Gmail Storage to Reach 2GB and Beyond

By Nate Mook | Published April 1, 2005, 8:32 AM

It's not an April Fool's joke: Google is once again upping the ante in the Web mail wars, announcing plans to double the storage offered by Gmail to 2GB. The news comes as Yahoo moves to match Google's previous 1GB limit. Google officials also said they will make additional storage increases over time.

The upgrade arrives on the one-year anniversary of Gmail's launch. Although less than 1 percent of users have neared the 1GB limit, Google says it doesn't want people to worry they will run out.

"Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able. We know that email will only become more important in people's lives, and we want Gmail to keep up with our users and their needs," Google says on the Gmail Web site.

Rumors had speculated that Google would use Gmail's first birthday to take the service public, but for now, Gmail remains in beta testing. However, an abundance of available invites and random signup links on Google's homepage have already opened the door for nearly everyone.

Yahoo, which is still in the process of implementing 1GB, dismissed Google's announcement as irrelevant to most users. "At a certain point beyond 1 gigabyte it just becomes a number," a Yahoo spokesperson told Reuters.

Comments

I'm not going to knock Gmail, I have an account... but it wont become a primary e-mail address until Google implements more features to truly make the system more useful. Having 2gb is wonderful, but if you can't easily manage your files what's the point?

Google seriously need to provide IMAP access to Gmail, and then it'll truly be the superior e-mail service.

Dear Friends,
It is always good to increase the storage space of the mail account. But at the same time G mail should work on some additional features like Calender, Messangers etc.. Hope G mail will take care about this

come on guys.... think. Did someone forget they're using this service for FREE? When you can make a better service for free, then you can start complaining. It's still a beta, which means they want you to tell THEM your comments/complaints instead of complaining to everyone else all over the Internet. No more whining. Instead, do something more constructive with your time - like smashing your pinkie with a rock.

Gmail is the Starbucks of Web-based mail. I was able to finally give my teenager a email account that isn't spammed with Viagra, various Enlargement spam, or other various spam that I had with Hotmail, Yahoo etc. Even with the controls set on those it was still getting through. It's not pretty like the rest but it attests to the fact that simple is better and you don't need a gazillion MHZ computer to use it. Rated 5 Stars in this family!

Gmail doesn't bother me with blinking ads and Gmail doesn't send me [any] promotional messages from its "partners," and Gmail is simple, easy, and fast, and Gmail's filters allow me to funnel any type of mail into a variety of folders from which I can search and delete later.

Most of Google's apps are only average quality at best — witness Google Desktop Search and how slow Picasa 2 is. But I give Google great credit in their continued attempt to make the world a better place, and that folks, is what it's all about.

Gmail is in need of some heavy development before it goes public. At the moment the features are average, if not minimal. Although I'd hate to see it turn into some Hotmail like setup where it's bloated with crappy features that just ruin email etiquette.
With the proposed increase of storage in the future I find it hard to believe that Gmail will remain "free". Sure, it can read through your emails and advertise something your most likely going to buy based on what you or someone has typed in the email; but really... does Google have enough bandwidth and storage to accomodate millions who may not even notice the advertisements?

What's so special about GMail? WOW, you hget a big Inbox that I'll never be able to fill. Sure, I have it, but MSN Messenger integrates better with Hotmail. Google looks like some old Geocities website that hasn't been updated, with some fancy loading procedures. SO WHAT? And don't even think about saying that MSN lets too much Spam in, because I've had no spam since the new Hotmail launched less than a year ago. And before I barely got anything.

Just like the iPod, Google and all of its services are lame and overhyped.

Score: 0

apparently you enjoy seeing 50 banner ads all over the place when you are reading your email
or you like waiting 5min to loading inbox page.
if so, by all means enjoy your hotmail and msn messenger.

on the other hand google is the fastest webmail service i ever used bar none. and their adwords are very unintrusive.

i do agree with you that this upgrade is overhyped, but at the same time it doesn't detract to the fact that gmail service is excelent.

First of all, you might not know that MSN is developing a service similar to Adsense, which can be seen on MSN search.

Second, it does not take ages to load, it's probably because you still have a 33.3 k connection to the Internet.

Hardly any spam? are you kidding or working for microsoft? I think it's both. I get over 50+ spam delivered to my INBOX daily, that's not even counting those that end up being tagged as spam.

GMAIL is GOOD and OVERHYPED for a reason, it REALLY is that GOOD.

"Just like the iPod, Google and all of its services are lame and overhyped."

Haha. I'm sorry, but what's in today is the cool factor and ease of use. Firefox, iPod and Google are in. Microsoft, Yahoo etc. are out this round..

Score: 0

|

I don't use an iPod, so I can't argue that side of it. But how can you say Google is overhyped? The reason they are so good is because of there security, same with Firefox. I don't recall Google ever requiring me to install any other programs or ActiveX software when I signed up for Gmail, but when you want to get software from Microsoft now, you have to download an ActiveX, or if you need to update your computer to make sure all of the leak holes are fixed, you had to install an ActiveX.

Maybe I am being a little too dramatic about it, but saying that Google is overhyped is basically saying that cars are overhyped, because tons of people have one and they have the ability to take us farther than we need to go.

hmmm you either haven't used gmail or you have but are one of those older generation people who for some weird reason find change and progress a hard thing to keep up with.
If you can't see the extremely obvious advantages of gmail over every single other webmail service then I think it's safe to dismiss your opinion as meaningless =)
oh and one more thing, if it wasn't for gmail, you would still only have 2mb storage in your hotmail account, did you stop to think about that? ;)

Score: 0

Just because he doesn't agree with you doesn't mean his opinion is moot. I have a gmail account, and I haven't used it at all. Not one bit. I prefer my ISP mail to it. I don't need a 2 gig inbox, nor do I want google snooping through my e-mails whatsoever.

Score: 0

Another one that doesn't understand active x. I to have a g-mail account I don't use it much because the lack of features. It does indeed look and feel dated and alot more work needs to go into some features before it thinks about going live. 2 gigs is nice, the average person will NEVER fill it and until google allows you to send larger attachments it's basiclly useless.

Score: 0

|

ok - I respected your opinion until the end. Google doesn't "snoop" into your e-mails. They could care less about your e-mail to your wife about needing money for the dog groomers.

You don't have to like Gmail, but try to at least know what you're talking about.

Score: 0

|

...larger attachments? 10MB is more than enough, and if it isn't, you don't need to be sending it by e-mail anyway. Realistically, 5MB+ is pushing it with any e-mail. Need to send more? Set up an FTP server.

1. I love Google, to death. They are a young company following through with giving back to their commpunity. They know how to have fun, and that leads me to..

2. Google created hell just by offering 1GB of free space - This meant a giant upgrade for anyone wanting to compete - Which means they'd have to spend more money. Now that they increased it to 2GB, they must spend even MORE money to keep up with GMail. I also love the fact they decided to go public on April 1st. The whole concept of 1GB in the beginning was a lie. I love it.

[edit] After reading the replies, the whole point of upping the storage is to make a point. They don't want you to stay with them for awhile, they want you to stay with that account for the rest of your life. Not to send giant files across the internet (Although it definately allows you too).
