a place to store datafiles, zip files, and various text files.. for FREE.
I have been using these features for years.
I have said it once, and I will say it again, Google makes it seem like they are inventing something, they are not. They are a big name, and all of a sudden these previous unknown features make it to the front page, but they are anything BUT new.

One thing I do love about google is that they have some great services and products, for free. There are not very many companies you can say that about. I have no doubt that once google really gets established and moves to all the arena's they want, they will dominate just about all of them as well. I mean look at yahoo for all the stuff they have, are they really doing that well are most of the services even known about? On the other hand google has a few products but the list is growing and they are usually great. I will take gmail anyday of yahoo, hotmail or any other free email service. I don't know if you have a gmail account but they are great! I would never use anything else. 2701 Mb's of email storage and counting great new interface ads that are barely even noticable free pop access unlimited filters they do have ads yes but at least has something to do with what your doing.
I love google I hope they continue to inovate because they do it so well, and make a mockery of Ms and almost all other software companies out there and do it all, for free to the customers using them!

now, I had 2 gig mailbox when Google introduced 100 meg. I had bookmark backup for about 10 years, been using it for years with no problem. I can sychronize data, bookmarks, files for FREE. I can save my email on the web emai for FREE. EVerything is Free. Been using it fine, customize home page, links, lots of stuff with Yahoo FREE.
Nothing is limited or crippled. Even the desktop search from yahoo is better than other desktop searches. I have a PDA, guess what, Yahoo includes a FREE synchronize software for Outlook AND yahoo mail, for what? FREE!

Scary in a way. Centrally stored data means hackers only need to target one place and they can get anything they want. At the same time without local data storage, viruses and malware will have trouble spreading. Think about this though. Now, I don't believe google necessarily would do something evil necessarily, but are we willing to put our trust in them for something like this? I want my data to be my own. Though legally I would still own it, well--when's the last time any large company has done something illegal? The link you provide leads to a shell-extension. This will work just fine until Google changes the URL to gmail. Which it has done several times, and will likely keep doing.
