Go!Zilla Gets Down and Dirty
By Aaron Dobbins | Published August 18, 2000, 1:06 PM
According to the GetRight Web site, the latest version of Go!Zilla performs some secret functions unknownst to the user to deactivate its rival software, GetRight. The company says that version 3.9 disables GetRight click monitoring, turns on its own click monitoring settings, and deletes GetRight from the Start Menu. For more information on how to fix the problem, you can read more at the GetRight Web site.
Usually I force DA to take over the downloading from standard Windows downloading using the ALT+CTRL key combination. After installing Go!Zilla, it doesn't start DA, but instead it starts Go!Zilla. No questions were asked duting Go!Zilla installation....

|Contrary to the artcle regarding getright and gozilla. gozilla does NOT delete get right from the start menu. i know this because i am a beta tester for both. i think you guys need to understand that they both respond to download requests and will screw up your ie or netscape if you let them.
I also did a fresh install for both, getright first and then go zilla. they are both in the start up menu without any problems.
This is a classic case of the media posting false and wrong information again. Betanews has really been doing it alot lately.
Also, in regards to the new mp3 cd player, my local circuit city has begun to sell them as of TODAY. i now own one and they are great.

|On the GetRight web site it states in bold letters that Go!zilla deletes the shortcut and then explains how to recreate it. You're implying they just made all that up?
Perhaps Go!Zilla removed that "feature" from their latest version.
Either way, BetaNews is not at fault.

So BetaNews is reporting accurately.

and NO i am not wrong about that because like i said, i am a gozilla beta tester and the lead man at gozilla told me that betanews is reporting false info.

Oh and BTW: I am a beta tester of Go!Zilla also. The beta versions didn't do as above, but the FINAL DID! Maybe you should check to see which version you are running, dumba**!

|It's not the start menu program entries that get removed, but rather the "startup" program group entry that causes Getright to launch at windows boot. realistically, it is probably necessary in order for GoZilla to work correctly. If Getright is running in the background, it may attempt to intecept browser clicks, and cause a conflict with Gozilla.

|I have often wondered why I.E. doesnt include a resumable download
plugin in it's software like older versions of netscape did but I guess this whole tracking adware thing is somehow connected.
I haven't ever seen one that would just let us alone and do the job.
If I used one I guess get right was the best I saw. In short if I can't get it from an FTP I just fight with it until I do.
Everything is so commercialized now days . For instance system mechanic which is a righteous program sells for 59 bucks but it doesn't all work until you get popped for another 50 bucks for the Industrial liscense which does open the rest of the funtionality.
I mean what's up with that ? I think some of them take out the
the aurate stuff once you have regged it but really this approach is
really bad because it raises questions of integrity in the minds of the users about deception by the makers.

|Downloads in IE are resumable; I do it all the time. Just start downloading the same file again and it'll resume from where it left off. (Of course, the web site has to support resuming.)

the page will always have to support resume even in ftp but just
like you know a utility from the old days that didnt get up and sing
3 choruses of mame and flash up things they think you want to buy : )
I had to wait like 2 hours the other day for the timeout so the
file would still be in a temp folder for when I reconnected and it
really wasn't worth the wait for a 50mb file .
Something will full reumability on command because if you cancel
or click "X" its back to the beginning you go.
Anyway those were good points you brought up. Maybe somebody will
read what's being kicked around and improve on it. Thanks

|Heck there's no tellin jr. I have win2k with sp1 network version and
I got up with the IE fellas about the browser not loading a page fully sometimes and they said I had some wierd beta version number or something but I used only windows update and the sp1 on a retail boxed version. They were sympathetic though and said maybe when the next version comes out. It has me down as using version 5.50.4134.0600
but there are 3 update sets after that . You know q254902 q261255 and
q269368 . when I sent the info in they seemed to think I was using a beta lol. No matter but it prolly came from sp1 although I didnt have time to verify that with those 3 pages of listed additions in the sp.
Anyway sometimes I think it's because I will be downloading multiple
files from multiple places. I keep changing the destination folder to
direct the file. when I come back with a partial , I get that "would you like to replace existing file and if I click cancel it just stops.
More than likeley those sites aren't supporting resume. I would still like to see evil microsoft grab for more and whip out a no frills plugin or intergrated utility for I.E. that was like getright.
then I could without all the advert hoopla , throw in about 10 files
and let it hammer them out kind of like ftp with a queue.
Thanks for the thoughts though. It would be great if the browser
showed overwite resume replace all in one window. On the other hand
if getright would guarentee they would strip the crap outta their utility , I am sure they would sell more copies of it but when you get it to test it before buying , well it just kind of chases some people away. I really keep my start up prog. trimmed down of cpu usage and ram allocation and non essential stuff gets ripped if it cant be configured to mind : )

|Well I can't say you're wrong: it's kinda hard getting hit by a truck if you don't get out of bed first, but I had no problem with the 3.5 version of Gozilla and all the rest, although I will admit Gozilla was the first to be installed. There is a reason for me wanting to use all these download managers, they sort of respect their downloads better between each other than say using Mass Downloader on 2 downloads simultaneously, so I will agree with the fella that said that Gozilla (or any other program) is not supposed to erase anything period. Gozilla 3.9 hacked my Netcaptor's registry entries and made it unusable, same thing for Download Accelerator!

|You obviously didn't bother to check out Getright software as well. It uses the very SAME Aureate Adware (which is what OptOut detects and erroneously flags as "spyware")that GoZilla uses to cycle in new ad banners in the free version. While I agree with the majority that it is reprehensible for GoZilla to wipe out start menu entries for a competing program, it makes complete sense that it would take over click detection. After all, do you want BOTH download clients trying to intercept the same download request??? Who knows what kind of conflict or crash it could cause in the first place. In the past I have much preferred GoZilla to getright, and filehound etc. It has always done a good job for me, and I like the way it handles alternate site searches much better than Getright does. You are lucky if Getright picks up half of the alternate download sites that Gozilla does, without playing with the server list manually. Gozilla also seems to have more features and flexibility. Even so, i have switched to Getright mainly because GoZilla crossed the line by deleting start menu entries of Getright's software. This is not acceptable in my opinion.

But hey, nothing's perfect!) of the time, easy to use compared to Go!Zilla and is much less noisier! I believe that a company will gain the respect and support of the online community through honest, good programming and not by attempting to screw the competitor. I mean, lets face it, Go!Zilla was "OK" until its actions surfaced. Instead of getting reviews for its product, it got a backlash from the community. Whats worse, its underhand tactics does not benefit the users! The least Go!Zilla could have done was ASK whether to change the current preset on our systems or INFORM us about the changes during installation. |Who gives a rat's a** who came up with the idea first? Unless Getright patented the concept of resumable downloads then neither they, nor anyone else can complain when another software company picks up on the same idea. It's called competition, and it promotes better product development, and each company must improve the product and expand features to keep up. It's the consumer that benefits. How do you know if Getright would be as good as some here claim, if Gozilla weren't around providing a bit of incentive to improve their software. I have used both programs in various versions over the past couple of years, and they both have significantly increased their features and capabilitites. I doubt if either product would be as feature-rich as they are now if only one company owned the rights to the idea.
