Gateway Sheds Professional Computer Division

Gateway continued to reposition itself following its sale to Acer on Monday, saying that it had sold its professional division -- which includes desktops, laptops, and tablets -- to MPC (formerly Micron) for an undisclosed sum.
While initially the transition will be seamless to customers, within one year the MPC brand will replace Gateway's on professional products. Support relationships will be assumed immediately.
With Gateway's professional unit in tow, MPC will have annual sales of about $1.1 billion USD with 1,000 employees. "Virtually all" of Gateway's employees in the professional division have been transitioned to new jobs within MPC, the companies said.
"This acquisition helps transform MPC into one of the top PC companies serving the professional market, including small-and-medium businesses, education and government," MPC chairman and CEO John Yeros said in a statement.
They think there's more money to be made in consumer rather than business???!!???!!!

|I have a GP-233 - one of the best systems I have ever bought. A while after I purchased it, Gateway did some stuff (Profile PC, etc.) that just tanked the company. It had started to look like they were getting ready to turn the company around...
However, this is seems to be yet more evidence that they firm in tanking the company further. I see no reason to even consider buying a Gateway again. Sad...I really loved their cow theme too.

|I have never liked anything about Gateway, with the exception of their keyboards and cases (from about 10 years ago).
I had no idea that they had a "professional" division - no joke or pun. When my wife's place of business ordered machines, they looked identical to ones I worked on for people at their homes. I believe that the model numbers were different, but the guts were identical - I had both apart.
Since the acquistion of eMachines, I see no differences between Gateway and e. The attitude of the idiots at e have made me vow to not ever buy a product from either company ever again. I give that advice to clients.
To show - I was working on a customer's e T1150 that I was going to change to a P3 instead of the Celeron. HE had already purchased the P3, in case you wonder. I wanted to obtain the fan shroud that was included on those cases that had a P3 from the factory, but was not included on the Celeron models. e (or Gateway) would not help me because the original serial number could not be found on the machine. When I explained I wanted to purchase, and this had nothing to do with warranty performance, that did not matter. The customer service drone stated that was policy, and hung up on me.

|I used to work for MPC (formerly Micron). They killed Zeos. To this day I have not been able to forgive them for that, and I likely never will.
That said, it would be mighty hard for them to make the Gateways any worse... But I'm sure they could find a way.
