Google Adds Detail to European Maps

By the Betanews Staff | Published April 25, 2006, 5:01 PM

Google silently added street-level mapping capabilities to a number of countries in Europe Tuesday, bringing its local search service across the Atlantic. Users can search for specific street names and addresses, as well as pull up reviews of hotels and even find metro and train stations.

Directions are also possible, and Google Maps has integrated ferry information to plot trips across a body of water. The changes come as Europe gears up for World Cup 2006 in Germany, and detailed data is primarily available for Western Europe. Users have found a number of inaccuracies, but Google will likely roll out improvements over time.

Services like the wonderful Mappy.com (tons of features), Multimap, Maps24.com, and Maporama have provided street-level maps and directions for European cities and regions for many years. Btw, Mappy.com also provides detailed aerial imagery for 63 European cities. PagesJaunes offers gorgeous street-level imagery for cities in France and Spain.

This site has links to all of the services mentioned.

Excellent!! Now we'll be able to shush all the liberal rhetotic from across the pond.
Now, when someone posts something inflammatory, we'll do an ip trace, record a street-level Google image of their abode, and send it over with a message like,"We know where you live-- tone it down, or tonight you sleep with the fishes!"

And we'll respond, if we choose to lower ourselves to such depths, with a choice line full of snooty superiority to our fascist, war-mongering, oil-greedy children in the "greatest country on Earth" :)

Ha! PC_Tool just proved my point!

Yahoo! Is better than Google, thank you PC_Tool.

Do a search for Eberschwang, Austria (PC_Tool's golden paradise).. on Google..

Now try search.yahoo.com. booya! Who's your daddy now, Goo(hic!)gle.

100% more results! So stick that in your search engine and plot, B#$ch!

*edit*
Upon a sobering, albeit short lived glea, it was found that PC_Tool misspelled his Disney Tour in Austria, and Google is still (gulp!) king.. -sigh-

Wow what a changing of the guard..

First, Google has the second wave of useful features, Symantec has some serious problems (once Symantec was #1). Opera has supplanted Firefox as the fastest browser, Hyundai has some real nice looking cars (for a change), Jobless rates are at a an all time low, IT job hirings are up, Delta is almost out of business, PC_Tool missed a Tab preference, and Gas Prices are over 3 bucks. Isn't America just grand?

Over $3? Chalk another point up for Lakeville, MN. We're still at $2.70.

And hey, the Tab thing...like I said, it's been a rough week. :P
